[TRIGGER WARNING] Alex Standall being depressed and suicidal for... ever since he first appeared...

I just wanna put it out there that there are reasons why Alex behaved the way he did. It's ironic how no one on the show even noticed his mental issue until he did what he did. I hesitated to put this up so many times. I kept uploading it and then canceling it since it might appear triggering and upsetting for many people... But I really want people to look at Alex's mental situation and try to understand him a little more... I related to him and his struggles so much while watching the show is all...

I think it's so crazy how we see hannahs story and we go like 'she was so suicidal, people should have noticed' while watching the same thing happen to Alex at the same time and not noticing

I always found Alex's story line to be the most realistic and honest as far as how someone reaches the point of attempting suicide, and how other's can miss it so easily, when it seems so obvious in retrospect. Hannah's story has gotten a lot of criticism for neglecting to show the mental health problems that typically are associated with someone who tries to kill themselves, for 'glorifying' her method of death, and for making it seem like her suicide was a way of getting back at the people who hurt her, making people think suicide would be a good way to make others suffer forever for the way they had treated them. Alex's story reads much more 'real.' His depression may not have been overtly specified, but it was pretty easy to pick up on, through his words and actions. And yet, no one caught on, probably because while he talked about death and dying and even killing himself an alarming amount of the time, it was mostly phrased as a joke, or sarcasm. It's not unusual for someone contemplating suicide to talk about it, but it's rare for them to ask for help or flat out say they're considering taking their own life. It's much more likely that they speak in subtleties, and hope someone catches on. It's unfortunate it took until season four before the show ever showed the impact a professional could have in helping someone in crisis, and even then, focusing solely on Clay. Alex's story could have added so much if more time had been taken to show how far the repercussions of the attempt actually affected his entire life.

How they all kinda ignored his depression/ suicidal moments kinda reminds me of how schools handle these things. Unless they specifically say “I want to kill myself” or unless they try to commit, they don’t care. And even then they barely do shit

Always loved Alex since the first time he appeard in Season 1. It's hard to watch this character fall apart while everyone else is trying to get justice for Hannah or help Justin recover in the first three seasons. Then they make him the killer of Bryce and again it feels like nobody cares how Alex is feeling about that. They don't think about the fact, that Alex might fall apart all over again because of this. And then there's the fact that he looses yet again another friend when Justin died. Hell, I don't even want to think about how Alex must have felt after season 4 ended. I mean he got Charlie who will hopefully always be there for him in the future but the damage's already done. He will have to live the rest of his life with the fact that he is the one responsible for Bryce's death. And I still can't get over the fact that only Winston and Alex act like it's something that matters in seasons 4. With everyone else I feel like they just left Alex alone with his guilt and even his dad is acting like it's something that Alex just has to get over and forget. I'm glad that Alex Standall is "just" a fictional character because if he was a real person, I would hope that he has good friends who know how important it is to talk, seek professional help and not tell the person to just get over it..

I honestly think Alex was the only character, excluding Clay, who took accountability for contributing to Hannah’s suicide. The rest were all in denial and acted as if they didn’t play a role in the downfall leading to her death. Alex was the ONLY honest one and I respect that for him. Many considered him an asshole which I get to where they’re coming from, but he wasn’t ever really rude or harmful to anyone. I guess his honesty came off as asshole-ish. Did anyone else notice that he had a bit of anger problems? He would lash out a lot of times. I never could quite put together why he lashed out.
