So I allow myself a little vanity once in a while as long as it's controlled and I don't kid myself that I'm gonna use it. Like recently I bought a collector's edition of a gamecube console without the intention of ever using it, only because it's Resident Evil themed. Also now I spend more time adding things to the list and waiting for the price to drop or item to go out of stock - if that happens it means I didn't need it all that much and then it's best to remove it from the list in case it comes back 😂 The point is don't beat yourself up about those VHS. I can certainly relate; when I was in a very dark place last year I was ordering to ensure one (or more) titles arrived _EVERY_ day; the effort any planning that went into making sure I didn't 'miss' a day (usually that happened if a title turned up earlier than expected so I'd had 2 the day before!) was incredible. To be fair to myself I tried my best to make sure they were the best possible prices and I did actually want to watch the movie/TV series, rather than buying for the sake of it but finally, I realised the trap I was in... and I was running out of titles to buy that I wanted (!), I've managed to cut down a lot over the last few months especially... though I had a bit of a slip this month with multiple pre-orders ending up arriving close together and discovering a couple of movies/TV series I didn't even know about but now I feel I need instantly! Still; recognition is the first step to getting back to addressing the situation *before* it affects any finances. Oh, forgot to mention, I don't have kids but on at least a couple of occasions when I couldn't find anything I wanted to 'fill in a day' I'd get a movie I thought my _wife_ would want to watch, just so I'd get a parcel through the letterbox.

If the tapes are noticeably bad quality, I've been tossing them and the cover papers in the bin and recycling the plastic cases. Yesterday I was at my local thrift store which has been declining VHS tape donations for years, but now suddenly there actually were some and prices were 5€ on average - more than dvds which cost 1€. So there might be a rising interest for them again. Which would mean that people will start hoarding and hauling them for a theoretic value and to make youtube videos. And to my amazement, this already seems to be a thing (just searched for some VHS haul while making this post) where people fill shopping carts with thrift store tapes. The same thing of course applies to retro gaming too. "get ps3 games while you can" types of videos. I don't buy new, so 2 for £30 for anything sounds insane to me. I'm a charity shop / boot fair digger, and with that same amount of money you've spent one two discs, I'll come home with halfa dozen records, and a couple of bags of DVDs / blu-rays. But I do have the same essential problem, of stuff stacking up quicker than I can appreciate it or watch it. So I rely on two things: Curation, some I keep if they turn out to be genuinely rare, or are on my list of wants, but others I just always meant to get around to watching, and once I have, back they go to the charity shop, and so get a dope rush from the altruism aspect of it: The charity shop makes money, and whoever bought them gets a rush of their own by possibly finding something they have been trying to find... a lovely thought. The second, is dividing my year into seasons: Buying / gathering / collecting (hoarding), then, in the winter months, I make a point not to buy anything new, but watch through the stack accumulated, and each week, pop some spare change in a "swear jar" type of thing, whereby, if I do a job around the house or something, I'll pop a quid in, so I feel like I've earned it (the feeling of having had to save for something, the way I did as a kid, makes me appreciate what I buy even more) - come buying season, I have amassed a little dough through this, and ration it out. One thing I do Is the ten pound challenge: Where I spend a day in the local high street charity shops (5 dvds for a quid in Cancer Research for instance) and see how much rare stuff and things on my list I can find for this budget: You'd be surprised how often you come across a little gem or two! (Hard Eight and Brainstorm dvds last week! :) So the upshot is, maybe you can discipline yourself by these means, or if you can't ditch one habit - relace it with a better one.
