Let me once again do what would be the job of drumtec’s customer support 😜: In Superior Drummer 3, you can activate “lower choke threshold” and “single choke mode” under “MIDI In/E-Drums -> Edit”. This will make Superior Drummer 3 interpret the Efnote 3X’s weak aftertouch signals (which only have a MIDI velocity of 48) as if they had a velocity of 127. (They’re still recorded at velocity 48, though.) Since EZDrummer 3 came out after Superior Drummer 3, I would assume it has these same options; Superior Drummer 2 and EZDrummer 2, unfortunately, do not. Even with that, choking is only possible if you only put sounds of the same cymbal family on a given pad. Say, ride bell, ride bow, ride edge - you can choke all three. If however you put a crash sound on the edge of your ride cymbal, you can choke the ride bell and bow sounds, but not the crash sound 🤦. I have no clue why, since the “lower choke threshold” should boost *all* the aftertouch signals. I don’t think the aftertouch signal only applies to specific MIDI notes, since when you play e.g. a ride bow sound and then choke the edge, a different MIDI note is sent in for the ride edge, but the choking still works. So I don’t see what’s different when putting a crash sound on the ride edge, because that can’t be choked. The crash cymbals can be choked, in turn, but if I put a splash or china on the edges of the crash pads, again only the crash sound can be choked, not the splash/china.

I think the Problem is, that EZD does think in midi notes and obviously doesn’t know from what Pad the individual midi note come from. If you use Bow, Edge and Bell from the same Ride and you use the choke assigned to your Ride you can mute all. But if you put an Crash Sound on the Edge, EZD Maps the Midi Note to a virtual Crash. If you Choke the Ride, only the Ride Sounds are chocked. If you wanna choke the Edge of your Ride, wich is mapped to a virtual Crash, you need to choke that virtual crash, wich you can‘t of course, since you have no physical pad to your Virtual Crash (that is triggered by your Ride Edge).

Mitch the pearl mimic also costs more than most gaming laptops. If toontrack made one and either made it $1500 but you had to pay for expansions like they do with ez3. Or if they make it $2500 I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

I have the same question. I cant decide between the EFNOTE 3 and the 17KVX. It seems the EFNOTE has better triggers on all drums (cone triggers / 9 on the snare alone, 6 on the toms) and more zones. No Maps for BFD3. Just preset maps for Toontrack stuff.

I see you’re using a tennis ball beater on the bass drum. I keep having double-trigger issues when playing with the right foot on my Tama Speed Cobra, using the stock beater. Would changing the beater help here? The issue only arises for me when playing the Efnote 3X with Superior Drummer (using layered one-shot samples on the bassdrum for added attack and consistency), not when playing with the built-in sounds of the Efnote 3X module.

The reason is that the Efnote 3X’s MIDI aftertouch signals are too weak (velocity 48 instead of 127). You need to turn on “lower choke threshold” and “single choke mode” in Superior Drummer 3 / EZDrummer 3 under “MIDI In/E-Drums -> Edit”; this makes the software interpret these weak aftertouch signals as if they had a velocity of 127. Even that only allows a partial choking of the cymbals; if, like many players, you tend to put different cymbal sounds on the edges of the pads (like splash / china) than on the bows (crash / ride), you can only choke the bow sounds, not the edge sounds.

Thank you very much! If you're mainly using external sample libraries at the studio / at home, I'd go for a TD-27 module, which has positional sensing & can use the Roland digital pads. VH-14D & CY-18D especially are outstanding in my opinion. EFNOTE also plays very nice, yet the most articulations/realism will be put out from a TD-27/TD-50X still. Kind regards!

Roland, because Efnote for some reason decided to make the aftertouch signals for its cymbals too weak (velocity 48 instead of 127). This makes cymbal choking only partially possible, and only if you jump through a lot of unnecessary hoops. It’s not enough to make me return my Efnote 3X, since it plays nicely, and the second rim on the snare to distinguish sidestick from rimshot is a genius idea that Roland hasn’t implemented to this day. But that’s only thanks to the “lower choke threshold” option in Superior Drummer 3. Without that, cymbal choking wouldn’t be possible at all. And that definitely would be a reason to send the kit back. @drumtecTV As you can tell, a bunch of people here in the comments are having the same problem, and they only find out about it after they’ve already bought the Efnote 3X - without anyone even bothering to explain to them *why* the chokes don’t work. Some people will undoubtedly revoke their purchases over major issues like this. Toontrack and the German distributor for Efnote aren’t being helpful either in this regard. I think the easiest fix would be for Efnote to develop a firmware update that boosts all aftertouch signals to 127. But even if that’s possible, they will only start working on such a fix if the repeated criticism somehow reaches them.

Unfortunately, I got no reply to my mail to drumtec either. 🙄 Customer support seems to be nonexistent. I can help you out at least a little: Superior Drummer 3 (and I assume EZdrummer 3, too) has the “lower choke threshold” function and “single choke”, to be found under “MIDI In/E-Drums -> Edit” (both “lower choke threshold” and “single choke mode” must be turned on with the Efnote 3X, because it sends its aftertouch signals at too low a velocity - 48 instead of 127, like a Roland drumset would). “Lower choke threshold” boosts Superior Drummer 3’s perception of these aftertouch signals to 127 (it does not actually increase the recorded velocity of the aftertouch signal - as I can tell in Logic Pro X, the recorded midi velocity is still stuck at 48; with “lower choke threshold”, Superior Drummer 3 merely “interprets” this data as if it had a velocity of 127). Since Superior Drummer 2 does not have this “lower choke threshold” yet, that means no cymbal chokes are possible with the Efnote 3X on Superior Drummer 2 (in contrast, that’s no problem with even old Roland drumsets), which is extremely disappointing for a drumset of this price. Even with “lower choke threshold” turned on in Superior Drummer 3, cymbals can only be choked if the bow and edge sound belongs to the same type of cymbal (i.e., both crash or both ride). If however you put a crash on the edge of your ride cymbal, you can only choke the ride sound, but not the crash edge sound. And if you put a splash or china on the edge of your crash cymbal, you can choke the crash, but not the splash/china.

Hey Amit, generally speaking triggering any sample library with a well playing e-kit is possible, but midi mapping support is much more flexible/advanced with the Toontrack libraries. Toontrack has made great job with EZD3. My personal experience is that latency in EZD3 is minor vs SD3 with my 4 years old setup (Win 11- I5-16GB-SSD disk on RME FF800). I can play 128 buffersize EZD3 where SD3 needs to raise at 96 or 64 buffersize to equal performance. EZD3 its made to play edrums. Sd3 is best but tuff to play on edrums! (my edrum is old td15kv Roland)

It depends on what software you are planning to use. Generally speaking, Roland modules offer state-of-the-art playability/triggering. TD-27/TD-50X offer digital pad connectivity (those are great) and also feature positional sensing. But only Superior Drummer 3 will support positional sensing, EZD3 won't. So generally speaking Roland all the way, you can get great results with a TD-17 & a great kit already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHKsmnyng7x7isU But if you are looking for most realism possible, I'd look at TD-27 probably. By now, Superior Drummer 3 does have presets for the Efnote 3, 5, and 7. These helped me calibrate the hihat properly; however, they do not help with getting the cymbal chokes right. Even with “lower choke threshold” and “single choke mode” activated in Superior Drummer 3, cymbals can only be choked when you have the same cymbal family on edge and bow (say, ride bow and ride edge). If you like putting different cymbal sounds on the edges (e.g. splash/china, or an extra crash on the ride), because you don’t have that many cymbal pads, you can only choke the respective bow sounds (crash/ride), but not the edge sounds (splash/china/extra crash on the ride).

No plugins active honestly, just a little comp/limiter at the end to bring up levels. No additional mixing/editing, I don't see how the same kit might sound drastically different on your side. Hey Matt, that's hard to tell because for the demo I didn't go into (midi) detail that much as when I record drum takes for a track at the studio. But it felt good & I didn't notice any problems actually, so I'd say it works well & if there's music around it, you'll notice even less if there's any little midi "problems". And you can always clean up the midi file manually if neccessary :) KInd regards!

Based on my look at the module, it only has a USB-C output - no MIDI out. Did this ever cause any problems for you in connecting the drums to the Macbook (since I see you’re running Logic Pro in the background)? My iMac, for example, doesn’t recognise my MIDI keyboard controller, which is why I always link it to the computer via a MIDI cable. (For my current Roland TD-9, I had no other choice but to go with the MIDI output, since it only has a USB input, but no USB output). The Efnote 3x is currently my top candidate, but my two main concerns are a) the apparent lack of a MIDI out and b) the durability issues I’ve heard some people report about (after all, the 3X says Made in China, the Efnote 5 is Made in Japan).

Hey Brandon, I am not sure if Modo drum actually offers e-drum midi mapping support. I remember that when it was still rather new, there was no such features available as far as I remember. Kind regards!

I don't understand why would someone buy a good/expensive module (like TD50) if the goal is to use a VST. I'm probably missing something. Will the ezdrummer output differ a lot between, let's say, a TD11 and a TD50 ?

This is a different kit. This kit and module costs $2700 altogether. The TD50 module alone costs basically this whole kit. For the price of an entire roland setup you can purchase this kit, a nice laptop, and EZdrummer 3 and get better sounds/expandability. Not to mention the fact that you then have a laptop for whatever you want. Not to mention this kit has some excellent pads/triggers for the price. Arguably the best hihat at this price range as well. So you could spend $5.2k to 8k on just a drum set, or spend about $3500 on this kit plus a laptop/software.

The other part of this is that imported samples are 'one-shot' on the TD50 which gives you the dreaded 'machine-gun' effect which most are trying to avoid.

A modules internal latency and triggering will greatly impact the experience with VST’s.

Your first sentence hit the nail on the head. Expensive modules have good sounds at best, if you want "great" sounds/flexibility you really need to invest in a VST library. Latency shouldn't be an issue with reputable module manufacturers and a decent computer setup. Opinion of course.

So basically EZ drummer is alot of different acoustic kits DW,Pearl,Yamaha etc. And same with cymbals Sabian,Paiste and what not ,and you use it to make your electric drum set sound like any of them would be rite ??

Yes, but with the flexibility of midi based production work, being able to switch out any of the instruments with a single mouse click at any point of the production procedure. Also I guess you wouldn't be able to book Hansa Studio with all of its high end vintage recording equipment for the price of an EZdrummer 3 for too long :-D And lastly, you are able to play physically noiseless with the right e-drum kit, so you can set up jam & recording sessions in your living room if you want to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGnMlJyFbKqBmaM I still record acoustic drums at my studio a lot, but for several situations the elctronic drum setup is just so much more convenient, flexible & faster to get great results with. I have an Efnote 7 and bought EZD3. Honestly, for me this is totally garbage. Not only i lose my Bell zones for the Crashes, i only can deside between a rimshot, or a Rim only sound. But Not Both. The Choke is working badly since i Need to press super Hard. The Hihat Footsplash is Not working well, when i open hh normally, it will Splash slightly, when i wanna Splash, it will Not Splash or Splash slightly. Can‘t get this fixed. I lose the versatility to map a Crash Sound on Ride Edge and still be able to Choke it. Overall Not recommended for efnote and in Addition too less options for individual Mapping and changes. For a Roland td27 I know it works Fine. Still the Level of custumizing is pretty lose… 170€ for nothing -.-

Great performance, but the results in terms of sound are very disappointing (( Spatial placement of flour toms, ride and hihat seems to belong to different kits. Also the hihat dynamic/velocity doesn't sound natural. Together with the panoraming the kit "from the drummer's perspective" it just overloads my brain 🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe this can work somehow in some busy mix, but sounds very artificially solo. But to be honest, no one VST managed till now to provide natural sounding kit out of the box, so EZD is not exceptional here in any way.
