My range is 30 minutes drive from my house so I did an initial setup on each of my rifles using a laserlite in the barrel and did the zero for all of my rifles ( 10 of those including the .22lr 's , AR9, and 30 carbine and the AK and the M4.) at 10 yards at dusk at the house in the back yard. This got me on paper at 10 yards in all calibers, and I adjusted then using ammunition and finally at 50 yards. This additional step with the laser lite before I went to the range probably saved me a lot of frustration and ammunition.

To preemptively adjust to achieve this result, at home, before range time, try this. It has worked numerous times for me. Without obstructing the barrel bore, carefully level & support the upper aiming at a wall 10 yds away. Print a 3.8" diameter circle with dissecting crosshairs (vert. & hor. lines) that extend to edges of paper. Precisely level paper on wall using crosshairs and affix so circle is dead center inside barrel bore, carefully compensating for parallax. When all is set, adjust point of aim where vertical line dissects top edge of circle. If you are painstaking with this, you should be very close at the range. Also works great for adjusting lasers and verifying accuracy of cartridge type laser boresights.

Know this: any rifle fired at an angle greater than horizontal will produce a trajectory where the line of sight and bullet path intersect twice and thus from a ballistics app a shooter can appraise any notion for what sight-in distance produces the most desirable zero distance. Remember too that the zero distance is a placeholder. To hit to a desired point on a mark at less or greater distance than zero distance learn how to range distance to target and adjust the sight or hold to needed amount from the zero distance as ballistics app identifies. For me, shooting in US Service Rifle Competition I need to know sight come ups for 200, 300, 500, 600, and 1000 yards from an initial sight zeroed for 100 yards. One more thing, if you have the mil spec detachable carry handle sight or MaTech sight on your AR15A4 or M4 you must sight-in to 25 meters if you want a bullet drop compensation function from the sight. Also, do not adjust elevation wheel for a so called improved zero to permit exacting hits at 100 yards since that adjustment will prevent the sight from having a bullet drop compensation function. Instead hold about 3 inches low on 100 yard targets.

The main issue with this method is optic height. The guy who made those targets was using an optic with a 2.5 inch optic height. That's the measurement from the center of your bore to the center of your optic and varies greatly from optic to optic so you need to either measure it or check the specs. This measurement is critical for this method of zeroing to work. For instance my optic has a height of 2.875 inches. So if you plug that number into the same equation that was used to come up with that target your POI actually needs to be 2.24 inches low (not 1.9)from POA to equal a 50 yard zero. So if I use that target I would actually be .34 inches off at 10 yards, 1.7 inches off at 50 yards, 6.8 inches off at 200 yards and more than 10 inches off at 300. Those targets are good for getting you close but you have to take into consideration the specs of your rifle if you want it dead on balls accurate. Of course you could just shoot at 50 yards and spare yourself all the math and probable imprecision due to tolerance stack.

Cool vid, glad I found it! I see a few people asking if this technique can be used for different barrel lengths and/or different weapon systems. What people need to realize is that when you use ballistics software or tables, you have to know your muzzle velocity and bullet weight to plug in for the trajectory plot. The shooter in the vid is using the AR15 system, 5.56mm, not sure about the barrel length and bullet weights, etc. You can't use this technique for other weapons systems and get the same result, i.e. 7.62x39mm or others... For that matter, you can't expect necessarily the same trajectory plot on a super short AR15 barrel, although at short ranges you might not experience much variance in bullet strikes. To be scientific about it as they did in this video, you need your bullet weight and muzzle velocity (taken with a chronograph on site) to be able to plot potential trajectories to find what your rifle's 'sweet spot' zero will be like in this video. As a simple example, 5.56mm Nato ammo with a weight of 77 gr travelling at 2750 fps is DEFINITELY going to have a different trajectory than a 7.62x39mm cartridge at 124 gr, travelling at 2350 fps... A heavier, slower rock is going to drop MUCH quicker at distance than the lighter, faster rock.

It's called :maximum point blank range", which of course varies with the intended target size. Every hunter does this so that sight changes or 'hold over' is not needed. With a 10" target (average size of a deer's 'boiler room') with, say, a .308 and most popular hunting cartridges, it comes out at about 250 yards. Of course allowance has to be made for the distance that line of sight is above the bore to work out when the projectile first rises above line of sight. Most rifles with decent ballistics can be zeroed this way so a 'centre' hold will always result in an effective hit. This guy is on to it... Once it's done you can just point and shoot....

To everyone who wants to do a 7 yard zero like lets say zero in your house with bore laser ect. first before you go to range. You could do this same principle at 2.1 inch @ 7 yards, which in turn is 1.9 inch @ 10 yards. G1 Ballistic Coefficient = 0.246, Muzzle Velocity = 3165, Bullet Weight = 55 grain, Sight height 2.5 inches. Zero @ 50 yards. To those that are horrible at math and don't know how to get tenths/ decimals take the decimal and multiply by 16. example 2.1" take decimal .1 x 16= 1.6 now round that to 2. So that's 2 16ths which is on your measuring tape or simplified to 1/8th. So, then put that in place of the decimal with original number 2.1 = 2 and 2/16 or 2 and 1/8th this is very close to tenths. On the 10 yard zero he uses 1.9 take .9 and x's by 16 = 14.4 round that to 14 and the answer will be 1 and 14/16 or 1 and 7/8th. If you want it to be 100 percent accurate and not 99 percent print this decimal ruler and be sure to turn shrink to print off. printable-ruler.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/ruler-12in-inches-decimal-Letter-transparent.pdf I hope I helped someone in the mean time happy shooting.

if anyone wants to check if the 1.9 inches is correct for your gun and sight. download the app strelok and punch in all the information and itll tell you the exact measurements so you know if this printout works for you or if you need to change and adjust it a bit. for the sight over bore just take a ruler and measure from the middle of your sight to the middle of your barrel and use that number in the app info. or if you have an a2 front post iron sight and you are using a absolute cowitness mount then just measure from the middle of the barrel to the top of the middle post on the sight and thatll give you the correct inches to plug in but if you have that then you most likely will be able to use the paper print out for 1.9 inches but the exact is like 1.93

How about doing a proper 25M "zero", with confirmation and actual zero at 300M, if possible? If you're using standard BUIS or old school carry handle irons. Then just turn the knob to "200M". Then, you know, the elevation knob will actually work. If it's a red dot, a 50/~225M zero is just fine. Yards only makes sense if you're on a mildot scope. Which the Eotech is not.

@williamgaines9784
@williamgaines9784 3 жыл бұрын
Wrong. You have boresighted only. That means the sights and the bore align at that point. The path of the projectile is not a straight line. So any range before or after that point the bullet will be higher or lower, AND if the angle of the bore was level with the dot on the target EVERY shot will be lower. The projectile falls from the moment it leaves the end of the barrel. The sight offset is important because that is what determines the angle of the bore in relation to the line of sight. As only briefly touched on in the video, his red dot had a 2.5 inch offset, which is similar to standard iron sights on an AR-15 type rifle. If one uses multiple sighting systems (scope, canted buis or red dot, or an optic on top of an optic) the offset of the particular sighting system must be known to properly get battle/maximum point blank zeros for each sight. The ballistics of the ammunition must also be known for this. If the offsets or the ammunition ballistics are different each sight with have a different zero and a different maximum point blank range. The military uses uniform ammunition and uniform sighting systems which makes such "one and done" settings possible and easy. The calculators can only give proper calculations if they get proper inputs. Know your offset, know your ammunitions' velocities, projectile weights, and ballistic coefficients, plus the size of your intended target, and you can get good point blank zeros for every weapon/sight&load combination you use.

the best method is first identify the size of the kill zone, then the max distance you want to hit the kill zone, the pick the flattest trajectory that hits the most kill zone targets out to your chosen distance, i myself perfer a no hold over trajectory for the simple reason that front sight can block view of where you need to hold, especially at long ranges but what really matters is what ever zero you choose its if you hit your kill zone wether you hold under or over knowing where to hold to hit your kill zone, shooting air rifles also for most of my life having a dozen different velocities, over 100 different pellets with different ogives and profiles and over 25 different grain weights, we air gunners know trajectory well because we have to, we have much more drop, lots of wind drift, we make more ballistic calculations for targets of many sizes, and other variables to deal with far more then center fire rifles wich gives us vast experience because we shoot alot being the cost is cheaper to do more tests, at the end of the day its all about hitting your kill zone out to your prefered distance despite your zero, if kill zone target gets hit every time with using more then one sight in then it doesnt matter, its all about making hits on kill zone never missing any out to your disired distance you choose, combat, plinking, competition and even extreme long range are all different from each other. in a imperfect world you can have flat shooting with out hold over nor long range shooting with out hold under, some where in a trajectory path you will have hold under and hold over depending on distance

You'd need to be even lower at 10yards for a 50/200 zero. By about another .5".

No, the tightest set of groups is the 100 yard zero. The 50 has quite the spread.

Please correct me if I'm wrong if I understand you. If I sight in my scope at 10 yards for a Target at 25 yards away my scope sight should be set on the center bullseye. And the gun should be adjusted to shooting 11/16 from the bullseye down correct?

So basically at 10 yd dead on with your rifle and you hold point of impact down 1.9 in then at 50 yards you should be zeroed out that's what I'm collecting here. Please someone correct me if I'm not right and thanks.

Also would you adjust down 1.9 at your 10 yd 0 to be dead on at 50 I guess that's better way to put it.??

After using the 10 yd zero I found my rounds 12 mils low. Azimuth 4 mils off. Had to tweak the 50 yd/mtr zero. Six rounds corrected azimuth and elevation. i will use this 10 yard technique again.

I use the military zero which is what i like to call the right way..its amazing how complicated people try to make shit keep it simple stupid 25/300 meter zero is point of aim 300 meter 3.5 high at 100, 8 inches high at 200, dead on at 300 no better zero than that if your cometition zero at 50 if not do it the right way. If your shooting an 8 inch target at 200 hold half width below simple. If your in combat aim center mass out to 400 its a kill.

Can you please tell me if this method works with a 22 LR rifle and 357 magnum rifle? I am new to shooting and having a difficult time getting a solid zero. Enjoyed your video very much. Thank you in advance for your response.
@justsmy5677
@justsmy5677 5 жыл бұрын
Matt Bradford this method works for different calibers, but you have to use/apply the ballistics for .22LR or 357. Keep in mind that .22LR will start to drop a lot quicker than 5.56 so what Frank said about 200+ yards will not apply (hitting the target without "holding over" the target). But this concept applies as long as you understand your rounds ballistics and apply common sense about where you want to zero your rifle based on caliber and your shooting objective, There are several good ballistics apps out there.
