I should have written the restrictions as [0,2pi). I do multiple examples of solving equations with trigonometric functions in them at 1:06 4:30 9:11 12:42 15:49 This videos only includes trig functions with single angles such as sinx as opposed to sin(4x).

A reference angle is an acute angle and it is the number of degrees between the terminal side and the x axis. The angles of 40, 220, and, 320 all have a reference angle of 40 degrees as an example.

Nice clear explanations! I recommend your videos for my students. Love your positive attitude, hand circle, bam!...One suggestions: when you show angles with hands, for students would be better to draw a unit circle and mark them. Showing Pi/6 or 7pi/6 or 11pi/6 by hand is not enough for some students. From my humble experience experience, students have to see written, drawn on a board and show angles. It stays better in their memory and helps reinforce unit circle ideas. For simple equations, I also graph in Desmos calculator the right side of the equation and the left side and students see intersections of two graphs, that are solutions and they see more solutions by doing periods. Just a suggestions to make your great lectures even more colorful and exciting! Thank you for inspiring to make my own videos.

...by the time I started swinging my arm around in this video we had already been working on the unit circle for a long time and have included it in prior videos:)...much like you I'm sure, I also do a lot of unit circle quizzes! I will definitely try your Desmos suggestion in the future. Thanks for supporting a fellow teacher and we greatly appreciate your support of this channel! Just a reminder in case you didn't realize...the growth of these free educational channels depends on students taking the time to like, subscribe, support the ads that run and share these channels thru social medias, with other classmates and teachers as well. (example...it took us 5 years to get our silver play award for 100,000 subscribers:( ...and that was with A LOT of hard work and support from my wife answering all the comments and keeping me motivated:) Good luck with your own videos...keep inspiring in every way you can...BAM!!!

I am falling asleep and will look at this thoroughly tomorrow, but you want to start by using one of your Pythagorean identities to replace sec^2 with 1+tan^2 to get your equation written in terms of one trig function (one variable...distribute the 3 and probably finish by factoring a quadratic set equal to zero. You will need to use the quadratic formula if it does not factor. Hope this helps for now:)

I'm confused. I just watched your inverse trig functions video and you explained how inverse functions are restricted. i.e sin^-1 is restricted from -pi/2 to pi/2. But here in the first example one of the answers was pi, which is outside that restriction. What's the deal?
@chordsequencer001
@chordsequencer001 6 жыл бұрын
Right, right for sin(theta) = 0, 0 is a particular solution, k(pi) is what is known as a "general solution" for sin(theta) = 0, where k is in Z. When tackling theta by itself, we can only obtain the "particular solution". But in general, its arcsin(0) + k(pi) where k is in Z.

I have a question PLEEEEASE RESPOND I HAVE FINALS NEXT THURSDAY! So at minutes 16:20 when he uses the Double Angle identity 2cos^2x-1 in replacement of cos2x..... how do I know to use THIS specific identity? FOR EXAMPLE: in my textbook cos2x there are three different identities for it: cos2x = cos^2x-sin^2x = 2cos^2x - 1 = 1 - 2sin^2 How would I have known its supposed to be the second one?
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 7 жыл бұрын
Knowing you are going to solve an equation, it is best to keep everything in terms of one variable... or trig function. That is why I used the second identity. I hope you did great on your exam. Sorry for the late reply.

As a teacher I frequently recommend your videos to my students as a was to reinforce the ideas we have discussed in AP Calculus. However I must raise a point of concern in this video. The inverse sine of a trig function gives only one answer - for you to write arcsin(-1/2) having two solutions is surely incorrect - try using your calculator! It would be better perhaps to explain that there are two possible answers to the equation in the given domain and maybe avoid using arcsine. I suppose this is similar to x^2 = 4 and x = sqrt(4) being different equations. I love your videos and hope you don't mind my input :)
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 7 жыл бұрын
It would have been good for me to remind the viewers, the students, that I am solving the question for the domain of [0,2pi) as indicated on the chalk board which is why there are two solutions. You are of course correct that if we are using arcsine as a function there is only one answer of -pi/6 which is neither 7pi/6 or 11pi/6. An old book I used to teach out of would use lower and upper case letters on the inverses to differentiate between inverse relations and functions. I can certainly stop using this notation in class:) Unfortunately I can no longer add annotation corrections thanks to KZbin's changes. I hope I did not confuse any of your students! Thanks for using my videos as a reference for your students.

Well obviously it is one of the double angle identities...but...to prove it is true. Write sin2x as sin(x+x) and use the sum identity for sin and you get sinxcosx+sinxcosx which is equal to 2sinxcosx:) Now this is assuming you accept that sin(a+b)=sin(a)cos(b)+sin(b)cos(a) which requires another proof!

In the first example, why can't you just factor the left side to 2(sinx)(sinx - 1) and then divide both sides by 2? Then you get sinx = 0 and sinx = 1
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 9 жыл бұрын
+Scroll Siddur Both of the terms on the left hand side do not have a common factor of 2. That is why you cannot factor out a 2 from both terms.

doesn't sine^-1 (0) also equal 2pi?
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 8 жыл бұрын
sine^-1 (0) has an infinite number of solutions but only 2 of them are within the restricted range 0 and pi. The answer to your question is yes, but 2pi is not within the restrictions to allow inverse sine to act as a function.

Most complicated factoring I have ever seen at 7:30. I simply use the simple FOIL method 2sin^2(x) - sin(x) -1 to:(2sin(x) + 1) (sin(x) -1). Learning the Foiling methods can save multiple steps from the grouping process.

+TheAnimeRegimen +TheAnimeRegimen As you leading coefficient and constant gain factors and are no longer prime numbers the FOIL method...aka trial and error...is going to become very frustrating and time consuming. That is why I am showing a process to factor these quadratic trinomials. This was just a simple example.

+ProfRobBob Ah, gotcha. Haven't had to deal with any problems of that magintude yet. Guess I will have to learn this method sooner or later.

+TheAnimeRegimen You don't have to learn this method. When I was in high school we were only taught the FOIL method, or what I call trial and error. I saw this method for the first time when I was tutoring someone in Algebra in their book and was pissed I was never taught this technique of factoring. That trial and error can be really frustrating at times! Thanks for watching too:)

@profrobbob
@profrobbob 10 жыл бұрын
2sinx is not the same as sin2x...or sin(2x) which can be rewritten into 2sinxcosx. I used a Double Angle Identity.
