Trimble Access Station Setup

How to complete a Total Station station set up in Trimble Access v2020

I’m having a bit of trouble. When I’m completing my station setup at the back sight, the Horizontal distance is saying -3 and throwing my setup off completely

How does the total station even know where direct NORTH is to compute that backsight azimuth of 331 deg etc???? How did you determine direct NORTH to set the total station plate at 0 deg?

Setting uo on previously shot gps is usually how I do it. Or rotate the job in
