Trimming Foundered Mare Left Front Foot - RJF

As we make our way around this mare, we notice continued signs of Founder (laminitis) and continue to shape the feet for the next time she is trimmed, and this care and correct feed will correct her feet. This front foot shows what is called "Seedy toe" as pointed out in the video with small holes throughout the white line.

We have a mini horse that is always finding away to get out and he has been foundered for years …. He is a pet only and our farrier says that he doesn’t have shoes small enough for him so he’s always been shoeless. We love him and want him comfortable and feed him supplements for his feet. Do you think he would be more comfortable with shoes on? And do you think supplements are any help?

Kay, founder is caused by a feed excess. If you have control on how much he eats, the swelling in the hoof should not be going on. Once they founder, their hooves grow faster and need regular trimming. ,most folks have a tendency to over feed, which makes the problem worse. Without seeing the horse and the condition of his feet or knowing how he is walking, I’m shooting in the dark. I probably wouldn’t put shoes on either. You might could glue leather or pad material on if he was real sore. Getting a handle on his feed is the most important part.even if you have to calculate pounds of feed for the size. A vet could help there. I’ve seen horses with the coffin bone ruptured through the sole, get completely sound. It takes persistence and work. I don’t know what supplements your using, but that can be over done, sometimes less is better. Check with your vet, hope this helps.

Hi, my mare had Laminits back in Oct last year, l've had same Farrier doing her every 6 weeks for the whole time l have had her, which is 3 years. She pulled up really sore after her first Trim after having Laminits, was fine after 3 or 4 day's, she's had another Trim since that one & pulled up really sore again, l've told my Farrier about this,. He isn't trimming her any different to any other time in the past, but it definitely must have something to do with her having the Laminits, l never had her hoofs x rayed, do you think l need too. My Farrier is due back on the 26th of this month, l'm going to say to him, don't take much off, maybe just run rasp around this time & next trim, do a normal trim.. l don't want her sore again, especially when right now, she is absolutely fine.

Bella Jayne, an X-ray would let you know if she has coffin bone rotation. That makes the tip of the bone put pressure on the sole. It also gives you the angle and degree the hoof needs trimmed to. You’ll have to be careful how much feed she is getting to keep from foundering again and to keep the weight off. She should be squared off or rocker toed to help break over. Sometimes they get a bit sore right after a trim. Without an X-ray your farrier is shooting in the dark. Every case is different. Hope this helps.

Thank you for replying, & yes there's been alot of changes since she had the Laminits, l have a yard to lock her up in now if l have too & a new fence so she can not get into the other paddock, she has low sugar hay, HyGain Zero, HyGain Balanced, l have a muzzle but don't need it atm, her paddock is nearly just dirt, she is a Quarter Horse xCob so she holds her weight really well, her neck is firm with abit of a wobble now, alot better than how it was. Thanks again. 🙂

JT H, ya I think she would do fine with a squared shoe to cover the coffin bone. She’s pretty sound barefoot. The lady has bad knees and can’t ride anymore. Thanks for the question.
