Trimming Foundered Mare (Right Front) - RJF

This is not a severe case of founder, and this mare is almost recovered, with only a few small signs of founder on this right front foot. This was only a light trim, but the small corrections to the hoof will gradually allow her to heal completely.

Im not well versed in the lingo, what do you mean by "hot grass" and "hot feed"? Thanks for the vids.

Fresh green grass. The sugar content is hard for some to digest. They eat to much. It upsets their system causing inflammation in their hooves between the bone and the hoof wall, very painful. Like hitting your finger and having pressure under the nail.

Hot grass is like sugar to a diabetic. It is very acidic and distroys cell walls that are part of the glue of the hoof wall to coffin bone structure called stretched laminie, or in extreme cases called founder which is coffin bone rotation petuding down the soul wall. It's also called the love disease because of surar treats. Too much suagar is acidic and causes cell distruction.

No because he knows where he can trim safely. When they are shod, the farrier knows where to pound the nails.

I’m not a ferrier but I’m trying to help a pony with founder. Her hooves get very long. I have just been filing them every few weeks to try and get them the right size. The people that own the pony just let her sit and don’t take care of her hooves. I have horses but I pay someone to trim my horses hooves. The pony’s hooves are taller and longer than my horses. 🤦‍♀️

Sybil, Sounds like You should probably have a skilled Farrier come and trim the Pony. The important thing is to stop the conditions that caused the founder, feed issues, If you don't have control over that, it's an up hill battle. It would need trimmed more often because they grow faster. Without a visual I can only go by my experience. It's a steady project.

The people that own the pony live in a pretty remote area where ferriers don’t travel to so I’m the pony’s only hope. They moved her to a pen where she can’t have fresh grass and is fed grass hay. I’ll watch that other video and hopefully I can try my best to help the pony.

@@RosieandFriends1 Well that's a good start.you will get good practice. Having some good hoof nippers would be good. Your farrier should have a used pair that you could buy that would serve the purpose. The feet are always growing so you can keep improving your skill. Hope the video helps. That’s the crazy thing, l don’t smoke. To much hay dust, welding smoke, and various other farm related stuff. I played music at bars in second hand smoke, probably didn’t help.
