Meet Finch! He is a 9 year old Dartmoor Hill Pony gelding around 11 hands high. He had a tough start in life and came into Gills care as a frightened and un-well 3 year old and learned to slowly trust humans.
Finch is from a different environment to the typical domestic horse and despite great care, he succumbed to laminitis in 2018 and again in February 2019. This I believe developed into mechanical laminitis and when we first visited in May 2019, Gills vet was extremely concerned and recommend he be euthanized. Thankfully, together we worked out a treatment plan and he is free from laminitis!
Gill has learned how to provide the best environment for Finch and his fellow Dartmoor Hill Pony friends and he continues to become healthier and sounder - I believe one day soon he will have healthier hooves than most horses in domestication!
Trimming is both science and art and in this video I wanted to show that effective teamwork between owner, vet and hoof carer is essential to recovery. Gill and I also wanted to provide hope and inspiration to those seeking to support horses with laminitis. We wish to thank vet Rick Browne from Browne and McKinney in Broughton, Cumbria for his support and faith!
It is ALWAYS better to prevent laminitis (and any disease) wherever possible.

Excellent result! It just shows what difference a good trim can make and how bad trimming can cause problems too. Well done 👍

Thanks Roger! it's nice when a vet appreciates our approach and can discern the effects trimming can have - it can make or literally break and end horses lives and it doesn't have to be that way :-)
