Prevention is better than cure, and this is especially true for laminitis (meaning inflammation of the laminae) and which can result in premature death or prolonged lameness and pain. It is one of the most common complaints of lameness in the UK now and is said to be at epidemic proportions.
Laminitis often presents long after early indicators are first present. In this video, we share with you signs of inflammation in "Nelly"; a pony which is immuno-compromised after living in a toxic environment for most of his life. He is 20 years old now and like his herd members (who shared his previous environment), he is prone to systemic inflammation which, if unresolved; can lead to laminitis and founder.
We hope that be documenting and sharing our experiences, both with our own herd and clients we support; we are able to help other professionals, owners and carers recognise signs of inflammation and dis-ease and become more proactive in preventing disease, lameness and loss of performance in horses.
We believe many horses are now showing sign of a loss of homeostasis (balance) and the myriad of diseases and conditions experienced by horses in domestication warrant closer investigation as the the root cause. This will help us all create healthier environments for horses where we see fewer issues and greater well-being, longevity and resilience!
