True laminitis (inflammation in the lamellae) often presents after early indicators are first present. Prevention, they say, is better than cure, and this is especially true for laminitis and which can result in premature death or prolonged lameness and pain. It is one of the most common complaints of lameness in the UK now and is said to be at epidemic proportions.
Recognition and timely (and appropriate) intervention is critical in managing laminitis prone or sensitive horses and by sharing Suns story, I hope to raise awareness of this.
I believe many horses are now showing sign of a loss of homeostasis (balance) and the myriad of diseases and conditions experienced by horses in domestication warrant closer investigation as to the root cause. This will help us all create healthier environments for horses where we see fewer issues and greater well-being, longevity and resilience!
In this video, I introduce “Sun”, a 19 year old TB mare who was adopted as a stressed out 3 year old racehorse. Sun is extremely sensitive to changes in her environment and has spent half her life off grass pasture. She is prone to episodes of systemic inflammation which can lead to laminitis. X-rays as a 5 year old show pedal osteitis and later; caudally rotated pedal bones in both hinds.
I talks about Sun’s background and share with you my thoughts on early onset laminitis and demonstrate how I palpate the tissues above the hoof and look for signs of laminitis. In this instance, I believe Sun has developed stress laminitis I feel due to a small injury. We sometime don’t know what triggers it as all else seems the same to us.
The inflammation resolved within a few days and she was never more than 0.5/5 lame. Raised pluses were only found in the hinds as these are the most compromised hooves and are therefore less resilient.
Sun isn’t shod as this wouldn’t help her recover and develop more resilient hooves. Being barefoot actually helps us notice small changes and loss of soundness and we can be more proactive and respond appropriately before more significant changes occur. This may not suit all horses and the choice to support with shoes is largely determined by the environment and care the horse is exposed to.
I am constantly learning about what helps Sun and what does not. Her system I feel was compromised when in race training and she came to us emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. She then lived close to intensive agricultural activity and I believe the chemicals have severely compromised her.
I do not know if Suns metabolism can permanently heal and her resilience improve but while Sun shows her incredible zest for life, I will keep trying to help her heal and support her through times like this until we figure it out!
I hope that be documenting and sharing our experiences, both with our own herd and clients we support; we are able to help other professionals, owners and carers recognise signs of inflammation and dis-ease and become more proactive in preventing disease, lameness and loss of performance in horses.
Thank you for watching and reading. Please ask questions, share, and if you like; support our non-profit organisation which cares for Sun and 4 other sensitive horses.
