Today my Trini mom teaches us how to make her version of provision soup, or dal soup. It's something she remembers her mom making on rainy days, and it's something that I've eaten throughout my childhood. Provision soup (dal soup) is typically made with a variety of ground provisions - root vegetables, and other vegetables that grow underground. But, it also contains green fig. Another distinctive feature is the addition of "dumplings." These are not stuffed dumplings like you might expect, rather it is best to think of them as loosely shaped blobs of dough. My mom makes hers from whole wheat flour and details the way her own mother made dumplings for soup. I hope you enjoy this family recipe, and do let me know if the comments what mom should cook next!
