Did angels landing twice and while it’s stunning, we did the narrows in March at high flow in full wetsuits. Such an adventure! Also did the subway, and because we couldn’t find the trail and ended up just scrambling along the river for about 4 miles, it was awesome. Lastly we did the canyon Overlook Trail which was easy but great for a sunrise, and you can scramble up some sketchy slabs to the right to get to a saddle. Ended up not completing this due to time but looked epic

We travel to Zion most years. We plan w.a.y ahead and make reserves at the Zion Lodge in Zion. Just pick a date and remember you can always cancel. (Most National Parks now are up to a year out for reserves.). That has some GREAT advantages: 1). You can drive right to the lodge and park there. You are given a hang permit for your car, which you show when entering the canyon. 2). At about 5 pm most of the tourists leave to go to Springdale for dinner and sleep and you basically have the whole canyon to yourself! It’s amazing to walk around then, bike, short hikes (depending on the amount of light left...not much in the fall but you have the whole day there for longer hikes.). 3) Watching the sun go down inside those big mountains is just magic. 4) Dinner at the lodge is great!! Best times to go: March/April, September/October

Excellent video!!! I have hiked several of the trails and they are all beautiful. You are so right about Angel Landing being dangerous. Many years ago a co worker fell to her death on that hike while her husband was taking a photo of her against the backdrop. Be very careful and take your time on that particular trail. Happy hiking...

Just to add something about angels landing: if you are doing the hike during cooler months, I highly recommend bringing gloves for the sections with chains! The metal gets very cold and can be uncomfortable to hold on to without them

@@TripAstute In the video I didn't see anybody hiking Angel's Landing using trekking poles. Do you recommend them in this hike?
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
It’s a good question. It’s not the most technical trail until you get to the last section, so trekking poles probably aren’t as crucial. The last ascent to Angels Landing is technical, but there are chains bolted to the cliff side that you’ll want to use instead. Some kind of trekking pole or stick is definitely needed for The Narrows though! Hope that’s helpful. 😊

I'm staying in Springdale.
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
I think it's definitely doable. We did the hike in about 4 hours, but it really depends on your fitness level and how many stops you make along the way. The last part up to Angels Landing is slower too since it's narrow and exposed. Though between Angels Landing and the Narrows, I think Angels Landing is a safer bet (in terms of time) since you don't have to worry about the water levels and all the extra gear.

I was raised in you and visited the parks back in the 50's and 60's, that was when the population was rather low and an outdoor adventure not a popular so you could go their with no reservations, no crowds. Most parks were out of the way and hiking was really at your own risk. No signs, no warnings no holding your hand. Moab as a sleepy town that a drive in restaurant was about as good as it got. Sad to see it go but now I'm 70 and don't plan on those kind of adventures.
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I think it's great that more people are visiting the parks. Though at the same time, I find some of the visitors and constant posing for photos to be so disruptive to the experience. It's definitely a complex issue! 😬

Planning to go in August. Would it be feasible to do Narrows (to Wall Street), Observation Point, and Canyon Overlook in one day?
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, that would be a lot for one day. Observation Point is fairly grueling, especially in the heat. The Narrows isn't overly difficult, but can be tiring depending on the water flow. To be honest, I would probably do them on separate days to be safe.
@nickcellini64144 жыл бұрын
@@TripAstute Wow, thanks for the quick reply! That was what we were thinking. Unfortunately we are only there for 1 day as part of a few stops. I'd definitely plan to go back again and do Angels Landing and whatever we skip. Which 2 would you recommend doing for sure? We are in pretty good shape and up for a challenge (within reason of course). Thanks again!
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
No problem. I would try to do the Narrows first, especially since it's possible that it could be closed due to the water level (i.e., you'll want to do it if you have the opportunity since it's often closed). The Canyon Overlook is short and fairly easy, so I think it might be a good one to pair with the Narrows. In fact, you could probably do the Narrows in the morning, then do Canyon Overlook, and another 1-2 shorter hikes in the afternoon. Since you're both in good shape too, you could possibly do Angel's Landing on the same day as the Narrows. In my opinion, I thought Angel's Landing was physically easier than Observation Point. It's just a bit more daunting mentally! 😊

What are your thoughts on June or July travel ace video
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
June to August is the peak season to visit the parks. That being said, it does sound like the national parks may be reopening soon. Though I wouldn't book any trips until that's confirmed. 👍

Awesome video. Looks amazing! We are going next week. Would you recommend spending longer here than Bryce? So far we are spending 3 nights in each location. Zion looks more my style. Love to be near water. Thanks in advance!
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Zion is a much larger park with more varied hikes and landscapes. Bryce has one of the most breathtaking landscapes but is much easier to explore in a single day (i.e., you can spend multiple days there, but the landscape won't be very different). To be honest, I would focus one day at Bryce, and spend the rest of the time at Zion. There is so much to do at Zion and certain hikes can be restricted based on the weather (e.g., The Narrows). If you have more time, you can plan out based on the weather. Also, depending on your comfort hiking, you may want to consider some of the permit-only hikes like the Subway. Hope you have an awesome trip! 😎

Thank you for these tips!! Hoping to get out to Zion soon! And thanks for reminding me about the annual park pass. I turn 62 on the 10th and am planning to get myself the lifetime senior park pass. Btw, you play the ukulele? If so, Aloha....I was born and raised on Oahu...hence the word "Shaka" in my business name.....I rock/ice climb and hike and when I get to the top, I always throw a 🤙🏽

like to know about the Tripod rules. Can you take one? Can you take one but only use it in certain parts of the park?
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
I did a Google search and it seems unclear to me. I would contact the National Park Service directly just to be safe. Also, this post seems to suggest that the rules have been relaxed to allow tripods again: petapixel.com/2018/01/16/zion-national-park-bans-tripods-photography-workshops/

I use a Peak Design Capture Clip on my backpack and camera: amzn.to/30jwI6L It's an ARCA-Swiss plate too, so it works with my studio set-up at home (i.e., I converted all my tripods and mounts to ARCA-Swiss). 🤓

Thank you for this! Not sure if you still monitor comments but did you take your camera through the Narrows and if so how did you protect it from water? My husband has an expensive camera and is determined to bring with him!

It was definitely a bit dicey. I ended up holding my camera on a clip attached to my backpack strap and didn't push pass waist-deep water. We probably could have ventured further, but I didn't want to risk it with our gear. 😬

We did the Narrows in the month of August. It will definitely be colder in October. We were just in Bryce Canyon National Park two weeks ago, and temperature was much cooler than we expected.

This video helped so much! Thank you! What are the spots that must not be missed while visiting Zion national park? We are planning a trip there but we have time constraints. We probably will have only 3-4 hours for this place. And we will have elderly people with us. So hiking is not an option! What will you recommend given our circumstances?
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful. If you have some elderly travelers, I recommend the Canyon Lookout as you'll get some incredible views without having to walk too far. The Lower Emerald Pools might be an option too, as it's an easy walk. Lastly, there is a lodge in the center of the park that might be a good place to get a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery.

I really liked the Weeping Rock trail, but I heard that it might be closed due to some rockfall. However, there are a ton of easier trails that are perfect for kids. I would definitely check in with the park rangers at the visitor center to get the latest recommendations and conditions. Hope you have an awesome trip! 😎

We will arrive there Wed night (Aug 5). We'll have 2 days to explore. Unfortunately, due to a couple of recent surgeries, I'm very deconditioned and will be limited to hikes that are less than 3 miles. I'm really curious about going to Canyon Overlook before sunrise. Did you catch any spots to watch the sunrise? Also, any suggestions for places to watch sunsets (and still catch the shuttle!). Thanks for your informative video. I hope to be back in condition to get into the Narrows and Angels Landing next year.

Thanks! Glad the video was helpful. Unfortunately, we didn't get up in time to see the sunrise during our two trips to Zion. Though I imagine Canyon Lookout might be a great place to see it. And it's an easy and short hike, so it should fit the bill. Hope you have a wonderful trip to the park! 😊

How was the narrows with your camera we are going to Zion at the end of the week and i have a dslr and 4 lenses I usually carry with me any suggestions?
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
It was ok for most of the Narrows. We stopped at Wall Street, so we only encountered water up to our hip. When we were there, going beyond Wall Street required entering water that was chest deep. I definitely recommend going light if possible. Also, make sure to pack your gear in dry bags to be safe. Hope you have a great trip! 😊

hello 👋 what do you recommend for two full days of hiking in zion?? thank you 😊
@TripAstute2 жыл бұрын
That's a tough question since it depends on your fitness level and experience. I would definitely try for 4 hikes (one in the AM and one in the PM). The Narrows and Angels Landing are probably the most popular, but it's also possible that either or both could be closed. The Subway hike is also amazing, but that is an entire day hike, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're willing to give up an entire day for it.

Awesome tips in all one video so I don’t have to look anywhere else. Planning to go in late March for beginner and young kids . Narrow path looks great but not sure the water level for my 5 year old . What’s your advice? Thanks so much
@TripAstute3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. To be honest, it really depends on the water current and height when you visit. Also, the water temperature will likely be cold until late Spring. When we went in the summer, the water level was about waist high and I would not have recommended it for younger or smaller hikers. That being said, it gets more challenging as you make your way down the trail, so you can always turn around if your young one find it a bit too deep or scary. Hope that's helpful. Have a wonderful trip! 😊

Is Thanksgiving 2020 good time to visit Zion and do narrows and angles landing? Is it safe?
@TripAstute4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. Angels Landing might still be safe, but you'll want to check with the rangers at the visitors center. The first time we went in the early Spring, there was still some ice on the trail. The Narrows is probably going to be a bit more complicated too since the water levels may be higher due to wet weather (not to mention the cold temperatures).

Good morning. Thank you very much for your videos, these are very informative. We will travel to Zion in 2 weeks, we are nervous. We have: 2 hiking poles for each of us, diving socks that we will use together with our water shoes. Do you think we're okay with that? or do you think it is better to rent the equipment there?. Thank you for your help
@TripAstute3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. I think you should be ok with that set-up. The only thing to keep in mind is that your equipment will likely get very worn out due to all the rocks. If you want to keep them from wearing out too soon, then it might be worth renting some of the equipment. However, if you don't mind the excessive wear and tear, then I would go with what you have. Hope you have a wonderful trip to Zion! 😎

There is so much information about deaths on Angel’s Landing. A few years ago, a young teen boy slipped, fell, and died. We were next to a group of rangers who “deconstructed” the accident ( we overheard them) and what actually happened was this kid was jumping from rock to rock on the most technical part, turned his ankle and fell. Jumping!! Not exactly what was reported. That isn’t to make light of his death, but he didn’t just “fall” off. The idea is to be slow and smart. If heights bother you, don’t go. If you’re very out of shape, don’t go. If you’re exhausted when you get to the steep part, go the other way (there is a fork in the trail there).
@TripAstute5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I remember seeing a few folks dangling along the end in order to get a picture. A strong gust of wind or some other distraction could easily result in a serious injury or death. It's all about taking it slow and having strong situational awareness. 👍
