Great review! I just bought this pack after watching and reading a ton of reviews about how it was well designed, well laid out, and (most importantly) super comfortable. Upon setting it up and trying it out, it was by far the most uncomfortable pack I have ever had. Like you pointed out, the strip of padding in the middle bows out and pushes in to your back in a very uncomfortable way. I honestly thought I had set up the bag wrong or something. I just sent it back for a return because, while I loved the layout and how everything was organized, if I can’t wear, I can’t use it. Keep up the great work!

Agree with all of your review points. including the size and water bottle pockets. I had 3 axioms till date, with the current one being the V2. The back panel slots affecting the carry on your back, to the main compartment space, same gripes that I have till now. Having said that, I managed these gripes by changing the way I pack the bag and so far, it is still one of my fav. It is not a "perfect pack" status for me but I enjoy it. But the pack (if you receive a good one with proper QC) shouts major quality. Anyway great honest review. Appreciate it!

Thanks for the review George and for taking the time to make it and share your thoughts. If I can add my thoughts to it. I've owned this pack for just under 2 years, it's been my daily carry. I bought it to replace the litespeed I had ( 5 years old at that point), I wanted something less strappy and tactical for the city and work. For me it has been the best bag I've owned, hands down. Expensive for sure, but if my litespeed is anything to go by I know I'll get solid years out of it. I'm 6'1", 180 and it fits me really well, ends up sitting just above my belt line so it's never jamming me there when loaded. I carry a 16" MBP in it so I don't have the bulk issue you have had with the back panel. I find it extremely comfortable empty or loaded and like that it keeps its silhouette consistent. When I need extra support the load lifters lock it down. I can run with this pack and the combination of great thick straps and shape just seem to keep it in place, it doesn't swing around like other packs I've had. I think the slight wedge shape to it helps distribute the weight in a very successful and comfortable way and may be why it feels good if I start running with it. Like you I'll also use it as a camera bag if I'm just going out scouting by dropping in a tenba BYOB Camera insert. But I use this for every day, so it's a balance between space and how big a bag I want to carry, so I adjust my load to fit the bag. I am professional photographer, when I fly and need to bring more gear I switch to something in the 40L range, currently Peaks Travel Bag. As a commentator said: mission specific ; ) I've heard some people complain about noise of the material. Never noticed it. Ever ; ). This pack looks almost new 2 years in. Dirt wipes off, unlike cordura where it builds up over time. I live in the tropics and often get caught in the rain and the zippers are still perfect and water tight. This bag has never leaked on me. Side pockets I use for small folding umbrella in the wet season, or my wet clothes after the gym or a pair of size 10.5 shoes, I don't tend to carry a water bottle. I agree with you the top pocket is odd. I almost never end up using it as it's shallow and not protected. I'd suggest thinking of it as a low use spot, maybe it carries smaller once in a while objects. Perhaps a small first aid kit. Front panel, all good, plenty of options. I like that there are secondary zippers with deep pockets, so I feel I can put my phone it there and zip it away safely, knowing it take time and effort for a pick pocket to get to it. For me the pack swings easily over my shoulder and I can get into the front panel when I need. Again after two years of daily use, the straps have kept there form well so it's easy to do this or get it on and off. Not sure why but this design catches my watch strap less frequently that my litespeed. Top handle is the best I've used. Again it may come down to the shape of your hand, which look thicker than mine. Perhaps your version is tighter than mine, the bag was tweaked in 2020 I believe. I wrapped my litespeed in paracord to get some extra grip and thought I'd need to here. Nope, even fully loaded this is very comfortable. TAD has gone a great job integrating the handle and an extra tough layer of material so that the handle really connects well to the whole bag and not just a tiny section of it. I wish some of my travel bags did this. Again, hands down the best pack I've owned and the standard against which I judge all my others.

George you are absolutely spot on! I bought this pack last year and in my country it was $600 not $365. Bottom line it’s too small, water bottle pockets don’t work and I crammed so much stuff in it it started to come apart. I swapped it out for a green room rainmaker VX42 rip stop in black and never looked back.

Totally agree with your comments. I am a big TAD fan but lately have been disappointed by their backpacks. The Axiom seems to have gone "form over function". The water bottle pockets are totally useless if you want to use the main compartment for full size items that are US Letter sized (notepads, books etc). And the laptop compartment to not be suspended is a huge oversight as well, and why make it zippered on both sides? On side is enough. Hard pass on this backpack for me.

What is the functionality in GR1? water res? - no, weight? - no, org? - no, clever? - no that with $325 all people hyped because the real fist urban ruck. And that is all in Axiom24. Capacity with the number 24 but Axiom can put more stuff when compare to UA24, GR1 26 -- tested.

Great review, George. Thank you. Good honest review on the Axiom 24. It has major issues ... it’s too darned small. Everything you put in the hidden pockets takes away from an already too small main compartment. Everything on this pack is small and dainty. It’s great to look at but fails miserably on function. I ended up with three of them, and I’ll sell mine and my wife is returning hers ... too small for her. It’s almost a purse-sized pack. If TAD makes an Axiom 30, I’ll come back around. In the mean time, I’m waiting for my Alpha One Niner Pathfinder to come in.
