sundance cassidy, most top male figure skaters can do the 3A. the 1st male 3A i believe was 1978. Brian Orser did the 1st in the olympics in 1984. Midori Ito was the 1st lady to do the 3A in 1988 and she was also the 1st lady to do the 3A at the olympics in 1992. To date, 8 women have landed the 3A in international competition. Kimmie Meisner of the US did a 3A at US nationals in 2005 I believe but that was not international so she is not counted in the 8.

@@nickgarner7460 - Vern Taylor did the 1st 3A in 1978. Since then it has become a standard jump for male figure skaters competing at national and international levels. There is no count I can find because it would be too many to count. If you watch Midori's 1990 worlds LP in Halifax on either the Canadian or UK versions, the triple axel she did was so incredible that Toller Cranston on the Canadian version and Alan Weeks on the UK version said her triple axel was as good or better then any in the competition including the men, implying all the men did the 3A at the competition.

Well, just imagine this. Try to jump as high as you could by your own force. Then try now to jump when someone pushed your feet up. You’re going to know that you can jump higher when you have that assistance. And that is the secret of the jumps in figure skating. The higher you jump, the better and the more spin you do on the air. So why Axels are so special? Well, there are other jumps that also don’t have that toe pick assistance but all of them start at a backward position and landing on a backward position again- creating the number of spins needed. So if you spin in the air 3 times then it is a triple. On the other hand, axels have a forward approach and backward landing- giving an extra half rotation. So if you want to have your axel count as a 3A, you must spin in the air 3 1/2 revolutions. But I want to also take note that when you jump in figure skating, both height and distance are important. And the physics comes in there.

If you are going to do a feature on ladies performing the triple axel, Midori Ito comes first. Not only as the 1st woman to complete the triple axel in world competition, but also the 1st woman to complete the triple axel at the Olympics. Her triple axels are always rated the best. Tonya only learned to do the triple axel because she saw Midori do it at the NHK competition in Japan in 1990. If you want to see a perfect triple axel watch Midori's long program skate at the 1990 Worlds at Halifax. In all 3 broadcasts of the competition, U.S., Canada and U.K. the commentators said it was the most incredible jump ever performed in world competition by a female competitor. Toller Cranston, the famous Canadian figure skater who was doing the Canadian broadcast said it was probably the best triple axel done at the competition including the men.
@lsrasr158
@lsrasr158 5 жыл бұрын
@The Name Thing Is Not Happening KZbin Tonya tried a triple axel at the 1990 US Olympic Festival Figure Skating in her free skate and fell on it. That was before the 1990 NHK I mentioned above. I don't know if she attempted a 3A in competition before that or how long she may have been practicing it. A 2005 Spokane article I read on Tonya said that when Tonya and her coach Dody saw Midori land an incredible triple axel in practice at the 1990 NHK, Tonya decided when she got back home she would learn and add the triple axel to her program which she did at US Nationals in 1991. Midori I read was attempting the 3A in practice at 14 or 15 years old but suffered a fractured ankle so her coach banned it. After the Calgary olympics in 1988, Midori said in an interview that she decided she had to reactivate the triple axel in order to win at the world and olympic level. Her goal was to attempt and land a triple axel at the 1992 Olympics.

It’s not the issue of understanding the talent, it’s about having interest in the activity in general. I have no real interest in a triple axel or anything about figure skating in general, but I don’t deny the fact that those figure skaters have talent or tons of hours of practice. I tried figure skating, it’s bloody tough. Yeah if I kept at it I would have been good by now but it just wasn’t my thing. The sport doesn’t appeal to me, it’s just a meh. I’m sure those people know that skaters have talent, they’re just not interested in the sport in general. It that could be said of a lot of other activities besides skating.

That editing drove me bonkers 😒 The whole time I was trying to understand the move so I could appreciate it and they would start to show the move and I would think, "Ah yes, here it is," and then they WOULD CUT AWAY. Then I was just annoyed with whatever they would show or say afterwards. Not even sure how many times that exact thought sequence happened during the whole thing. I'm definitely not watching again to count.

Why is there always so much more focus on Americans? Tonya Harding was the first American woman to do a triple axel, but she was not the first woman in the world. Midori Ito was, but Tonya always seems to get mentioned a lot more when the triple axel is brought up. It's ridiculous.

Hello! Please watch "I, Tonya" (if you haven't) because this says A LOT about Tonya Harding's backstory :) She has been through a lot, and yes maybe Midori did worked harder than her, but have you seen what Tonya has been through? She was raised from an abusive family where her mom forced her into skating and even went as far as to cancel her education. Following this, she ran away from home to live with her ex-husband only to know that he was abusive as well towards her. Also, if this wasn't disheartening enough, she got caught in a scandal where she is partly guilty for wanting to send death threat letters however she never planned to hurt Nancy Kerrigan physically (and for this she was given a 3 year life sentence far worse than the main suspects themelves while also having her career being put to an end). So I want to ask you to please, give Tonya Harding a shot at being put to the spotlight because this is the only and last time she will ever be in it. I love Midori too! She's so amazing for pulling off the courage and determination to do the first ever triple axle, but yes I just want Tonya to be acknowledged as well :)

If you have to watch a movie to more more about her than just her crime, then she obviously isn't known for much outside of that

SisterAreDoingIt ForThemselves Actually when my dad broke his shoulder (fractured in four different areas) he didn't feel the pain of his shoulder, only the black eye he had gotten, he hadn't even noticed his arm was broken until he tried to move his arm and it felt numb. My brother broke his leg, split right down the middle of the bone and he hadn't felt anything, he couldn't walk on it but he never screamed in pain, only told the guy that tackled him that it was a good hit.

The triple axel is no longer such a big deal, due to boundaries being pushed. The Quad axel has now become the jump to shoot for.
