It common for people to shift body language depending on the culture they learned that language in. Example, I learned Spanish in Spain so when I speak Spanish I animate how Spaniards do. I speak American English so I animate my body language as an American. Language is more than just speaking

I learned Japanese over thirty years ago ( I only managed the language to a rudimentary level) but I can say truly that my body language changed quite radically whenever I attempted to speak Japanese. BTW, I’m British and English is my first language. My Japanese friend said that I looked like a little Japanese lady and she even gave me a Japanese name; I felt very honoured that she did this. Unfortunately, I have lost most of the language because I didn’t use it or practice it consistently.
@offthesidelines

A lot of multilingual folks actually do that too - it often has to do with the people/environments where you learned/spoke each language the most. I did that a lot when I was younger but now that I'm much older, the distinction isn't as obvious anymore (probably because my brain has gotten so used to switching languages, growing up in a hugely multicultural city and meeting more and more fellow bilingual/multilingual peeps). Now it has more do with who I'm talking to. In my teens and young 20s my friends were always so shocked at how different I sounded from one language to another. 😆

I have noticed a distinct change in my body language even when speaking _Singlish_ (the Singaporean creole of English). I find that remarkable because I never learned anything more than a few useful phrases of any one distinct Asian language. But when I codeswitch to Singlish, even the posture of my neck changes.

This is so cute, but it also makes me realize a lot of the time I see couples from different countries…usually it’s the spouse learning English for their partner. It’s not as common to see the English speaking partner commit and learn their loved one’s entire language!! Its heartwarming really

not true, my brother-in-law (husband's sister's husband) is from Mexico and we all took Spanish classes to be able to communicate. He learned English because he was staying in America and needed it. We learned to cook food from his state Oaxaca (wha-ha-kah) Most will learn English because English is needed if they're staying in an English speaking country, But if you're in a foreign country, most Americans learn that language

If you live somewhere where english is the usual english of course you will see the partners trying to learn english. It's smart to know the language of where you live.. When english speaking people move to different countries to be with their partner there, they are the ones to learn the language there. What is actualy common is for people to learn the language of the country they live in. So the partner that was born in that country will have less need to learn the language of the partner that moved on. Its less common for partners to learn each others langauages when one language has no purpose in the country they live. It's sweet when a partner does it though.

@@Chrisphill02 I mean I didn’t say it doesn’t happen lol. I simply stated in MY experience what I’ve seen. Also Spanish is super common in America so people are often more willing to learn because it’s beneficial all around. Also being that asian languages have a completely separate alphabet as well, it is not something I see often.

no it is not. If you are married to a man or woman where in their country English is not taught, then you are the one to adjust, learn the native languange. especially in Japan and Korea, if you want to work there you have to learn their language first, that is a requirement. Same goes in British countries and Australia, you have to larn English first before you can work there.

That “why” was so cute!, and so heartfelt. Litereally why learn Korean when you live in Japan you should be learning Japanese, because yes that makes sense. HOWEVER we are talking about Orientalpearl who loves learning language so of course she’s also learning Korean. :)😊 and other languages. God i gotta learn a second language already it looks like fun speaking to other people around the world!
