Triple Play is a favorite tradition here at Missouri Star Quilt Company. Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own unique spin on a favorite block, technique, or template. In this episode, the talented Doan ladies share three new projects made with the Periwinkle Templates and our brand new Periwinkle Leg Templates.
Misty's Periwinkle Squared quilt is a baby-size dream made with 5" precut charms, the Mini Periwinkle Template, and the Mini Periwinkle Leg Template. Her fabric is Besties by Tula Pink for FreeSpirit Fabrics.
Natalie's beautifully bold Periwinkle Party quilt commands attention with Tiny Beasts by Tula Pink for FreeSpirit Fabrics. This quilt is made with 10" layer cake squares, the Small Periwinkle Template, and the Small Periwinkle Leg Template.
Jenny's Double Periwinkle quilt was created by a Doan Girls Retreat guest who was inspired by Misty's Periwinkles Squared quilt. It is made with True Colors Neon 10" Squares

We went to Hamilton on Tuesday. It was a beautiful day. All the shops were so nice and staff so helpful. It is a long day trip for us but granddaughter drove us. Happy time shared with her (she is not a quilter but loves seeing the happiness it brings to her mom and me). Her son and my hubby enjoyed the man cave. The 7 year old beat papa in pool. Ladies, you're having too much fun! Misty's background fabric is very pretty & love her design. Natalie's design is bold & new! But I have trouble sewing on so much black; thinking a dark gray would work for my background. Jenny's quilt, loving her light gray background, is very pretty. If you did the center diamonds that come together in a contrasting color (on Jenny’s quilt, the double periwinkle) it would have a totally different look, it would look like a cross almost. Great uses of the periwinkle template

Thank you ladies. I always enjoy the triple play tutorials. This time I nearly turned off the tutorial because the new leg template was required to make the quilts, but I'm glad I watched until the end. All three quilts were very pretty, but I enjoyed Jenny's the most. I appreciate that she didn't use the new leg template, instead showing another way to make a periwinkle quilt. I already own the periwinkle template, and the 5 x 5' ruler, (purchased from MSQC), so I'll be able to make her quilt without waiting for the new template. Thanks again ladies, you all always do a terrific job.

Natalie’s design has sooooo many points (12) coming together that I can’t imagine how bulky that is on the back. I always press to one side and no matter how flat each seam is, when i sew all my HST together, the 4 HST coming together (with 8 points in the center) is just so thick 😩

Use really thin threads. Aurifil in top and bottomline in bobbin. With those 50 and 60 weight threads the thickness is amazingly reduced. This is my experience.

I use a "leader" piece of fabric that has been through the presser foot and can hold the threads taut. I also put the points a little further under the presser foot like Jenny mentioned

My machine totally loves to “eat” the fabric. I use that “hold the thread” method Natalie mentioned, have always felt a little uneasy that I was doing something wrong. So glad to know I’m not the only one who grabs the thread. Even my little featherweight wants to eat the fabric once in a while.

With a few more rows across, Misty’s quilt would be the perfect size for my quilt guild’s Charity - and I can use any type of fabrics as the charity never has any clue the ages of the children they will have when it comes time for us to make our donations (usually in October).
