RULES:
This game uses the general rules for pocket billiards except for these changes. Check out my video for any clarification. The object of 14.1 Continuous is to be the first player to 150 points, or another agreed amount of points. Every object ball you legally pocket gives you 1 point.
On the opening break, if no called ball is pocketed, the cue ball and two object balls must each be driven to a rail or the shot is a breaking foul. A breaking foul subtracts two points from the breaker’s score and the non-breaking player may force the breaker to rebreak if he doesn’t accept the table.
The shooter remains at the table as long as he continues to legally pocket called balls or wins the game. Shots must be called. The shooter may call "safety" in which case play passes to the opponent at the end of the shot and any object ball pocketed on the safety is spotted. All balls pocketed on fouls, safeties, without a called ball having been pocketed, and all balls driven off the table are spotted. When fourteen balls from a rack have been legally pocketed, play is suspended until the balls are re-racked. When the balls are re-racked, the apex ball is omitted if only fourteen balls are being racked. The shooter may hit into the rack and break it but if no called ball is pocketed, the cue ball and two object balls must each be driven to a rail or it is a breaking foul.
If the fifteenth ball of a rack needs to be spotted and the fourteen balls have not been touched, the fifteenth ball will spot on the apex spot and the triangle is used to assure a tight rack. If the fifteenth ball was pocketed on the shot that scored the fourteenth ball, all fifteen balls are re-racked. If the 15th object ball and the cue balls interfere with the rack, then all fifteen balls are re-racked and the cue ball is in hand behind the head string.
If only the object ball interferes, it is placed on the head spot or the center spot if the cue ball blocks the head spot. If only the cue ball interferes, then it is placed on the head spot. If that spot is blocked, then it is placed behind the head string. There is no restriction on which object ball the shooter may play as the first shot of the new rack.
The shooter scores one point for legally pocketing a called shot. Each additional ball pocketed on such a shot also counts one point. Fouls are penalized by subtracting points from the offending player's score and balls are spotted as necessary and play passes to his opponent. Scores may be negative due to penalties from fouls. On a foul, the incoming player receives ball in hand behind the head string. If both a standard foul and a breaking foul happen on one shot, it is considered a breaking foul.
If a player fouls three times without making an intervening legal shot, it is a serious foul. 1 point is subtracted for the third foul as usual, then an additional 15 points are subtracted. The offending player's consecutive foul count is reset to 0 and all fifteen balls are re-racked and the offending player is required to shoot under the requirements of the opening break.
The first player to the predetermined point total is the winner.

Thank you for a consise breakdown of the rules, especially the positions of the 15 ball and cue when interfering with the rack, as that is typically not well explained in other videos.

Didn’t hear it mentioned. If only called shots gain you points, do balls made on the break give you points if you didn’t call a shot?

Error at 1:41: this is not an opening break. You need to send 1 ball to the rail only, and it is a 1 point regular foul if you don't.

an object ball is no longer spotted on the center of the table as too many players were using this as a break shot. if the object ball and cue ball are both in the rack, the 15th ball gets racked with the other 14 balls and the incoming player has cue in hand behind the headstring. The opening break is the ONLY time you must drive two balls and the cue ball to a rail, after that you must contact a ball and something, whether it be the cue ball or an object ball, must contact a rail or it's minus 1 point. If you foul intentionally (just touch the cue ball with no intention of making something contact a rail), you must do so with the TIP of your cue. If you touch the cue ball with any other part of your cue, ie tap it with your ferrule, it is a DELIBERATE foul and is a reduction of 15 points ( see 2000 US Open 14.1 match Dallas West v Efren Reyes). The game is call pocket only, doesn't matter if the ball you call goes 4 rails, as long as it goes in the pocket you call.

Error at 2:25 - should be the cue ball behind the head string (in-hand). WPA rules 4.8 Special Racking Situations: "(d) If only the cue ball interferes, then it is placed as follows: if the object ball is in front of or on the head string, the cue ball is in hand behind the head string; if the object ball is behind the head string, the cue ball is spotted on the head spot, or on the center spot if the head spot is blocked."

Does anyone know if OP is indeed reciting the BCA rules for 14.1 continuous verbatim? There are things he does not say that are implied by the things he does say, and which will come Into play. I am looking to have my question interpreted with exactitude and replied to in the same fashion.

So if you are breaking with 14 balls in the rack do you have to have two balls and the cue hit a rail? Can the shooter pocket the 15th ball without touching the 14 racked balls and then play a safe on the subsequent shot? If so how many balls need to hit a rail on that shot? I know strategy dictates that you USUALLY carom the cue into the rack on this break but neither my friends nor I have the ability level to run out racks so for us breaking soft in that situation is a better strategy so we need to know how to do so legally.

Opening break - try to drive two balls to the rail ONLY out of the rack. NOT an 8-ball break. Subsequent breaks are NOT a 2 point breaking foul. That only applies to opening break. After that, any time a foul or scratch occurs, their is a 1-ppoint penalty.
@awolf913
@awolf913 3 жыл бұрын
Also to mention where two object balls hit a rail on the opening break, should the player scratch, it is only a one point penalty as potting the cue ball counts as striking the rail.

The main ones are 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, straight pool, and one pocket (less popular). There are lots of others too. Many variations of 8 ball. 7 ball, bank pool, 3 cushion, snooker, 6 ball, 3 ball, ring game, and too many more to name

You are also incorrect about cue ball positioning. After 14 balls are racked with a remaining object ball, if only the cue ball is in the rack it goes to the kitchen.

You are incorrect about subsequent breaking fouls. The breaking foul only applies on the first opening break of the match, not subsequent breaks.

The idea is to make any ball on the table by calling the ball and pocket and reach a score of 150, 1 point each for every called ball pocketed. Doesn't matter if it's a solid or stripe and no specific order is required. To reach 150, the balls are racked after all but one are made. Good players, as a strategy, will save a ball that's sitting close to where the 14 balls will be racked as their final ball to shoot. This way they can both pocket the final ball and break the 14 balls of the rack in the same shot, by deflection (carom) of the cue ball, so that they can continue shooting. Repeat until one player wins by scoring 150 points, or however many points are agreed upon in order to win.

Doesn't matter if it's a solid or stripe and no specific order is required. To reach 150, the balls are racked again after all but one are made. Balls are racked like normal except there is an empty spot at the head of the rack where the first ball would usually sit. Good players, as a strategy, will save a ball that's sitting close to where the 14 balls will eventually be racked as their final ball to shoot. This way they can both pocket the final ball and break the 14 balls of the rack in the same shot, by deflection (caroming) of the cue ball, so that they can continue shooting. Repeat until one player wins by scoring 150 points, or however many points are agreed upon in order to win. This video was mostly explaining fouls and how they are handled in the game. He did a pretty good job explaining everything but a little more elaborating might have helped for those who knew nothing at all about the game.

diferent strokes for different folks. There's one pocket, short/long rack banks game (one uses 9 ball, other 8 ball rack), 9ball. Then if you get into billiards we can talk about balkline, carom, 2/3 cushion. Don't know the name of this game but a friend introduced me to a game where there's only 2 balls, 1 object and the cue. you have 4 quadrants on each corner of the table. Each quadrant is between where the first diamond from the corner pockets meet. You have to hit call a quadrant and land the cueball into one of those quadrants after hitting the object ball first. You have to cross the center of the table, so if the object ball and cueball are both on the left side of the table, you have to call one of the 2 far right quadrants, or either go 1+ rails all the way back up the table passing the center of the table at least once (or theoretically twice at this point,, unless you somehow came off the tip of the side pocket perhaps).

Another interesting one we play at the local bars is Cutthroat, which is a 3 person game. each player games 5 balls, and each player's goal is to knock the other 2 players' balls in. The first to make a shot calls their balls (lows, mids, highs). There's a lot o pool games, maybe you'll find one you look

This was commonly played in pool halls where serious players would spend hours at a time drinking/smoking (and gambling) heavily. I was taught to shoot 35 years ago by an old guy who grew up in pool halls of Detroit and this was his preferred game. He called 8 ball "mickey mouse."
