Once you´re in it the reverse gallop and the 'normal' gallop sound exactly the same to me. Its just the eighth note in the beginning thats different. The pulse doesnt really change at all. I always hear the 16th notes as kind of the start of the phrase. But you did explain it well. And finally I found someone who doesn´t call a gallop a triplet and actually knows the difference. lol

A good song example that uses Gallop and reverse gallop in the same riff could be Pantera - Domination. At the end part of the song they play it slowly and switches it around after a couple of bars. i think it goes reverse gallop --> gallop --> short turnaround, repeat

I think it has to do with sticking with the groove and people usually "feel" the gallop better when doing it down-up-down down-up-down way. That's because in between the first picks of each group of three you're missing exactly one up-pick, so if you keep moving your picking hand in a constant D-U-D-U-D-U motion, you just omit every second up-pick and you've got a gallop. It just feels more natural i guess. Just my 5 cents.

Timing, it's easier for most when playing an 1/8 and 2-1/16 to strum D-U-D because it is a natural pause caused by the technicality of the move... There are much fewer people that have the timing skills to include the "pause" between the last 1/16 and the start of the 1/8th note... If I alternate my picking, I have to mentally include that "pause" which is harder to do, and impossible for most beginners... Besides, alternate picking would have you either skip your up stroke, or create the pause yourself, and the D-U-D method generates the pause for you... It's great IF you have that timing ability, but many lack the advanced timing skills it would take to create the pause under an alternate picking scenario, so the short answer would be "it's easier for beginners"...

Its done that way because your down stroke is naturally more stacatto that your up stroke. It gives the rythem its sound. Unless you specifically work on it your up stroke dose not sound like your down.

Been trying to get the 'reverse gallop' for weeks now. I'm blown away at the speed guitarists can use it. I find myself trying to use my bicep to help with speed, as if to control the downward stroke with my arm, upward twitch with my wrist and the continued motion of my arm for the second downward stroke, I end up clogged with lactic acid before long. I imagine I'm compensating for a shear lack of precision and speed in my wrist but I just don't seem to be getting any faster. Any advice?

It takes a lot of time, patience and practice. Slow it down, get conscious of excessive tension and release it before proceeding to faster speeds.

I understand most phrases within the guitar language, but can you expand on the 1/8 and 1/16 and bars? I kinda skipped over that. That and sharps, the important stuff I guess. I just went on feel honestly. Is it weird to say I just have a feel for it? Like with the two 4ths. I can hear it in my head and know what's next. A bar just divides the piece of music. Most music has four beats per bar. 8th notes are worth half a beat and 16th notes are worth a quarter of a beat.

I would've been using a TonePort at this time with the bundled Gearbox software. The preset would've been either Angel P-Ball, Metal Man or Diamond Plate. I now use Aurora's Rhino VST, Helix Native or Line 6 Metallurgy VST suite.

Hey Cory, I am an intermediate guitarist and i am just beginning to get this rhythm down. Still by far the most difficult thing about this is the pick positioning itself. The rhythm I can manage but I wonder, pick thickness? I wonder too about angle of the pick as it seems turning it so that the strings glide up and down the triangle shaped ramping of the pick. That seems to help, or should I just force the pick through and make the strings move around rather more rather than angle the pick or use a softer pick? Furthermore, how far from the bridge or neck that I should be doing this is a wonder. There's a lot of details going on here that seem to greatly affect this gallop movement. I wish I had those details figured as just pick angle right now takes me from "able" to "zero" right now. So I wonder how much I'm still missing that could make this much easier.

I use 1.2mm Dunlop Jazz III's. The pick's hardness makes it much easier to push through the strings. Since it's a Jazz 3, it's very pointy which allows for more precise and faster picking. When you're picking, I just using edge picking, it's not hard and I'm pretty sure you already do it by what I read in your comment, it's not a difficult technique, and almost everyone does it naturally to some extent. You want the edge of your pick to be parallel to the string, but not too much, also make sure you aren't picking flat against the strings, it gives more resistance to the pick, unlike edge picking. As for your palm, I usually keep it close enough to the bridge before the point where my palm won't mute the strings. Basically, don't pick too close to the neck, but dont pick too close to the bridge. You'll find a sweet spot where you'll find no resistence or wacky tone. Hope this helps.
