As an avid "upcycler," I too despise pallet wood (this is coming from a guy who rips apart old appliances and who is presently saving his milk-jugs for an upcoming project). It quite simply isn't worth the labor that must be invested into it. But- I once had a job where all of the old pallets on site had 4x4 bottom skids made from solid hardwood, which was a treat of a resource. Now they all seem to have been replaced by garbage MDF blocks, further declining quality, along with my desire to "upcycle." It's all trendy hipster hype; pallet wood is only good for kids to make forts with in the woods, and that's it.

One thing that pallet wood is awesome for is rustic/western/country style projects, where the character of the pallet actually contributes to the aesthetic. I've done a country-themed room for one of my boys in it, and while it does require some decent prep and sanding, the authenticity really comes across. That said, unless you're going for that look, it's a great way to dull blades, invest a ton of time in prep, and realize why there are a lot of pallets sitting about.

pocket83 Yep, forts for kids and barricades for adults. They are also often treated with some seriously carcinogenic wood preservatives, but that doesn't bother me as much as the programmes on TV with middle / upper class people making beds out of them, while tramps sleep on pallets for necessity. Pfff.

+pocket83 ...Actually, I find quite a few good pieces of my palletwood. The secret is planing them down a few mics to get to smooth wood. I made a simple planer out of a wood jig upon which rides my router with a 2" Surface planing router bit. A few quick back and forths and I have perfectly planed, smooth lumber. Made another quick jig that allows me to scarf boards quickly (after cutting out the holes), which allows me to join them together for longer piece. More work? Sure. But I've easily saved a few thousand in lumber last year if I had to buy it. Plenty of crap pieces to use for supports, or prototyping. But if you know what to look for (grain tightness, species, etc.) you'd be surprised at how many quality boards you'll find once you clean them up. Assuming your area isn't just full of the engineered wood crap pallets...

wordsnwood I'll follow up this video with a mini build and sketch-up model of the parts. It is very simple to make in theory.
