1968 song. The psychedelic era still in sway-thus the exploratory musical interludes. Big hit-# 1 in my home country Canada. 14 @ the time. Whenever came on the radio we'd turn it up LOUD.

The late 60s - so good . for those of us that can still remember this was the sound of the time . you would have fit right in - but then you would fit in ANY time ! Groovy baby (lol)

The band name refers to the novel of the same name by Hermann Hesse (German writer). Hesse and especially this novel were very popular among young people at that time (late 60s early 70s).

It's "trippy" - They take you on a mindtrip to a distant place you never knew existed. All you gotta do is close your eyes, vibe to it and reach subspace (sub-conscious space aka altered state of mind aka trance). You'll return sometime once the sound fades... or you choose to dream on some more... Also by Steppenwolf: Steppenwolf: Born To Be Wild This song will give you the perfect Easy Rider feeling, cruising down the highway into the sunset on your Harley or Indian. I've never owned or driven a motorcycle/chopper but it gives me these perfect vibes...

Yeah there you go right be tween the speakers. This was a time when the flower child, hippies, was happening! Acid trips, weed, Quaaludes, hence Magic carpet ride !!!

Groovy! "Magic Carpet Ride" was a top ten hit for Steppenwolf in 1968 and a classic rock radio staple ever since. I suspect that most folks back then thought the song was about taking an "acid trip", that is, taking LSD and more or less hallucinating for several hours. "Turn on, tune in, drop out" was how the old slogan went. But apparently the band was so taken by the way the new stereo technology of the era could so easily take the listener on a musical journey that they wrote this song to explore the possibilities. Steppenwolf is also well known for the songs "Born to Be Wild" and "The Pusher". Very few rock songs bounce the way "Magic Carpet Ride" bounces. J.J. Jackson "But, It's Alright" (1969) comes close, but on the soul side. And on the psychedelic rock side, without quite the same bounce, there's Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (1968) and The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today" (1967).

So many people think that it about drugs, but according to the lead singer\writer Jon Kaye it is about stereo systems evolving in the 1960's and how it improved listening to music, hence his Magic Carpet Ride of alternative semi-psychedelic sounds created with the help of stereophonic speaker systems sounds = You can catch that if you listen very closely to the lyrics

This song came out in 1968 the year my brother graduated from high school. I was behind him in 1971. This was a time of a changing USA and hair was long and young people didn't want to conform as they were expected to. We also didn't want to go to Vietnam and get shot. Lots of drugs were everywhere and the party was on.

I'm impressed with how you analyzed the lyrics and music. I used to listen to this song a lot, and I was never able to equate the specific sounds and lyrics. I think you nailed it. In regards to some of the sounds you heard, that was an example of psychedelic music which was big in the late 1960's.

STEPPENWOLF, "MAGIC CARPET RIDE". The Far Our, Psychedelic sound that STEPPENWOLF brought , with the 1960's groove leading into the 1970' s Crazy Psychedelic song "THE PUSHER"...

Those eerie sounds you hear are created by guitar feedback - it's when the sound coming out of the speakers vibrates the strings of the guitar, creating more sound out of the speakers, which then makes the strings vibrate more, and so on for as long as the strings are not muffled. Feedback is normally a sign that your setup isn't working properly, and can be dangerous to your equipment. But Jimi Hendrix pioneered the technique of harnessing and controlling this feedback to make all kinds of wild sounds with a guitar. Now many Rock guitarists (including Steppenwolf here) use the Hendrix method. If you'd like to hear an example of Hendrix using it to full effect, check out his performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock. He turns the National Anthem into a raging, tragic outcry against the senseless death of the Vietnam War. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZvdi5tsYs1snK8

This song plays in my head. No need for a radio. If I think about it. One of the great songs to come out of the trippy time when people took LSD-25, mushrooms and other things. The magic carpet ride is an LSD-25 trip a guy had with a woman who never experienced it. So he took her for a magic carpet ride. You cannot stay in one place for more than 15 minutes on LSD. They call it a trip because, you want to be foot loose and move. Bicycle, Tricycle, Automobile, Train, Plane(my friend dropped 250 micrograms and got on a plane for Hawaii). The best was our own two feet and walking a long ways outside of the city. It is scary coming back to the fuss of humanity and the carpet ride ends at asphalt. Check out Canned Heat On The Road Again. It is right with this song.

@@MrsPenPal LSD is not a drug to feel real high. It is a gift to see ourselves and what is around us. It has been in my top five experiences in life. I did not use it a lot. 10 times over 4 years. Wow factor above ten. It is not anything on the tube. Today it is not available.
