This was at a time, people were doing videos while standing in front of a wall singing, just nothing and then suddenly Michael comes with THIS! And also, there was no internet. You had to wait till they played it on TV. And kids were missing school to see the premiere of it on MTV. Even in the 90's, when MJ would release a video, it was on evening main news, like CNN, BBC News, not Entertainment TV News. Back then there wasn't this celebrity culture we have nowadays, where you get regular "news" on celebrities this truly is The Greatest Music Video Of All Time! Long Live The King Of Music Michael Joseph Jackson Forever!👑❤🔥🌟(The opening message for the "Thriller" short film is mainly placed their cause at the time MJ was getting threats by his own religion at the time the Jehovah’s Witness that if he released the short film he’d be kicked out of it so, MJ placed the message their but originally he was going to burn and destroy the entire tapes of the short film, it was a last minute decision but it shows u how much pull/influence MJ had in general that even his own religious group was worried about the short film’s impact. Also the "Thriller Rap" is done by the one & only horror icon Vincent Price. And MJ's main inspiration came from after he seen the movie "An American Werewolf in London" and got the same film director to direct his short film for "Thriller" that director is John Landis, imagine that having an actual movie director work on a music video/short film that's unheard of...only Michael Jackson I tell you only Michael Jackson.)

It's also worth mentioning, yes, every release of an MJ new song _was_ primetime but crucially he was the only artist that had that. Ever. The car at the beginning of the video is a 1957 Chevy convertible. It's set in the 1950's hence the car and Ola wearing a 1950's poodle skirt and saddle shoes. Michael gives her his class ring to wear which means she is going steady with him. That's how people dated back then. Then it switches to present day in the movie theater. FYI ... The statement at the beginning of Thriller was due to MJ's religion of being a Jehovah's Witness. He faced heavy backlash from fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses for the Thriller video/lyrics and had to add a disclaimer that assured he was not a believer in the occult or risk being disfellowshipped a.k.a kicked out. MJ almost didn't take out the music video until his record company convinced him it would be okay with a statement and the rest is history. Imagine what pop culture/Halloween would be like without Thriller. 🤯
