At almost 800 kilometers in length and with more than 15,000 meters of climbing through the remote wilderness of southern Spain, over mountains and across Europe's only desert, this was not a race for the faint of heart. This is my story of Badlands 2023.

Badlands is an ultra-distance gravel bikepacking race with both professional and amateur cyclists from around the world attending. The race involves huge amounts of bike preparation, understanding of bikepacking equipment, resupply, gear, nutrition, fitness and training, survival and resilience. The race starts in Granada, southern Spain, and heads into the Gorafe Desert and Tabernas Desert, to Almeria on the coast, and finishes halfway up the Pico del Veleta, the highest paved road in all of Europe. This year the race was won by Canadian professional cyclist, Rob Britton, with first female finisher Cynthia Frazier coming in just a few hours later. The race had over 300 riders start and over 250 finish. A big thank you to the organisers of Badlands for putting on the event, and the hospitality of the Spanish restaurant and shop owners who stayed open outside the regular hours to accomodate riders' needs.

Best video on Badlands out there. Instead of a bunch of disconnected clips without context (like most people post), you made it feel like I was going through the event with you. Great job!

You stepped up another level. After Atlas i thought "How is this guy able to ride such extreme races and still manage to tell this story while doing it" and this videos just topped the previous videos. As a bike rider and photographer who simply can't do both at the same time, you are pure inspiration - big time!

Thanks so much Chris. I can’t deny it takes quite a bit of focus and I often wonder what I could do if I weren’t trying to film at the same time, but the challenge is enjoyable and if people enjoy the end result it’s all worthwhile. So glad to be of some inspiration mate! 🙏🏼

Surreal to watch Tristan . My anxiety comes from being sick and not being strong enough to be a good dad for my 3 kids . I certainly don’t do efforts like yours but I did find strength in a modest 2 or 3 hours “ efforts “ . Watching you fighting sickness on an effort out of your comfort zone absolutely shock me and where I currently have my mental limits on . If you had any doubts on combining filming but racing please be assured you have done the job ❤

Thank you 🙏🏼 I can’t deny it takes quite a lot of commitment and dedication at the time to pull out the phone to record, and continually be thinking about shots that may be useful or required down the line, but it’s a good challenge. And when it’s well received and enjoyed, that’s amazing for me. Thanks again mate!

Put your anxiety to bed Tristan! You did a fabulous job of recording and telling a thoroughly interesting, insightful and honest story. The editing was Bob on to 👍 Massive kudos to your parents. Having spent 6 years riding around the world on a motorcycle, I fully understand what their first journey gave them, and why they would want to sail around the world again in retirement. Aged 56, I too lol forward to doing it again, only next time it’ll be on a bicycle 😉. Chapeau to all 🙌🙌🙌

That final outro gave me goosebumps, you really summed it up the appeal of ultras - to push yourself to the limit and enter that 'altered state' where both the highs and lows are amplified and you really feel ALIVE! BTW, I discovered you because I, too, participated in El Piri (7th day finisher and first ultra for me - I'm hooked). Can't wait to see the video for that one:!

OMG Could not agree more with the other comments. Just brilliant. I have watched other Badlands video and whilst many are enjoyable yours is just a step above. Similar to previous Ultra you did you capture the essence of the route and race but also your personal story with the associate challenges. Documentary film making is your calling. All the best. Hey man that was a truly great telling of your experience during Badlands. Perfect timing of course as the closing date for Badlands 2024 has just passed as we (I) await to see if our application has been successful. Of course it goes without saying well done on finishing Badlands and meeting your sub 48h goal; for an off-road event that is quite an undertaking. I enjoyed your ending too, trying to explain your sleep deprivation and hallucinations, I've been through that a number of years ago at PBP in 2019, see shapes in the trees, riding the white line through the middle of the night away from the edge of the road surrounded by the rustle of someone hiding away in their emergency blanket and it seems like every second of time passing is an eternity until you reach that point when your wide awake again... that or you've managed to somehow dismount safely and get your head down for a short while.

Wow Tristan, this was amazing to watch! To be able to capture and tell such a compelling story while truly inside the pain cave is remarkable. I only know ultra racing from a running point of view but I could really feel and empathise with your struggles when you felt you were at your physical and emotional limit. But how insane is it that when the tank appears empty we have so much more left to give. What a beautiful metaphor for life. Congratulations on your achievement🌟🌟🌟. Oh and it wouldn't be ultra racing without "Tom Dumoulin" knocking at the door. 😅

I suffered domestic violence 3yrs ago and it changed me mentally, I often want to ride dawn to dust in summer, but too anxious to do it. Too anxious to plan, maybe il take some time to plan something in our English summer and smash that anxiety barrier. Love your videos, look forward to the next batch... Once again massive congrats on your feat and quality vid... Jimmy

Thanks so much Jimmy. That sounds super difficult..hope you’re recovering okay from it. It’s worth giving something smaller a try, something that still pushes your boundaries a bit, but doesn’t bring up too much anxiety. I think it’s common to feel like we “need” to push our boundaries, but if it causes you more trouble than the joy you get as a reward, don’t. Set small targets and slowly you’ll improve. Thanks again though..really glad you enjoyed the video. 🙏🏼

Great content Tristan! Really enjoyed watching it! I am looking forward to ride badlands one day too. I am also totally fascinated of ultra racing cause it combines limits with adventure. One point i start to dislike about it is that... Many of these race wins are more or less about who can sleep the least not who can ride the race the fastest - what should actually be the point of a race. Not only it is dangerous to encourage racers (due to the rules) to ride without enough sleep, it also makes it super dangerous. So with these points combined i would suggest a break of 6 hours every rider has to do in between the race. Chosen by themselves when and where. In the end it would equal the chances for everyone and still there would be a fastest winner. But fastest in 'pure riding time'. Not in a overall time. In my opinion it wouldn't really take away the freedom spirit. As you would have to sleep outside anyway and could choose where to make the break. Anyways, cheers for the archievement! 🤝🏻

Awesome work, enjoyed reliving this crazy "race" 👏 We had quick chat along the way after 100k+ when it was pouring down. The climb after Almeria is the worst thing I have ever experienced on a bike 🤣

Haha that moment at km100 was one of my lowest, followed quickly by that climb..😂 Congrats for getting it done though mate!

Well done! Amazing result and achieving your goal, and the video was really really well made. The physical and emotional struggles really came through, but still it was beautiful and inspiring :) 11/10 points

Amazing, I was shocked by the end of your story but in a positive way. The fact that you managed to finish at 11th with all your issues and the last 50k hallucinations make me think about my military background Congratulations, you are an inspiration 👏👏

Tristan, great video. Very evident at the end how much that took out of you. You must have been half the person who started 47 hrs earlier. Well done. Do hope you manage to keep to the right side of the obsession line. Enjoy the "off" season. Congratulations on another excellent year on KZbin, cheers and all the very best, Don
