As a striker I never forget the first time i grappled. Couldnt believe it. Total exhaustion, less than a minute in. My ego was crushed.

The cardio/energy expenditure is different. Neither one will fully prepare you for the other. Me, whos dedicated years to grappling, done some mma years ago, but mostly grappling. Id be gassed in a few rounds of stand up. And i pride myself on my cardio on the mats. I can do 20 mins in a shark tank, easy. So dont be too hard yourself brother. Once you find your grappling pace, youd be a problem, guaranteed.

Really? I am as beginner as you get but I'm trying now at age 24 to learn martial arts, specifically grappling, and since a long time full disclosure I'm really really unfit but that's why I'm trying to change it. Anyway when I'm on the mats doing the absolute basics, I get gassed in 1 to 2 minutes. I'd never have expected another athlete (you as a striker) to get gassed in such a short time even during your first time grappling because you probably have built up a lot of general athleticism from your striking. I find your comment very interesting. I guess the type of cardiovascular fitness is different and very unique to something like jiu-jitsu.

This was 20 years ago and I was trying MMA. Straight to sparring. Defended a takedown, by actually manage to hip throw the grappler but then I got mauled when I followed him to the ground. (Reson i followed him to the ground was that I was already so fatigued from defending the takedown, standing up, I and I probably thought I could control him from up top and get a bit of a rest in. I dont know if it was exactly less than a minute. But pretty much. I managed to defend the submission until exhaustion set in and my limbs where just jelly. Reality check. @@Vyantri

@@sahilranjan4749 if you are not better a striker you don't have "superior" speed and athleticism. You get that with technique. Grappling is just slow. Grappling is like classical physics, striking is like quantum physics. Striking sparring if done honestly you know who is better. Also in grappling to your point it's much easier to get away with strength. You don't get away with strength in striking. UFC the past few years the top are all strikers. The grapplers prefer to strike. Not because grappling is harder. But in reality striking is what you need to beat a bigger opponent not grappling

@@kratowol6703 you sure royce gracie beat opponent who was way bigger than him in early ufc also grappling is about leverage a opponent who has zero knowledge of grappling i don't care ifhe is strong or whatever is going to get choked out now strength matters no doubt and UFC fighters are trained there are many striker like Roy jones jr prince nassem great Muhammad Ali who done things wrong but. Gets away with it now i love striking position in striking changes faster. Striking is more like mathematics than quantum physics angles and distance control are very important too lets say martial arts in general will make you humble and dude believe me grappling is fast its a misconception of people who think grappling is slow because they watch ufc like you said grappling is like Newtonian physics but it's definitely not slow not as fast as striking believe me I grapple i know and I have also done striking you can. Faras this is a weird tangent. I am a masters of social work student and a life long martial artist. I think all young people should be involved in martial arts if they can, but I also think they should pursue art, literature, math, science, and philosophy. These things are not mutually exclusive. Some of the dumbest people I have met are medical doctors, some of the smartest people I have met have no formal education. We have to be well rounded in this world, and not so narrow minded to think that wrestling will teach everything there is not know about life. Some of my most mentally ill friends I have met through martial arts, not in my "woke" anti racist classes in university (although much of them are also delusional). One would argue focusing on wrestling is out of touch with reality. Wouldn't you rather specialize in living off the land and becoming a firearms expert? Hell learn to shot a bow, throw an axe and survive off the land by yourself. That's more valuable to me than wrestling. My point is it doesnt have to be wrestling. I see that wrestling is definitely a tool to shape our youth/society, but i wouldn't put more value into grappling over tending to a farm and learning to hunt.

Agree to a certain extent. You can't really go around killing people for all types of crime though. There are levels to crimes committed and throwing an axe at someone for pushing you or stealing some of your pumpkins you were growing is a bit extreme. Martial arts will let you break that man's bones and let him go on his way.

@@jonathonsmith8871 I'm not saying you would be doing any of these things out of necessity. I don't train martial arts at a necessity. You put yourself through these trials to build character. To see what you're made of. I've trained martial arts for 20 years and never been in a street fight. Two situations that could have gotten physical I was able to just talk my way out of. I go camping, hunting and shoot firearms all the time. I learn just as much from those experiences as I have from martial arts. It's about overcoming adversity and building confidence. I build confidence in my ability to defend myself and my family. I learn how to provide for myself and my family in an austere environment. My point was that wrestling isn't this monolithic cornerstone of society. Character can be built in our youth through other activities.
