We raised and butchered our own chickens all my life. Mama and daddy both worked, so mama would tell me how many chickens she wanted butchered when I got home from school, I was good at and enjoyed putting meat in the freezer. Yall do a good job, other than giving the hearts, livers and especially the gizzards to the dogs, we always ate them. Good eating.

I don’t dislike them, I just like the other parts better and we still need to feed the dog.

Fascinating to see the process through to the bag. Would love to hear about the costs and selling price?

Here is a video from last year discussing the cost. We haven’t run the numbers for this year but I would assume close to the same. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJXRlpJ_fb-Dq6c

hi there tri star. i have a random question, have you thought about getting the Red broiler chicken? that one is a dual purpose meat bird, They tend to be larger than many breeds raised for meat, with males typically tipping the scales at around 6 to 7 pounds and females at 5 to 6 pounds in just 9 to 11 weeks. but they also lay eggs so if you do not slaughter them when the 9 - 11 weeks comes then you can still have them like egg layers. just a random question from me, have a great day!

We have and had actually ordered some red rangers for this year but cancelled and went back to cornish cross. I have never heard the 9-11 weeks and always heard/seen 12 weeks. Cost is the big reason why we do cornish cross. I can get them to 5-6 pounds dressed in 6-7 weeks which is a lot less feed than red rangers would need. We also have no need for more eggs so dual purpose is really not an interest to us. We can't sell/use the eggs we get now from our layers fast enough. Maybe someday we will try them but for now, the CC just work.

@@TriStarHomestead the 9 - 11 weeks is for the weight, right feed and so on then it takes 9 - 11 weeks for them to reach 5-6 (female) and 6-7 ( male) pounds, but the Red broiler chicken can get bigger like if you wait to 12-14 weeks then some of them can get up to 8-11 pound, so it is really up to the farmer when to slaughter them depending on their weight. but i think the cc is the best one money wise if you compare those 2 chickens.
