Changed my oil and filter today using your video as a guideline. All went well with the only difference being that I used an oil filter clamp that is made out of strapping . Have followed you for a while now but today I hit the subscribe button. Thank you very much and I will keep watching you here in New Zealand

Thanks for this exceptional video. I was able to do my first oil change with great results! Thank you for the tip about the O ring on the filter this could have been a costly error. I wasn't able to get Silkolene 10w-40 here in the US but the triumph dealer recommended Motul 10W-50. I also had a heck of a time trying to unscrew the filter that was on there. I guess they over tightened it to a point of being silly the last time I had the oil changed at the dealership. I was finally able to remove it with a filter removal tool from husky. My T120 black now purrs! Thank you again for sharing your valuable knowledge and experience!

Very well-produced video in terms of script and editing. Great info on the oil change; I'm considering a Triumph and I'll now be watching for that ring to detach on the filter during changes. Interesting info on Silkolene, too. Very helpful.

Just wanted to thank you for the tip about checking the rubber seal on the Triumph OEM oil filter when doing an oil change. I had the exact same issue as you when I changed my oil - this could have been a very costly error had I mounted the new filter with the old seal still in place. Thanks again!

I have seen this oil seal issue on many brands of filters, over the years, its caused by a lack of oil on the seal when the filter is installed, you will usually see this with the first filter change, as the factory does not oil the seals.

Thank you for this very helpful video Stuart. I’ve just changed filter on my T120 and had a devil of a job removing old filter fitted by my local Triumph dealer. My old filter tool wouldn’t go near it so went out to local Halfords and bought similar tool to one shown in your video, at three times Amazon price! Still no joy. Inserted a piece fine emery between tool and filter, still it slipped under the extreme force I was using. Next, removed centre stand to gain better access. This allowed good perpendicular purchase onto filter and finally, it started to move. The rest very straight forward with new filter fitted with traditional half turn tight after contact. So removal should be ok next year. Refitting spring to centre stand was very difficult and needed additional hand, which my wonderful wife provided! Moral, if your bike was last serviced by dealer, assume it was overtightened and buy specialist filter removal tool along with oil and filter before you start. If I could of bought one in time, I would of bought a cup type filter tool which would of avoided stand removal. One final observation; I made the mistake of draining the oil first and then trying to remove the filter. This rendered the bike unusable whilst I ran around trying to find ways of removing old filter. I even had visions of filling engine with new oil so I could ride it to Triumph dealer to have them change the filter! Tackle the filter first before draining oil, if you can’t get it off at first attempt, you can still use the bike!

O rings falling off is a common thing with oil filters. ran into it a bunch on cars. Worked on a charger once, checked the filter and saw the o ring was still on, then I put the next filter on... Interestingly enough, the o ring from two filters ago was also somehow stuck on the car, and miraculously did not cause the filter to spin off.. I was not as lucky and wound up with 5 litres of oil on the shop floor because i didn't check the actual mating surface for a second o-ring.

Thank you for sharing this video! My 2015 scrambler oil low pressure light started to flicker once the engine is hot, right after an oil and filter change. I went the cheap route and bought castrol part-synthetic 10w-40 instead of full synthetic. I took that for granted and decided to change the oil pressure sensor (since there was oil in the engine and the pump is moving it as it disappears from the window when i turn the engine on. So it should be the oil pressure switch). But no, the problem remains. I saw your video and got surprised with the lose seal in the filter, I cannot remember if it was there in the used filter so I will check that. Then put a new hi-flo filter and full synthetic oil and will comment later. Cheers from Mexico! 🇲🇽

Great video, thanks! In the 1970’s, I thought I’d do my mom a favor and change the oil in her car. Didn’t realize that the old filter gasket was stuck to the housing when I screwed the new one on. Started the car to check my work and was met with a tsunami of 10W40 when I went to look in the engine bay. Another 30 minute job turned into 4 hours.

Top Man ! Couldn't agree more about heating the oil up to help rinse out any particulates , and an oil trap IS !!! an oil trap. I did a shim change for my 2008 Bonneville back in April . on removal of the cam cover , in each corner and centre front and back of the cylinder head around the valve buckets , there are fairly significant shallow reservoirs in the casting and even after a little experimental rocking of the bike from side to side and pushing it backwards and forwards and yanking the front brake , the oil isn't leaving those traps , whether warm or not . Incidentally , have always used Silkolene engine oil on the Bonny too and their Titanium dry chain lube , I LIKE IT !

lol i remember when silkolene synthetic was first introduced, no one trusted it because is wasn't made from oil! it took a couple of years before they started making any headway! Its top stuff! have got some of their chain lube but not used it yet! and re oil traps well its just common sense isn't it! its unbelievable, the rumours and theories that circulate on the net eh!

Hey Stuart, another excellent informative video sir (really enjoyed Wed's offering too). It's these small practical changes that make ownership more personal. I don't want to pay silly money for a dealer to carry out a relatively easy job, and I feel afterwards I know my bike that bit better. Looking forward to the next in the series and thankyou again for another cracking vid.

The problem are the 2 first years, with warranty. If i get a problem with the bike and i have not used an official Triumph dealer for service, they could refuse to fix it under warranty.

No they cant!!!! that kind of behaviour by manufacturers has been outlawed here in the uk and probably elsewhere in Europe! just keep your receipts for the oil and filter and any other service items for use in the event of a dispute. for those in the UK and EU you do not really need to concern yourself much with the warranty it offers nothing that consumer legislation does not protect you from.

No they cant!!!!! legislation has banned that kind of behaviour by manufacturers! in the event of a dispute just make sure you have kept all your receipts for service consumables to prove you have carried the work out. Besides You don't need to even consider the warranty, EU and UK law protects the consumer for 6 years from the date of purchase!

Thanks as always. Firstly, when the oil is hot it drains more quickly, secondly, it's a good reason to go out and have a ride before an oil change and lastly, I'm just not going to leave my bike in the garage for a month without riding it, on principle! My T'Bird 900 uses an cartridge filter inside the engine and the dealer who first sold me one let slip that it was identical to a Kawasaki number one third the price! Oh and I've yet to experience emulsified oil, just doesn't seem to happen down here.

good video, btw..when filling the oil filter with oil, try to pour oil into the small holes that are near the edges you might fill it quiker. the oil actually passes from there first than it goes out through the centre hole.

Thank you sir i shall bear that in mind for the future though it was always my understanding that the fibres in the filter need to go through a "wetting process" as initially they resist the oil, and so allowing the oil to wet the fibres and soak through ensures that the filter is properly conditioned before fitting. though that advice me be wrong!

I should have watched this before changing my oil. I did the same thing when I removed the OEM filter, I saw there was something odd about it, and when screwing the new non OEM filter on it seemed to tighten to fast. However, before filling up with new oil, I remembered that I forgot to prime the filter and when I took it off, the old gasket fell out. So this must be pretty common with the OEM filter.

Had this filter seal issue on my T100 they missed it in the shop first service. I did the next change and getting the filter off was a nightmare ( rubber on rubber ). Had to buy a toothed cup socket and use a breaker bar to get it off. It was chewed to rat sh--t when I finally got it off. Thought about using the hammer and screwdriver, but the back of the filter is high in the sump and perfect for cracking it.

I work in a workshop and we always check that the sealing ring is on the old filter before fitting the replacement. It's not uncommon for the seal to remain in the filter housing. We've had this occur with Ducati's, Honda's, Triumph's, etc., etc. It's not a Triumph specific problem.

petrol( gasoline) is also a hydrocaron fuel ,therfore when mixed with oxygen for combustion water is one of the by- products of combustion ( along with carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and others) this water produced during combustion needs to be boiled and turned to steam thus leaving the exhaust ( hence the water exiting the exhaust when the engine is cold) Therefore if the engine is not at running temperature when it is switched off the water/ condensation will run down into the sump past the ring gaps thus emulsifying the oil.Short journeys and just starting the engine for a couple of minutes as mentioned in this video is not good practice.Great video thank you 👍👌

I’ve never come across this seal seperation problem before on any filter in 39 plus years of self maintenance on numerous bikes, mostly Jap stuff. I’ve always used OEM filters where possible but I’m now using Hi Flo on my 570 Husaberg. I’m currently waiting for local Triumph dealers to open so I can test ride a Street Scrambler, really fancying one as an addition to the garage. Not sure if the Scrambler uses the same filter as you’re T120 so I’ll certainly be checking that out if I buy one. Ask 10 different riders which oil they use/recommend and you could get 10 different answers. Oil and engine spec matching is of more importance. I’ve never stuck to one brand but just look round for the best deal on an oil that meets or exceeds the manufacturers specs and never had any oil related issues in nearly 40 years of riding. Bike manufacturers usually recommend a particular brand due to a sponsorship deal. One important part of an oil/filter change often overlooked, WEAR GLOVES!

Do you work for Silkolene 😉😎 Using a full synth oil in and engine with an integral 'wet' clutch will contaminated the friction plate making them more prone to slippery leading to clutch slip mainly when in the top power band or under heavy load, one might not notice the slip, however the steel clutch plates will over heat and buckle slightly and cause clutch drag ( heavy changes and difficulty in finding neutral ) in some machines. No so in old bikes like my '65 Triumph TR6 which need a heavier mineral based 20/50W for the engine, the clutch being separate uses 10W as is the gearbox 50W. For my 2015 650 V Strom I use semi synth 10/40 because of it integral clutch, with a change interval of 4,000 miles.. Not sure how Silkolene get away without clutch slip in their full synth...

No mr sceptical I dont work for silkolene! I think perhaps your a little behind with the times, most vehicle manufacturers including triumph design their engines to run on full synthetic, which is actually required due to the high temeratures modern lean burn engines run at.

Stuart Fillingham, the friction material is the same compound most manufacturers use, the multi discs friction plates used in a clutch works on the principle of light pressure over large area over which this spring pressure is utilised. Having been in the motor industry for over 55yrs in my small engineering shop we repaired and serviced Auto and manual transmission we know a thing or two about clutch slip and how differing oil affects these components at a vast range of temp. I have been riding competing and repairing Motorcycles for well over sixty years. I would like to think one know about oil and servicing motorcycles than the average man, anyone can remove a sump plug and oil canister or even strip a motorcycle engine. It's blue printing the beast back to factory setting where knowledge come in. Now what do you want to know?

@@stuartfillingham7011 well, the older engines had only air cooling, - today's engines hardly gets warm, with their water cooling compared to the earlier engines.. In my community, people with newer bikes perfectly runs mineral oils, and does a oil change about 4-5000miles.. Newer engines might have an 10-15000 mile interval..

I had a similar problem on a TD5 Discovery fuel filter (installed in rear wheelarch). Was doing a full service so changed the fuel filter at the same time. Checked it with the engine running - all was fine. Went down the road about 10-15 kms, all felt fine, except that the fuel gauge seemed to be faulty as it was showing a reducing level. Found a layby, jumped out the car and found fuel absolutely pissing out of the high-pressure filter assembly. Went home, whipped the fuel filter off and found the smaller centre rubber seal from the old filter still in place Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Lost about half a tank of fuel. How stupid did I feel ???

I think that sort of thing is easily done David! like i said in the video i knew there was something wrong but couldn't feel the rubber and didn't realise what had happened. at the end of the day the price manufacturers charge for these items, it should not happen! half a tank on a discovery OUCH!

Hi Stuart, good informative video as ever. The Triumph oil filter is £9.36 inc vat, so dont pay any more and is a branded item made for Triumph. The High Flow equivalent is HF 204, the K&N 204 was recently recalled due to a bad batch www.knfilters.com/recallkn204 This was due to oil leaking from the nut welded on the base of the filter to aid fitting. Rumours of cheaper Eastern manufacture abound! It is always preferable to check the old filter when removed for any faults but hindsight is a wonderful thing... Your comments on using a good oil is spot on! The difference in cost on an oil change between an average oil and a good one is about the price of an average takeaway, and thats just once a year on your pride & joy!

Hi Pyro, thanks for that, i just did a quick search on amazon and it came up at £13,99 for the Triumph filter, but i still wouldn't buy one even at that price you found. I was aware of the K&N filter problem but i don't use their oil filters so it didn't seem appropriate to mention it. and the HF204 can be had for just over £5.00! Thanks for your comment sir.

I've used both K&N and Hi-Flo both with nut on the end (at around £8) with no problems at all. I think i read somewhere that the two filters I mentioned are exactly the same and are made by the same manufacturer, but I'm not certain of that.

The statement you made about outside air being sucked back into the engine is absolute rubbish. It's simply pressure equalization that happens not air getting sucked back into the engine. When an engine is running the sump is under pressure as it should. Some of that sump pressure if it gets too high will escape through the breather pipe. Ones the engine is turned off and left for some time the high sump pressure in the engine will dissipate (escape) through the breather pipe until it's equal to the normal outside ambient pressure. No outside pressure will ever get sucked into the engine when stationary. Look at it this way when you let your tires down all the way you're letting high pressure inside the tire escape into the open air. Equalization. No outside air will ever get sucked back into the tire. The only thing that's happening is that the high pressure inside the tire is equalizing with the outside lower pressure. That's it!.. If the oil is milky white or froffy etc. It can only be caused by 2 things. If it's a water-cooled engine it will most likely be a head gasket. If you have an air-cooled engine you most likely running the wrong viscosity oil. Check your service book and it will tell what (W) Viscosity you should be running. Most times it will give you an option depending on how cold and hot your country's climate is. Just simply pick the right one.
