Hello and welcome to yet another very special vodcast of the podcast. Front End Chatter is delighted, nay positively tumescent, to bring all the details of Triumph's new, 2024 Daytona 660 - straight from the Hinckley's mouth, with BS carefully filtered out by the time it gets to you.
Simon and Martin pick over the details of Triumph's affordable, road-oriented sportsbike - including performance, engine and chassis spec, riding position details and comparisons, and of course price.
Please like, subscribe, leave a comment or questions down below (but please, try not to critique the actual video - we're not film-makers, we ride bikes and write (and talk) about them. Talk about the bike, what we've got wrong, your opinions of anything to do with bikes! And sorry about the angles, the quality, the lighting, the editing - but if we want Hollywood, we go to the cinema. Godzilla is still on, and it's ace.
Oh, and check out Front End Chatter, the podcast. It's ten years old and keeps on coming :-)

It will sell well . In the real world there is a huge group of bikers who are sick of the insane prices and pointless tech. Honda started the movement with the Hornet 750 ... people want good bikes at sensible prices that won't loose £5 K the moment they roll a wheel.

I had the 09 675 Striple and just loved it for over 5 years. The engine never disappointed me. The comfort level wasn't that great. I guess I just got old because I was in my late 50's. I did ride on some 4 to 5 hr. trips though and just loved passing everyone on the interstates. The rake and trail makes me wonder if this bike may be more susceptible to tank slapping. About like a shopping cart wobbly wheel. The sitting position on my ZX4RR makes me feel like I was on a cafe racer which makes me smile. I can almost forget what the bike looks like and imagine I was on my old bonnie cafe. Love it. Oh I just turned 70.

Great to see more FEC video content with a good balance of Mufga's brains and Simon's nostalgia. More please! The bike looks like a good alternative to Honda CBR 650 and Kawasaki's Ninja 650. It's quite pretty, even though it's built to a budget, though the brake master cylinder, steel side stand and gear lever cheapens it.

Great info on the rider triangle; very helpful. Here in the States, insurance rates helped kill the supersport bike sales. For me, I am not a fan of the naked bikes. Thank you Triumph for producing a bike with good all around ergos, an entertaining level of power, and decent brakes/suspension (fan of that fork) for a price that is reasonable. The insurance rates for a CBR650R are reasonable as well, so another win for the 660. My dealer already has my deposit for a white bike.

Good point, insurance should be much more affordable / accessible on a less-powerful, less-expensive, less-aggressive machine like this. Let us know how you get on with your Daytona 660!

At first I thought oh no a softer Daytona, however listening to 44T, TMF and this video I understand the market shift. As for the adjustable suspension comment. My 99 ZX-6R was fully adjustable, I tweaked it a little and it stayed there for 10 years apart from a 2 week tour of France with my GF on pillion. in 09 I bought a new Street Triple, un adjustable and it was perfect for touring or tear arsing around. In my view non adjustable is ok if it's made right.

Great vid. I'm late 40's & have owned several supersports bikes between 97 - 08 & very much done with them. I was looking at numerous nakeds but they didn't quite do it for me & then this soft road orientated sports bike resurgence happened & it made perfect sense. I don't want too much power, tech, discomfort or expense & don't plan on doing any track days so this sector ticked all the boxes for me. Current front runners for a purchase this year are this & the GSX8R.

I am in the market for my first bike after 30 years. The CBR650R is top the list at the moment. The ZX4RR is also a contender but twice as much to insure. This is an option. However right now the display is putting me off massively and the colour only does half the bike. So grey is the only one that looks complete. Boring grey through. But Triumph is a good brand. Decisions decisions. Loved the chat. Will check out the podcast.

Really good to see that this format works for you. Just as natural and well judged as the podcast. This bike reminds me of the 90s zzr600 but with less range and top speed. It will be more agile and modern feeling but I'm not sure it feels like 25yrs of progress. The class of bikes confuses me in general. 'sports 600s died out because they were too extreme, let's make non-extreme sports bikes for the road'... Neither fish nor fowl.

Perhaps it's a different kind of progress - not progress in the faster-lighter-harder sense, but progress in that it's a change to meet the different demands of a 2024 rider. It'll be interesting to see how well it sells.

As someone in their early 40s, I was just getting into bikes 20-25 years ago and lusted after the latest and greatest super sport machines, only to witness their category nose-dive before my very upset eyes. Now, I’m all for jumping back in and living my undying super sport fantasies, albeit, a little watered down which suites my slightly more sensible vintage. I’ll definitely test ride this at some point soon.

Driving a Trident 660 since 2021 i had the intention to buy a Tiger Sports 660 because of it's better comfort for longer drives. Despite its reduced fun to drive at corners, compared to the Trident. But now.... I can't wait to test drive the Daytona. Seems to combine Sports from the Trident and Comfort (e.g. windshield) from the Tiger. And the pricing is much better than it's named competitors.

I test rode a 2023 Street Triple 765, ended up getting a 2017 model. Just sold it for a 2009 Suzuki GSX-R600, because what I really wanted was a sports bike. Almost got a Daytona 675, but the condition was not good. All this in a span of 6 months since I started riding June last year. Although I was eagerly awaiting the new Daytona, I have to admit due to my expectations, I was disappointed. The discussion in this video is changing my opinion on it. The GSX-R is exhilarating to ride, but a more comfortable second bike would be nice. The new Daytona is on the short list. Just waiting for launch and price announcements in my country.

I'm a just past 70 years old and I'm very interested in this one.I am probably not the target customer but I own a few bikes and still do some racing. Currently have a Thruxton R, Kawasaki Z900RS SE, Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport, Tiger 900, Royal Enfield Classic Chrome 500 and Honda Monkey. I mentioned those because my interest is varied.I love the three cylinder engines from Triumph and was about to add the Tiger 660 Sport before I heard about this one. I tried the ergonomics on the 1200 Speed Triple RR but found it impossible for my knees and neck. My age consession isn't the bars but the distance between the peg and seat. My normal minimum is 19 inches but that can vary bu where the pegs are mounted fore and aft. On the Thruxton R I quite frequently use the rear pegs for relieve where traffic allows.

Nice bike, just wish they hadn't sullied the Daytona name by associating with a downgrade in performance. Surely they could've have found an alternative (either from Triumphs heritage else a new one) and preserve "Daytona" for a future project. "Trident SuperSport" is a name I've seen suggested by others. The price looks interesting, but then I would never buy new which would make a used proper Daytona or even STriple an even better value purchase.

Suzuki missed a trick here, they had this section boxed off for 20yrs with the SV650S. All the manufacturers are going out of their way to re-invent this section. All Suzuki had to do was get the engine through emmissions and with a few tweaks to the power, job done, and still a v-twin with all its character.

I remember the 650-4 you ran on long term, with yellow tyres. Hmm. Not sure why they didn't take off... Love the new Triumphs, but I do wander who the market is, or are they trying to create a new market? The biking demographic is much older now, and speaking for myself it's about how far, not how fast. And it's much less about the bike. At 60 I just want light, manageable tech free biking, that will carry me and her ladyship over any road for a month in the sun in Southern Europe. 100kph is my tourist speed.I'd sooner take a 400x scrambler. And i say that asca previous owner if a 955I. ( 2000) But, great chat. Just found FEC TV.. I'm hooked. Ride safe 👍

Thanks for watching! Triumph won't discuss whether there's a Daytona 660 R in the works or not, only saying the class is extremely price sensitive - the implication being that posher suspension & brakes on an R model could put the price up too high. Triumph is smart in trying to take market share from ducatis 950 supersport line, but.... ducati has the all the race/cornering abs gadgets and upgradeable suspension on the S model. This bike is cheaper but its honestly more in line with that bike than the xz6r really. great hp, geat torque and low revs easy to ride comfortable sports bikes. Not everyone wants a cruiser or adventure bike but still want the wind protection for longer rides that a sports bike can offer And I think the old crotch rocket crews from days past still want that style but not the back ache that comes with it. So far this and the ducati are the only one that seems to get with that program. The r7 just falls flat on power IMHO. and is still a bit wristy.

The supersport 600class started disappearing once the road traffic started increasing...these bikes were too wide to filter through traffic. Also, the cars got wider (think Suv boom) which made it even more harder....the bikers started using their grey matter more and chose naked 600s or sporty bikes. The hardcore track guys bought them used/pre owned which resulted in even lower sales. The manufacturers gave up once the euro4s kicked in...

Good summary - like this format! Seems like a obvious competitor for the CBR650, if it wants to compete with the RS660 (and steal some of its sales success) it’s going to need to go on a crash diet! I read that it weighs 200Kg+? It’s gonna need to be some track pack to lose 20Kg just to match the Aprilia’s road weight?
@frontendchatter
@frontendchatter 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Sorry we didn't mention weight - the Daytona 660 weighs a claimed 201kg, compared to 183kg for the Aprilia RS660. That said, the Aprilia is £10,300 in the UK, compared to £8595 for the Triumph - so it remains to be seen whether they're really showroom competitors given they're in very different price brackets.

@@frontendchatterthe aprilia 660 is more money for a good reason its gorgeous and on paper does everything this triumph doesn't.

I think it will probably beat RS660 in terms of reliability. Aprilia is amazing but forums are flooded with issues - oil leaking, engine coolant leaking, problems with quickshifter, paint easily chipping and many more. It's the worst thing ever for me when its summer and I can't ride because my bike is being repaired :/

@@frontendchatter it’s a fair point - but it seems to me Triumph might be wanting to have their cake and eat it? If you don’t want it compared to sports bikes, probably best to not name it after your most famous (recent) one?

Another lazy generalization. I have two Japanese bikes and an Aprilia. The Aprilia hasn't given me any more issues over the years than the Japanese bikes have. I read the Suzuki and Yamaha forums alongside the Aprilia forums and there are issues with ALL bikes.

What's the fuel tank capacity?

Ah, yes, good point, we did forget to cover that. It has a 14-litre fuel tank. Smaller than the CBR650R; larger than the R7; identical to the GSX-8R. Thanks for reminding us!

Loving things because they're British isn't nonsense. Telling people what they should think is though.

Should have called it the trident supersport. It's not worthy of the daytona name with that spec, in my opinion. It already looks outdated, and it's not even out 😂

No! the answer to your thumbnail. I think Triumph has made a massive marketing error in its name (though it wouldn't stop me buying it if I liked it) and to be honest its looks. And I suspect you both feel the same. At no point did either of you really look excited about this bike nor wax lyrically about its aesthetics, and that says it all. The way it's going for us (especially here in Wales (eg 20mph introduction)) fast, track orientated bikes are pointless, and all we'll be left with is the looks and 'feel' of motorcycling. Farings reduce 'the feel', great for commute, not so for blasting through Welsh lanes at the ever increasing 50mph zones.

I don't understand how Triumph can absolutely nail the industry at just the right time... the street triple, speed triple, bonnies, tigers, daytonas etc.. but.. recently they can't do the Daytona name justice. The 765 daytona was the biggest disappointment, hell, even the prototype looks better with scrappy race fairings... Is the 675 the best supersport racebike ever?#

Agree with a lot of your points but think the Speed 1200 had a difficult entry into the market, and the RR was definitely a misstep by Triumph. I know they did a lot of rectification work post launch under warranty through their dealer network on screens, electrics including fault codes and quick shifter, rear brakes too. So not everything in their garden is rosy.

@@S1000xrhp not faultless, but as far as being on trend they've nailed it. Even the new 400's, they're going to piss all over Royal Enfields etc
