Professor Bart D. Ehrman is interviewed by Host/Producer Mitch Jeserich on FM 94.1 KPFA on program called "Letters & Politics" on December 25th, 2018 at 10:00am. During this program, Mitch discusses with Bart about his book "The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World." We learn how Christianity spread throughout the Western world, and how the Roman Empire went from being a polytheistic pagan society, to a Christian society that persecuted non-Christians.
Program discussed on Bart Ehrman's Foundation Blog: ehrmanblog.org/...
Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came to UNC in 1988, after four years of teaching at Rutgers University. At UNC he has served as both the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.
Mitch Jeserich is a veteran broadcast journalist. He got his start as KPFA’s California State Political Reporter in Sacramento before going to Washington DC to cover the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court between 2003 and 2006. In 2009 Mitch launched a pilot program called Letters from Washington, chronicling the first 100 days of the Obama administration, that would become Letters & Politics.

Ppl have done things taking God's name in vain, and the Bible is one of it. The amount of politics by the ppl in power who got to decide which books made it into the Bible we have today. The word 'religion' didn't exist in the olden days, religion and state were one and the same. Dirty politics became modern Christianity.

FEB 2020 Dear Mr. EHRMAN: We hope you would answer this question. When you speak of the term "Christianity", do you refer to Catholics or Protestants? It is high time to always be specific when one talks about "Christianity". Catholic "Christianity" and Protestant "Christianity" have DIFFERENT belief systems and doctrines. The only common denominator between them is Jesus Christ. The commonality ends there. #waiting for your answer. thanks

Bart!! I have listened to a few of lectures in school and was happy to come across this new posting. Your commentary is quite compelling to say the least. I'm (messianic believer) conducting a (ethnographic) study on former Christians, for the sake of gathering their worldview and cultural perspectives. Since religion tends to shape and form the views of believers, my assignment is to learn how perspectives are held in the absence of religion. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? P.S. I welcome anyone who happens to read this comment and would like to participate.

I grew up Catholic and attended Catholic school. I am not in the Catholic or Christian churches now. I have been researching history and the Bible. There are some truths in the Bible. And also stuff you don't want to do. I also spent some time on Ancient Egyptian Book & texts. They were the most equal during Ancient times. They were also around for a long time and were very serious about eternal life. I think it may take a long time for Spirits to live again on earth. Not all do. You need to put your name into the story. Currently, I am focusing on the Jewish religion. You have to know the truth and remind yourself daily. You see people who discriminate based on gender and ethnicity. That is a sin I think. Hate blocks eternal life. Everyone is created equal and good, that is what we are meant to be. we also have the choice not to. we can change.

There were more than 2 sides in conflict during early christianity. There were multiple sects and they engaged in violence against each other regularly. Marcion was the one who began compiling the first bible which only consisted of the gospel of Luke and a few Pauline letters (edited to his own beliefs) which was the spark that caused the factions to come to several councils to put a bible together which was highly debated with several people exiled as heratics. Early christianity was violent. That the Roman faction finally won out is because of beating down of the other factions. Nothing supports that any of the religion bears anything true, religion was based on politics and violence only. That trend has continued.
@ianrwood21
@ianrwood21 5 жыл бұрын
A genuine question. What are your sources that very early Christianity was violent? I was under the impression that they largely worked by having verbal and written arguments. Only later did Christianity become violent towards unorthodox sects and non-Christians. However, I am perfectly willing to be corrected and would love to read a scholarly account of violence amongst very early Christians.

I challenge you to write a new "absolute truth" Bart, as I did.. I started as an Atheist, and ended as an Apologist.. here's my take: Despite historical inaccuracies, there is a fundamental archetype within us which is "known" today as the representation given in the gospels.. the letters are simply instructions on how to share and spread this knowledge..

could you perhaps offer a line or two regarding the conflict that appears to me in Matt 19:28 with Matt 28:19, were the disciples going to go out into the world and make disciples of all the nations, or were they going to be the 12 kings of the 12 tribes? and then in the former, there are 12 disciples but in the latter clause there are only 11 disciples... did Jesus not know that one of them was going to "not" be there by the end of the book, and if so, then what happened to the tribe that would have no king as Judas was gone? Thanks in advance for any help here......

It's also odd that more than half of Rome was still pagan at the time Theodosius made his edicts
@chrismaguire3667
@chrismaguire3667 5 жыл бұрын
Why should it be odd? Humans are desperately selfish and wicked at heart, and prefer to work in the dark. Christianity is being in the light but, as with any movement, can be used in an oppressive way. It has, at times in history, but the movement was controlled by ambitious men, though it never began that way. And to make Christianity 'inclusive', paganism was subsumed into it, and still does today. But it is not pure Christianity as Jesus and the Apostles taught it. Even in its later imperfectection, Christianity grew and changed the known world. Jesus taught about the wheat and tares, so post-early Church became, growing both because of its compromises with the world system. If Christianity was, from the start, the called-out people exlempars of the Gospel and the FULL counsel of G-d, not assumed, presumed-upon or second-guessed by mankind, this world would be still very different than it is today. Not, however, are all those who consider themselves as 'Christian', even churchgoers, are not. Paganism still exists, just look through KZbin, and it has infected the Church throughout its history, and still does. Christianity is having a personal relationship with G-d, who is neither a 'Christian' nor 'Jewish' God, though He chose a people through a NON-Jew, Abram a Chaldean who previously worshipped pagan gods, made Himself known and built a relationship with him because of grace. Those people became the Jews, the first exemplars of a different way of life, in the world, but not of it. Jesus came to reestablish that, through himself, and all for the asking. No price, for He was, and IS, the price, is necessary, nor proof of change before redemption, just talk to him, turn from your sinful state (repentence), accept him into your heart and then see the change begin! Simple as that, and that is what makes it different, successful and triumphant,because it starts with you. Now you know!

There is an eternal spirit and people can rise again spiritually. it isn't a physical rising from the dead. We were all born in the light and good. Heaven on earth. Most disconnect with beliefs and actions. We can reconnect. you have to do it while alive. Genesis chapter 1. All created in G*d's image and good (men and women). Both light and dark created. we chose the light or dark. basically, remember this. Pray positive every day, rising and shining (thinking and doing good.). Equality, love, and kindness. Believe you can rise and live again with your daily thoughts and actions. someone else can't save us just as someone else's actions can't condemn us.

The Romans and Greeks were very dynamic with gods. They were kinda 'God fluid'. They would equate Egyptian gods to their own. For example they would call Osiris 'Zeus' or 'Jupiter', and they would simply call Thor 'Ares' or 'Mars'. And you would find all kind of cults in the Roman Empire. Like the Isis, Christian and Mithraic cults. Religion was very different back then and there was no commandment of only praying to one god and intolerance of other gods.

Paul, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. First, I thank my God for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. The references to Jesus have been removed … leaving a (Greek) text that has exactly 1000 letters in it … that is neatly divided into 4 sections each of 51 words. In this text the word God is used 8 times. In each instance the first letter of the word God or its definite article when it has one, is an even number of letters from the beginning of the text. When these positions are added together and divided by 8 the first letter of the Greek word for "now" (the present moment) is identified …

If interested..All civilization came from The Armenians Highlands. What do other historians say...according to Anthropologist Mitchell S. Rothman regarding the extent of discoveries and specially on the quality of horse bones proved, According to him, that it was from the Shangavit Armenian 6000 years ago that the culture of that area spread around to the ancient world...Professor Jensen also says. ‘For almost everything that is known in the Hittite language is Old Armenian in form..Historian Sayce (1845-1933) also consider Hittite and Armenian to be one and the same’. and Rothman, quoted earlier, said...''All that was known in Mesopotamia came from Armenia and that Armenia is the absent fragment in the entire mosaic of the ancient world's civilization's construction.H.V. Hilprecht(1859-1925) a Clark research professor of Assyriology and scientific director Babylonian expedition at the University of Penn. argue that the Hittite tongue is Armenian and the Hittites themselves were of Armenian stock...according to Ellis (1861) through language analysis we observe that under the names of Phrygians, Thracians, Pelasgians and Etruscans spread westward from Armenia to Italy and Elis claimed that the closest affinities of the Aryan element are the Armenians ..other historians that agree are..Hellenthal, Busgy, Brand, Wilson, Myers and Falush...

Anyone with a little sense of History. Can know the corrupted lies when there is a different narrations on a particular subject/event within the Gospels or any other scripture. Different stories on a particual event makes it less reliable. Mark 12:29: Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD *our* God, the LORD is one.” Deuteronomy 6:4: Hear, O Israel: The LORD *our* God, the LORD is one! Quran 16:22: Your God is the One God. As for those who deny the Hereafter, their hearts refuse to admit the truth and they are arrogant. All Abrahamic religions believed in One God. And Regard corrupted Holy Scripture because of this non-sense: ‏Deuteronomy‬ ‭20:10-14: When you go near a city to fight against it, then proclaim an offer of peace to it. And it shall be that if they accept your offer of peace, and open to you, then all the people who are found in it shall be placed under tribute to you, and serve you. Now if the city will not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it. And when the LORD your God delivers it into your hands, you shall strike every male in it with the edge of the sword. But the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall plunder for yourself; and you shall eat the enemies’ plunder which the LORD your God gives you.” Deuteronomy 20:16: But of the cities of these peoples which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive,” ‭‭ Numbers 31:17: Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately.” ‏‭‭ The issue is not with killing but proclaiming an offer of treason and dishonesty! Prophet Muhammad married a Jewish Women. Ate from a Jewish made food. Posioned by a Jewish women. Didn't kill the Jewish women that poisoned him. Prophecised: Genesis 21:21: While he [Ishmael] was living in the Desert of Paran [Arabia] , his mother [Hagar] got a wife for him from Egypt. Genesis 25:13: These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, *Kedar* , Adbeel, Mibsam, Isaiah 42:11: Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where *Kedar* lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops. Psalms 84:4-6: Those who live in your house are truly happy; they praise you constantly. Selah Those who put their strength in you are truly happy; pilgrimage is in their hearts. As they pass through the *Baca* Valley, they make it a spring of water. Yes, the early rain covers it with blessings.” Quran 3:96: The first House [of worship] to be established for people was the one at *Baca* . It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for all people. References of Scriptures means reallity. Personal explanation is not a reflection of reallity. There is many other verses in OT, NT and Quran with biography in each of them that supports God existence as well the reallity of Islam. Be impartial, unbiased, honest researcher for the truth.

Remember jonh Lennon who was also a famous singers and stand against the Christian horrifically led down his life in Hell fire. This man too criticized the Gospel after being a Christian for Years. it is very dangerous to become a theologian without experiencing the assurance of Salvation. As a result this learned man like the teaching of Islam. the Bible said a person can't comprehend the things of God, without the spirit from God.

My latest finding about christianity 2 John 1:7 - I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist." This is Paul, or a Paul, saying believe in my idea of Jesus Christ, and not others, who are those others? James the Just for one, and look at this quote I finally got around to confirming! Chapter XXXV. Beware of False Prophets. Then after three months were fulfilled, he ordered me to fast for several days, and then brought me to the fountains that are near to the sea, and baptized me as in ever-flowing water. Thus, therefore, when our brethren rejoiced at my God-gifted regeneration, not many days after he turned to the elders in presence of all the church, and charged them, saying: Our Lord and Prophet, who has sent us, declared to us that the wicked one, having disputed with Him forty days, and having prevailed nothing against Him, promised that he would send apostles from amongst his subjects, to deceive. Wherefore, above all, remember to shun apostle or teacher or prophet who does not first accurately compare his preaching with that of James, who was called the brother of my Lord, and to whom was entrusted to administer the church of the Hebrews in Jerusalem, PsuedoClementine Homolies - by a Clement 1 - Who is the writer of this? It's the first pope of the Christianity - in Rome. Pope Clement 1. But, who is Pope Clement 1? Looking at this Clementine literature wiki, @t It's Titus Flavius Clemens, son of Titus, who was the son of Vespasian - the Father/Son duo, who has their path to the Roman Imperial throne by Philo of Alexandria's money, and who sacked Jerusalem in 70 A.D! - @t

I was a "doubting Thomas", until I died and went to Heaven, and went before the Judgment Throne of God. I practiced Buddhism and the Eastern philosophies and occultism most of my life before. Now since reading the Holy Scriptures I see who Jesus is and why He died for us. He is our Redeemer, Healer, Intercessor, Defender, Mediator, Advocate...When you die you will literally stand in a giant courtroom in Heaven (looks kind of like a gigantic roman ampitheatre), and you better have Jesus by your side, He is like our attorney in Heaven, but He is also a part of God with the Holy Spirit (Trinity). The Holy Scriptures are the Word of God. I fear for anyone who does not believe, you will appear literally covered in filthy rags with the sin of the world when you stand before the Throne of the Most High Holy God. He cannot see you as clean and Holy without the covering of the Blood of Jesus. I pray for you to all believe! I believe because I've seen, more blessed are those who believe without seeing.

Arabic and Aramiac are Twins 👯 Eid/Eed in both languages means Celebration 🎊 Rooh Alqudus = Holy Spirit in both languages Aab = Father in both languages Talameeth = Disciples in both languages Allah = God in both languages Jahannam = Hell in both languages Jannat Eden = Garden of Eden in both languages Quran is Mercy. Allah mentioned people worshipped Ezra and Jesus are Sons of God! Do NOT worship your desires. It is a bad path. Nobody enters heaven with an atom of arrogance. Lucifer refused God out of arrogance. Pharaoh too refused God. Arrogance is Bad for your health and your Future/Hereafter.

The rennisance had absolutely nothing to do with Christianity😄😄😄.Neither did western philosophy such as platonism,stoicism etc.Also there is no evidence Constantine 1 ever converted aside from Christian propaganda.

The 95 Theses led to the Reformation, a break with the Roman Catholic Church that previously claimed hegemony in Western Europe. Humanism and the Renaissance therefore played a direct role in sparking the Reformation, as well as in many other contemporaneous religious debates! Sooo? Where do you get your info?

@@tjworker5482 sorry but your wrong.The Rennisance was sparked by old Greco Roman cultures as we can see in so many paintings,statutes etc of the old Gods.EvenGemistus Pletho a secular but extremely well respected philosopher in the late Byzantine Empire who advocated for a return to Hellenism,Hellenic ideals etc.He also was a chief pioneer of the revival of Greek scholarship in Western Europe and he had a prominent school at Mystras,Greece where his students worshipped the old Gods.He died in 1452 about 152 year's after the Rennisance had been established.
