As always an entertaining and thought provoking review of the machine that in my opinion is the most attractive "scrambler" from an aesthetic perspective in current production, and indeed as you point out, arguably the most "true to genera" in terms of the basic historical concept of a basic "scrambler" in the Triumph range (massive bonus is that you don't look too bloody big for it so the rest of us taller chaps are going to be OK) Seriously though, the 900 Scrambler is in my humble opinion, right up there with the 1st edition Speed Twin as being one of the most beautiful machines the Bloor Triumph backed company have ever produced. It frustrates me considerably that Triumph didn't decide to give it a bit more suspension travel as in about 180 mm up front (FGS with conventional forks PLEASE) and alloy rims as per the 1200 series.I firmly believe Triumph made an error of judgement here. If you look at the massive upgrade in suspension, brakes and spec on the 1200 series scramblers for actually, not such a massive difference in price, and then think about deleting the totally unnecessary "keyless" function, an ugly computer instead of T100 analogue clocks, twin Brembo 50's (really on a scrambler?) and ugly USD forks, err... well actually, the 900 could have been the best scrambler Triumph produced. I genuinely think they should have only produced a premium 900 and the 1200 XE. Check the registration sales data and you will see my point.

With the 400x being almost half the price, I would imagine it will take a lot of customers away from the 900, plus with the 400 being lighter it would make more sense for occasional off road use. Again with the average age of motorcyclists getting older then lighter is probably becoming more popular.

I’ve put 35,000 miles on mine in 2 years, serviced regularly with no problems. It’s beautiful (mine is red), but also, it’s a workhorse….has never let me down when touring. Draws a lot of attention, I’m always approached at gas stations, etc. Agree about the analog display, it fits the old school style, as does the headlamp. Just an incredibly fun motorcycle to ride and own.

The look and the FEEL of these classic retro styled bikes is what's making them so popular IMO. As a refugee from years of Japanese Superbike ownership, GSXR's, R1,s, Fireblades etc, I don't even give such bikes a second look these days. I still own a big bore Kawasaki but my Triumph twin is my go to bike for 90% of my riding.👍😀

When it came time to buy a scrambler, I chose the Duc and have loved it for 3 years. However now that I ended up with a 3rd bike, its time to sell the Duc, and I've got to say, it hasn't been easy (here in the USA). If I had gone with the Triumph, I bet it would be sold by now.

I have a 2022 Street Scrambler and love it to bits but my perfect bike would be a 1200cc version, NOT the oversized and ugly 1200XE. The new 1200X is about as close to that in both looks and riding position as you're going to get straight off the showroom floor so I intend to test ride one. My SS (and potentially 1200X) is purely for road miles and for that it's superb. I have done a couple of very tame green lanes on it but, as an enduro bike owner I just can't envisage wrestling any of the Triumph Scramblers off road. Has the SS 900 still got a place in the range! ABSOLUTELY 100%👍😀

Absolutely love my scrambler 900 - just completed 10,000 miles. The suspension is deeply disappointing as with so many triumph models but the rest of the bike is a delight, particularly the engine - no need to rev, loads of power from very low revs and the 270 crank not only makes a great sound but helps deliver the power in a delightful way. I'm going to try the new 1200X but I very much doubt it will be such a well balanced package as the 900. I have learned my lesson over the years - more is not always better.

Thanks for the video! Great stuff. I gotta say for the last 8 or so years I've always considered this Scrambler the most timeless and kind of essential Bonneville. Obviously the t100 is the core bike but it changes every once and then. I just think the scrambler 900 is the most perfectly proportioned (visually) bike and sits in the Goldilocks zone as far as power and size. It also had the classic but cool aesthetic that anyone looking for a classic kind of bike would appreciate. More so the the t100 for me personally. Haven't ridden it myself but it has been on my short list since 2017 and I think that says a lot. Other bikes have gained and lost my interest over the years but this is just so close to a perfect version of what it's trying to be, that it's always going to garner interest and will always be desired. I think it will absolutely be a future classic once the 900cc engine is retired.

Saw it before I became a motorcyclist. I've got a Harley Lowrider St as my daily rider right now, but good lord I still want to own one of these Scrambler 900s. Taking into account that the first watercooled Scrambler 900 was just a customization package for the Street Twin, this motorbike is exactly what the Old Man described as a Scrambler: A slightly modified Street bike. That was my previous bike. A brilliant all-rounder and heaps of fun! The engine, as you say, is just superb - grunt everywhere within legal limits. I added the Fox rear shocks and put more road focused tyres on as I found the original tyres very vague in fast corners. I know it's not a sports bike but it's very capable in the twisties with the right set-up. It's the nearest you'll get to looking like Steve McQueen.

couldn't agree more. That 900 engine is an absolute blast in all its platforms. Big enough to get a bigger guy or gal around and small enough that you can ring its neck and really feel what it has to offer in full. I ride a 2015 Triumph America LT, air cooled, which is an absolute blast as it has the 865, air cooled and possibly better than their liquid cooled, and I have yet to find a fault with that bike over the years I've owned it.

The difference between the 900 and the 400 is easy to see in the flesh, one is built up to a quality and one is built down to a price especially the suspension and the brakes. The 900 is the sweet spot but a bit pricey the 400 is for those who can't afford the 900.

This is a very good bike, that is for sure: Perfect engine, high quality components, high quality finish, aesthetic design... The only thing that bothers me with this bike is the limited suspension travel. A bike claiming to have off road capacity should have at least 17-18 centimeters of suspension travel. Front and rear wheel travels of this bike is only 12 centimeters, same with street twin version.

Scrambler 900 got more retro vibes and styling, as you mentioned good for roads and some back country roads. I hope 'Triumph' makes the scrambler 900 'X' version too in future. Why I say this is that I got the scrambler 400X which has bigger handlebars in width, more suspension travel and bigger 43mm forks, front and back and more clearance for the seat height. It would be a nice upgrade in future to scrambler 900X (if ever get launched) or I have to keep my eye on the scrambler 1200X (once it gets launched in India), as it's seat height is much more approachable than those XC/XE, which can feel and give a good amount of confidence when going off road doing some trails.

I think in terms of how they feel, the 900s are actually a better retro than the 1200s. The engine sounds nicer, and the wider spacing of the 5spd transmission fits the character of the bike better. My only complaint is that the price difference between the 900s and 1200s isn't enough to easily justify buying the smaller bike.

I owned a 2019 one as my first ever big bike after passing my test and really miss the sound of that engine. Had to change as the missus loves riding pillion, but the scrambler with that pin cushion seat didn't go down well. Now have the Tiger Sport 660 which is far better for 2 up, but still miss the sound of that 270 degree crank!

It does sound fantastic straight out of the crate. Even better when de-catted.

So you probably don't want to know about Triumph's own bench seat option then?

Love the bike but so wish triumph would put tubeless wheels on the bike. Same with the Bonneville range. Makes touring on these bikes a problem if you get a puncture and not fixable roadside really like tubeless.

When I can ride 400X at 100Kmph with ease, I don’t need the big brothers, especially in India where 400X is made (& costs just around 4K USD) and the big brothers are imported with a heavy import duty (& cost an arm and a leg) !!

If they cost you an arm and a leg, you wouldn't be able to ride them.

NIce review! Thanks. Is there a shot of you on the 400x? I was surprised that it has launched with a higher seat height which I assume would fit you better? We're similar sizes so would love to hear your view of the 400x (and compared to the Bear 650). Cheers!

It looks great, but if I were to get a scrambler it'd have to perform offroad, for which this is too heavy. That exhaust does make a fantastic noise though, so that alone might make it worth getting over the speed twin 900. But for offroading I'd look at a Fantic Cabellero 500, looks fantastic, and weighs only 150kg. Not even the new Scrambler 400X can match that.

A Scrambler is meant to be light, and easy to ride off-road; even if most people won't do that. So for that reason, I'd go for the 400X....... I wonder if Triumph will try to capitalise on their new off-road racing Factory racing programmes. The MX has been announced, but the Enduro news seems to have gone quiet; possibly as Enduro is dominated by 2 strokes......

I love love love mine ..It is black like the one you rode .I have one that was a good priced left over from 2017 I got in 2018 so a little lower HP (slightly better MPG ? ) I added tiger dirt foot pegs and heated grips oh yes and a center stand ..I also made a wooden pannier that looks a lot like a WW2 ammo box for carying my rain suit and winter gear . ( In the summer it carries my banjo :) At 15 K miles I have gone through two chains and one sprocket . two and a half sets of tires ...I ride on farm lanes dirt roads and some long distence motorway work and all the way through the winter ..Also the bike has lived under a bag on a concrete slab through the New English snowy winters ... I wish for a slightly larger gas tank (the range is just under 170 miles ) but it is fine on low test gas .I do wish the suspention was a lttle better . It is a comfortable easy bike to take care of ..The higher exhaust means easy acssece to the chain tighteners .I have had many chances to trade this bike in but it is as close as I can find to the the perfect bike for my riding style and roads I ride ... PS I have a 30 inch inseam so the seat hieght is perfect for the crazy places I take her ...

Assuming it's a bit smaller and lighter than the 1200s, it will suit some better and having more umph than a 400, it absolutely still has it's place. Great looking and sounding all rounder.

I love my Street Scrambler, does everything I need it to, enough low down torque for the mainly mountain roads I ride in our area. Have done many 8-10 hour ride outs on it, not motorway but B roads, and it does the job admirably. The seat height on my 900 is 790mm and the new 400X it is 835mm - that is a considerable difference, probably too high for me as I'm 5'6"... so they may be aiming at the 'beginner' market (I hate calling it that) but they could already be losing some sales on that point and peeps may have to take the 400 Speed Twin. Maybe there's a lower seat option for the 400X though... I will test the new 400X out of curiosity when it shows up though.

I haven’t ride the 400, but I expect it to be very different compared to the 900. Probably the 400 needs to be rev higher to get some juice out of it. The 900 is very torque down low, which to my opinion is better... especially for older dudes 😉
