I have been a rider for a little over 50 years. I’ve had many motorcycles from 25 hp to 160 hp. I’m 65 years old and just bought my most recent bike a KLR 650. My best friend also 64 just ordered his Speed 400. Waiting patiently here in Canada for its arrival. Ok so I find this bike perfect. My first road bike was a Honda CB400 F super sport. Still my favourite as it was the bike I really made incredible memories. I know that there is no replacement for displacement however at 65 and doing way less touring, my bike has to just be fun to ride. I had bought the KLR based on the road conditions I ride in. Rural. The bike is tall. Not a big problem. BUT had I been more aware of Triumphs 400 Speed prior to purchasing my KLR , I probably would have bought the 400. The 400 produces virtually the same power as a 650 KLR. But is a much more manageable ride for general use. I like it a lot. Very impressive.

The KLR is a way better bike, spec numbers are peak numbers, and surely not everything.

@@leeinwis torque is the key. KLR has bigger torque number. Heavier bike tho. I love the KLR. Not my usual ride. At 65 years old I’ve gone through 40+ bikes. My favourite type of bike is a Vstrom 1050 or a sport tourer (St1300,Concours14) both of which I used to own. Put hundreds of thousands of miles in my day. Now I just love to putt around day rides in rural country where I live. No longer feel the urge to go on multi week adventures. lol

Many years ago, when learners could ride up to 250cc, the next step up to a 350cc seemed a waste of time, when a 500cc or 650cc was much more inviting. Now, as learners are restricted to 125cc, this bike is a good step up. Modern 400cc bikes are a long way ahead of Tiger 90 or 350 jampot.

My wife is 5 foot 3 1/2 inches and she also makes sure she mentions the 1/2 inch in her height ! - The Speed 400 looks like a generally good bike, but that front mudguard issue is a bit annoying, you'd have thought Triumph would have spotted that it is too short to protect the radiator at the rear (and I'm sure they did.. another opportunity for an 'optional extra' maybe ?..) I think manufacturers do tend to assume that their bikes are fair-weather 'toys' rather than practical everyday transport, but given the Speed 400's price and characteristics I think a lot of people will buy one as a 'daily-rider' and use it for commuting to work in all weathers, making the mudguard issue a real-world problem..

My Street twin 900 front mudguard spoils the bike for me, even with a fender extender it's totally inadequate and really annoys me!

Same with my 660. The rear mudguard...... rear...thing doesn't protect the monoshock or the back of my jacket. I commute and the bike is filthy after a couple of days. (Really worried about the monoshock).

My first bike, I'm 1m72, it's perfect for my size and as you mention in the video, while I don't have much points of comparison (rode a 125cc scooter for a year before), it has everything needed to get going without making you feel like you're about to yank yourself into the landscape at the first tight corner. Now if only the weather and temperatures could rise again... For first timers, be aware that there are pretty long delays on most accessories, in particular crash guards and the likes. My bike sat at the dealership for 6 weeks before these arrived (and I only got them because the dealer was bitching at Triumph on the phone every second day - I was their first Speed 400 buyer).

Im 5 foot 4 inches so I am limited to the bikes I can ride currently I have a triumph trident 660. I rely on just having one foot down when I come to a stop. Also make sure I'm in first gear at stop as well. I can't scoot the bike backwards I need to get off it to move the bike into a car space. Makes me look like a woose but better than dropping it. I'm glad that triumph have thought about people who are vertically challenged.

After just three months of owning my Triumph Speed 400, I’ve already encountered an oil leak and a completely worn-out front fork oil seal. This has been both surprising and disappointing, especially given the bike's reputation and the care I’ve put into maintaining it. Additionally, there’s a noticeable vibration at speeds above 80 km/h, which only adds to the frustration. For anyone considering this bike, I’d advise careful thought-it's not delivering the value for money I expected

I really like the looks, sound, and relative simplicity of this Triumph. The only negative thing I've read is that it's a shaker, with vibration through the pegs and seat starting at around 60mph. That could be an issue, or not, depending on where and how you intend to use it. My first bike was a Honda CB350 which, on long highway rides, would put my legs to sleep from the high-frequency vibes; I'd come to a stop, put my foot out, and... down I'd go! 'Never happened with my bigger Bonneville.

Those Captain Scarlet boots though. I grew up with back roads like that in Scotland and the Lakes, alas over here in the ‘States that kind of road is usually loose gravel, or has gravel/sand strewn across every corner, kinda discouraging ‘spirited’ riding.

It’s hard to find a bike that’s this low and I didn’t think it was too heavy at all. Felt very light and almost like a toy bike. My friend is 5 foot 2 and this is one of the only bikes that suits her unless she goes for a cruiser bike which she doesn’t want. I’ve test ridden it and think it’s a great bike for a beginner or someone smaller. The only things I’d do is gear it taller by changing the sprocket and put a windscreen on it.

It would be better if it had some decent mudguards, look at a the crap it throws into the radiator, some people think it’s sexy to have minimal mudguards, but it’ll be a nightmare to keep clean. And the Seat height is too high for me. It’s a no from me.👎

Mine would not start the first day that i got it. Got it to the shop and they i guess fixed it and now it is doing it all over again and it is back in the shop again. I made a video of what it is doing on my channel. I would turn the key to start and and got nothing, i would then turn it off and turn it back on and it would fire right up.
