Is the Triumph Speedmaster the best cruiser motorcycle in the world? I have owned my Triumph Speedmaster for one year now and have put 15,000 miles on her. It is not the most powerful or the biggest cruiser on the market, but it sure is beautiful.
Triumph Speedmaster vs Harley Davidson and the larger cruisers maybe down on the numbers but it is in my opinion one of the best cruiser motorcycles money can buy. The classic Harley Davidson cruiser bikes are brilliant and are definitely better in certain areas, and the BMW R18 is a great looking motorcycle. Can the humble Speedmaster beat these larger cruisers?

I’m sadly at the end of a trip to my old buddy, Simon, in Massachusetts. He generous loaned me his Speedmaster for a road trip to Vermont covering 650 miles in three days. He was riding a 900 Tiger and the third member, Mark, a Suzuki Boulevard cruiser. The Speedmaster has had modest remapping to improve low end fuelling and a Corbin seat to suit his needs. Simon is much taller than me so for him it’s an armchair on wheels. For me with 30” inside leg the seat was a little high for my shorter legs and the bars a bit too far forward for my lesser reach. Neither massively detracted from a fabulous three days’ riding along a range of roads including freeway, backroads, gravel (yes, really), poor surfaces, twisty hill roads. The Speedmaster had no issue keeping up or maintaining speed through corners with very predictable handling and a flickability that belies it’s 265kg. I have a T3 Cali and it’s reminiscent of it’s handling. The engine, however, has way more grunt from tick over and will settle into an easy top gear lope. Acceleration is very impressive and gear changes easy and precise. For the riding we did, this was a great bike. It has a tank capacity of just 12 litres so I expected a small range. Not so. Simon averaged 58 mpg for his 7,000 miles. Zeroed off, my three day average was 68.5 mpg. This, however is US gallons. In UK gallons a staggering 82 mpg. On the last day it rose to a whopping 87 mpg. This was a not a dawdle by any means. I remain stunned that 12 litres could provide well over 200 miles. To shove 265 kg plus me around and return that economy is incredible and put the other bikes to shame yet doing no more. My ATAS DCT a case in point. As a final point, the 270 crank that is almost the norm on parallel twins is, to me, form over function. The suggestion of more torque is nonsense. It adds v-twin sound which is nice but makes the power pulses uneven and causes vibration under load that, for example, BMW flat twins don’t have. Bring back the 360 parallel twin! That said, a great bike and fun ride. Try one! Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian, thanks for the update from your trip 👍 That is all great stuff to hear, so good to hear all of that positive feedback on the Speedmaster. Having toured through the Alpes and Pyrenees mountains I agree with everything you said. Haha same I have taken it on a few gravel roads, when I got lost. It handled it very well and I never had one thing go wrong. One of the stand out features to me is the handling, for a cruiser it is surprising fun through the corners. I think I need to get my bike re-mapped as I average around 58mpg! I must try a 360 parallel to feel the difference. Cheers for the update and great to hear that you had a good trip. It is making me want to pack up the bike and head off for a few days 😁

Had my 2023 Speedmaster Chrome edition. I've added highway pegs as you have. I'm just under 6 ft and 180lbs and find the manueverability exceptional. The torque gets you out of any trouble, especially in city traffic. The Harley's et. al. are clumsy by comparision. I'll give the Harley an edge at cruising speeds in excess of 80mph but under 80mph I love the stability and feeling of control that Triump gives you. Simply love this bike. At 81 years of age, the ergonomics is keeping me on the road.

It’s the best cruiser in the world in my book. I had the 2003 carbonated version in yellow and black and the rake was too far out, not for me at all even though I loved the low seat height and Cadillac soft rear shocks (it would bottom out over holes but I didn’t care), but the 2022 with the upgraded gearing giving it more power standard, long time before shifts, comfort seat standard, it’s great. I hope the 2023s have the Michelin Road tires standard and I’d love for the Speedy to be tubeless. It’ll be my next addition, I recently sold my Harley for a 2022 T120 and love it. We’ll see what the next few years bring. Keep loving the shout outs for mental health, motorbiking does wonders for it.

I think Triumph have gotten back to producing some beautiful looking bikes after going through a bit of a "meh" period, putting all their design efforts into adventure bikes. I still haven't figured those out yet. I am yet to see one that looks as if it's just come back from some off-roading. The new model Speedmasters are now looking like they have regained some of the character of the old days, you know, where the "R" and the "H" were joined together, and when you had to twiddle the carbs before finding tdc, (and freeing up the clutch beforehand) and then kicking it over. *Sigh*..... Those were the days. I can still hear my late Dad telling me I got more oil on the garage floor... But yes, you have to go a long way to find a cruiser with the Triumph's looks. From the nicely rounded tank to the lines of her swing-arm, to the gorgeous graphics and gorgeous rear profile, what isn't there to like. I was looking for a good place to store my mandatory hunk of wood for whacking the Amals when they stuck open, when the nice man at Hamilton Motorcycles told me that they aren't real... The hardest part of getting back on a Triumph has been changing gear with my left foot. Anyway, I'm off to investigate why BMW's are now rated R18.

Thank you very much for your reviews! I had an idea of buying BMW r18 but I watched your videos on r18 and Speedmaster and I thought: Triump is lighter, more nimble, more manageable and cheaper! The only thing that is better with r18 is… coolness of having such big and luxury bike (and maybe really long distance ride, that I never do). But what disturbs me is your insistence that Speedmaster is for smaller people (I’m 6 feet) 🤔

Hi, thanks so much really pleased you liked the review 👍 Yes that is exactly it, if you are not looking for the biggest and most expensive, then the Speedmaster is a great option compared to the R18. Especially if you are not going on longer rides. I think at 6ft you would be ok, anything above that then you may want to consider something else. However if you are not going on longer rides then I think you will be fine on the Speedmaster 👍

I love that both the Speedmaster and Thunderbird LT give the owner several bikes in one. One day you can have the windshield and saddle bags 💼 configured as touring bikes. Nice review Angus. Good way to trigger all the yanks by saying it's better than a Harley. The BMW R18 would just be so impractical on small bumpy pot holed British roads. I've still not bought a Speedmaster! 4 bikes already makes for not a lot of space in the garage. I have to decide which one to sacrifice for a Speedmaster. In a cruiser beauty contest the Speedmaster would definitely win. Small and perfectly formed. The only downsides for me is that Triumph didn't give it the same grunt as their Speed Twin or Thruxton RS which is at least 100bhp and similar torque. The engine can easily provide this. I found above 70-75mph on fast dual carriageways where you can open it up, the Speedmaster does get a bit ragged, quite a view serious vibes. It's best in the 40-65mph range which corresponds to twisty UK B roads. Yes I guess the tank could be a little larger say 17 litres but it would not be something that would put me off buying one. In fact with fuel prices the way they currently are, it would be an even bigger shock when filling up with a larger tank when coming to pay! I filled up my Sprint ST1050 a couple of days ago and it cost £31.80!! Admittedly it as was E5 99 octane fuel which was about 9p/litre more expensive than std E10 95 octane unleaded but you get better performance and higher mpg. Still a shock as even last year it was still only around £19-20 to fill it up. Those foot rests look like a really great addition as do all the other accessories you've added. The only other thing which was personal to when I rode one for a few hours on a test ride last summer was that the seat although comfortable is positioned so it pushes you back. Looking at it side on I can see why as it slopes back. When I was riding it I felt like I had to constantly sit up as the shape and angle made me sit back and slouch and cause pain in my lower back. So had to keep consciously remembering to sit up fighting against the seat which was allowing me to slouch. I would look at raising the rear mounts of the seat a couple of inches if this is at all possible, to make it more flat? The Speedmaster is still a drop dead gorgeous bike. For the next gen Triumph must give it more power at least 100bhp, a larger tank and a far better pillion seat and mech better double brushed aluminium or chrome clocks just like their Thruxton R. I am not so keen on the single black rather plasticy looking clock. What was the name of the castle?
@redangrevival
@redangrevival 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex, Glad you liked the review. Haha yes I think it will prick up a few ears on the other side of the pond! I am looking into replacing the cam shaft to the same as in the Thruxton RS, think this will really free up the engine and give it that higher up performance. I only find it hurts my lower back when I have my camera bag on for too long! But this is the bags fault. I must get a new bag haha I 100% agree for the next gen they should have the chrome clocks rather than black plastic ones! It would compliment the bike so much. Not too sure! But it is the entrance to an estate called Orchardleigh in Somerset. Beautiful place. Cheers

I’ve added a £15 touring screen top extension for long distance and buffeting is so much better. Usually I just ride without the screen and it’s so simple to fit/remove as you like. Yes the T120 is great and would actually argue possibly more comfortable than the Speedmaster (individual build depending). @redangrevival I’m torn between these two as well. The T120 is a little high, not quite tippy-toes, but the balls of my feet - not totally flat footed so there’s that slightly awkward feeling. If I shift my weight to one side or the other, it’s fine. But I do like the better lean angle as I’ve read many complaints that the Speedmaster scrapes the pegs a lot. For reference, I’m 5’6” with a 30” inseam. Do you feel the height difference would make a significant difference ; and how has been your experience with pegs scraping? Love your videos btw.
@redangrevival
@redangrevival Жыл бұрын
@@mikeguilbault1795 I suppose the pegs do scrape if you are trying to ride fast around corners. However that really is not what the bike was designed for, I do scrape them every now and then but not enough to not want the bike. As for seat height there is a big difference between the two bikes, the Speedmaster is very low. For performance riding the T120 wins! Depends what your preference is.
