My first motorbike was bought November 21, 1964.... and yes, I do remember that date! It was a 1965 Suzuki "Hillbilly" 80cc ring-dinger 2 stroke with two sprockets and an extra length of chain for when I wanted to go off-road. I was 15 1/2 years old and the differences with my mental outlook on life changed immediately! Motorcycling has been a part of my life for 58 years now and I have great memories of rides I've taken for all those years. I am now motorcyless, unfortunately, as a few years ago, after my last back surgery, I didn't think I could ever ride again. I gave my Yamaha FJR 1300 away and I have regretted it ever since. It turns out that I am more than physically able to ride again, but do not have the financial ability to buy another bike. Money is tight, but I still continue to hold out hope on being able to get another one. Last week I believed I might be able to purchase a "new" 2017 Moto Guzzi MG21 Flying Fortress. But... there's always a but... things have come up and I won't be able to do that. I will continue to hold out hope on getting another motorcycle as there is no other alternative for me. I need a job, is what I need! But at 73 soon to be 74 years old those things are hard to come by. Still, hope is what will get me through. Thank you, RedAng, I enjoy your videos and will share them with others when I can!

👍 A sterling career of motorcycling you have had 💪 I suppose life throws curve balls at us all. On the positive side great that you are physically able to ride again. Money is always a factor with these things, keep your hopes up and I am sure something will pop up for you. It is my pleasure and thank you, really glad you enjoy the videos. All the best to you with a happy 2023.

For me motorcycling is pure therapy.Two days ago I was on my 2023 Goldwing and just lowered the screen pushed the modular helmet up and slowed down to 40mph. Totally different and relaxing experiance. Today I went to look at this bike so I can do that on every sunny day. What price your happiness or mental health.

Much respect to British brothers who seem to mostly be riding on wet pavement. I live in NW Nevada, we have relatively short winters with modest snow, outside of winter, even rain is a bit of a stranger. I'm retired. I never take the bike out in other than clear, and 40+ degrees F. The conditions you guys ride in routinely would have me in my truck. We do have a lot of storm gutters that cross our streets, and it makes the traction control trigger on occasion but nothing like riding on wet streets all the time. Chops to you guys. And you are correct about the Street Scrambler (what I have). It's a great jet around town bike. If your home is a 1/4 mile up a dirt road off the pavement, it can do that also. But it's not for open road touring IMO. After about 50 miles on a highway, I've had enough for a while.
@redangrevival

🤙 Thanks brother, it is not ideal riding conditions over here, but we have to work with what we have! Give me a sunny day all day long. I agree, that is the reason I sold me Street Scrambler. Just not ideal for longer distance rides on the highway/motorway. Still regret selling it though. Thanks and happy riding

Linking that Motorcycling to mental health awareness has been a big game changer for me. I find a lot of freedom out there with your mind focusing on the road - you can think, but you can't dwell. I don't have a speed master - I have a Shadow 750 - but very similar style of bike. Whenever I think I might have the wrong bike, I take it out on the road and just loved it. I am pleased people are finding the mental health benefits of engaging and moving on a bike.

The battery on my Speedy died around 12000 miles , 20000 miles is very very good battery life i think .I also had a strange thing with my left wing mirror , unloosed itself but easy sorted when i got home lol . And same for me regarding money spent , the joy and freedom and especially the positive effects on my mental health that this fantastic bike has given me is priceless , getting into riding motorbikes has been one of my greatest decisions in life hands down , we tread a similar path it seems , hats off mate 👍

👍 That is a good point! Think it maybe time for a new battery. The current one has done a solid job 💪 Pesky left wing mirrors haha think it is due to the thread direction. I loved my Speedmaster when I had it, the only thing I wasn’t thrilled with was the gas tank not being larger. I rode often and long, filling the tank was always on my mind ! Absolutely beautiful bike to own and ride 👍 , I do miss it.

I kind of knew the answer before watching the video! I'm the same as you, I love my Speedy and she is the first bike I've owned in 40 years of motorcycling that is a keeper. There may be other bikes alongside the Trumpet Strumpet in the future, but me and her are together for good! On the battery issue, check the earth cable from the negative battery terminal to where it bolts to the bike. I had similar issues recently. There is enough continuity to allow the bike to turn on and run, but not to start as the amp draw when starting is way more. If the connection has loosened there may not be enough of a pathway for the many "wiggly amps" to complete the circuit when starting. Also, what you did was Bump Starting. Jump starting is when you use a power pack or jump leads from another vehicle. Looming forward to watching your further adventures.
@redangrevival

Haha I thought it may be a bit obvious!! It is such a loveable bike, despite maybe not being perfect for touring etc... Thanks I will take a look, perhaps a new battery maybe in order as well. Ah yes, that sounds correct, cheers was more of a bump start. Glad I got her going. Cheers

It’s worth mentioning that the reason I initially subscribed to your channel, was because I was searching Speedmaster videos. I think I was subscriber #346. I’ve bumped into you and said hello at the past 2 motorcycle shows too! Hehe… Anyway, I think your Bonnie is excellent - I have enjoyed your style of vlogging too. Let’s face it, there are dozens of You Tubers doing similar stuff, but yours is very down to earth and enjoyable to watch. Sadly, I think I have struggled with mental health issues, but typically I have never felt that I could discuss it with anyone. I’ve not been able to admit it - which seems really odd thinking about it as I am writing this! Ironically, I work in healthcare, (the NHS) and it is extremely stressful. Just like you, my bike is my escape from the torment. In 2021, I wanted to buy a Speedmaster, but ended up with an Interceptor - which actually I really enjoy owning. I’m looking forward to you doing more camping/ travel vids when the weather improves. Keep up the good work Gus! Thanks for helping me escape! The pennies don’t really matter. Motorcycling is a wonderful place to be!

Hi John, yes I remember bumping into you 👍 Thanks for subscribing and following along with the journey for the year, great to have you along. Cheers I appreciate it. We each deal with our problems differently, I used to find it very hard to talk about my mental health but have found the more I manage to be open about it the better I can deal with it. Thanks I cannot wait for another trip somewhere nice and sunny 😁 It is my pleasure and all the best to you for 2023

My guy…I can’t tell you how much your words resonate with me. Buying a motorcycle (2000 Triumph Adventurer 900) a few months ago has helped me cope with my depression and anxiety. It keeps me in the moment! No time and energy for sadness about the past or fretting about the future when I’m cruising. My ultimate goal is to buy a Speedmaster and drive all over America with it, but will see how far I can get on my Adventurer in the meantime. Thanks for your reviews and passion for the Speedmaster, and motorcycles in general. Big love from Johns Creek, Georgia 🇺🇸

Wow! You truly ride hard, 20k miles since August 21' is a lot! I bought my speedy in October of 21' with about 500 miles, I've only put an additional 8k since then. I got it for the same reasons, I like cruisers and the look of this one with that British touch to it with the Bonnie engine made it my number 1 choice. I've loved it, and I found your channel because of it which I'm glad for. As much as I love it I'm probably going to trade her in later this year for a HD Lowrider ST, I can only have 1 bike lol

Thank you for an enjoyable and informative video which helps a great deal with making up my mind about which bike to buy to re enter motorcycling, it’s been a number of years since I last owned a bike and instead of doing what I did as a teenager getting on the road at 4:30 in the morning on my 16th birthday riding a 250cc BSA Barracuda then graduating to a variety of 500 and 650cc machines before settling on 650cc Bonnie I’ve signed up for a motorcycling open road training programme which by all accounts is very worthwhile. I’m on the island of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean where sadly my late wife came from and know very well what it is to an enter a difficult time in life. Now that we’ve an authorised Triumph dealership once again on the island I feel more confident about buying a Triumph and the Speedmaster in particular, there’s plenty of places here to explore here from the beautiful coastline to the forested mountains, winter which can be both sunny and very cold lasts for around three months and rain once winter has passed is virtually non existent that coupled with some now excellent roads make returning to a bike very attractive. Thank you again.

Totally agree with your opinion on the speedmaster, love mine, getting ready to head out moto camping on the bike, but in a few weeks time, it's going to be around 36 to 38 C for the next week, the only sort of complaint I have with the bike is the fuel tank could be 14/15 litres but fuel economy is pretty good so I'm just really having a sOOk, use a multi meter on the battery if it is below 12.6V with motor not running I'd say the battery is the problem, Cheers and I hope you had a good christmas and new year....Ride safe :))

Great video again. Sorry about the dead battery. You mentioned you keep Speedy outdoors. Have you looked into motorcycle tents? You put it together, like IKEA and it really does a great job protecting the bike. So easy to put away the bike when you arrive at home. No more putting the cover on at night. I fastened mine onto a plank of wood, the bike rests on the wooden board which further secures the tent. Wind isn't an issue that way as well. Ciao Bella

Hi. To be honest, I don't understand some things. My first motorcycle was Intruder 800, bought new in 2015. In 5 years I ran more than 100000km. Without any problem (except caused by me). Original battery worked till I parked it to the garage. In summer 2022 i bought Rocket 3GT. After year and 3 months I have 33000km. Absolutely without any problem (except bags made by Givi - I think). For me is normal that motorcycle is reliable and without problems. Quality of production is much higher than years ago. So speaking that expensive thing lasts until end of warranty is strange. It must last 5-10 times more. Then, I was surprised when you said that 10000L is lot of money. I don't say that not, but I (from Middle-East Europe) expect that for Englishman cannot be problem to pay 3 months salary for the motorcycle. Last thing, I'm always freaked out if I see you driving in the opposite direction! ;) Good luck and enjoy riding!

I’ve had my Speedmaster 15 months now. Love almost everything. Only complaint is the seat. Just watched an Ol’ Man video and he liked the seat and he’s 6’2”. I’m 5’11” and I find it too far forward for me. 1” further back would make it great. Could also use firmer padding.

If you have to bump start your bike again put it in 4th gear wait till you get up a bit momentum then release the clutch it makes it easy to start and less chance of your back wheel skidding,I have also suffered from depression but riding a motore cycle is the best thing in the world for to help you fight it .

Seems like a decent price. And I agree: it always irritates me when someone asks me what I paid for a bike. It's for the owner to disclose, not others to ask. Basic manners. Proper rider if you're out on a bike in winter with a cold. Getting a hole in your sump is dreadful, but why the new tyres after that? I had a Suzuki B-King for 40,000 km/25,000 miles. Absolutely nothing went wrong with it. Ditto a Honda XRV750 over the same mileage. I'm glad you're happy with the Triumph.

Yup just basic manners I suppose 👍 Feels distasteful disclosing it, but I suppose everyone pays something for their bike! Yea can't let the weather get you down 💪 The oil from the sump went all over the rear tyre and contaminated it. All on insurance though. So great when you get a bike so reliable. Many thanks

Dear Angus, Many thanks for your videos - I really do enjoy watching them. Could you possibly help me? I'm looking at purchasing a 'nearly new' Bonneville Speedmaster around September (something with about 5-7,000 miles on the clock - and preferably from a Triumph dealership). If I do, I want the bike to be a 'keeper' - I'll have no intention of selling it, or swapping it for something else. Now, I would very much like to take it over to the Continent on the ferry, or the EuroTunnel, and perhaps, once or twice a year, do tour of France, Holland, Germany, Austria etc.. I'd love to go to Leipzig and Dresden in Eastern Germany, and even down into Krakow, Poland. I'm a big bloke - 6ft 4" tall, and 92kg - but have sat on the Speedmaster, and fell in love with it. What a comfortable machine! The question is this - while you were on your tours of France, Italy, and travelling through the Alps and Pyrenees, what did you do in terms of maintenance? When the bike got dirty, did you keep on top of it - or did you wait until you returned to England, and then give it a thorough going-over? Its easy to keep the bike in pristine condition, and wash it properly, if you're in the UK - but when you're travelling away from home, it's a different matter. I'm coming from a sports-tourer background, and those bikes, with their full fairing, are comparatively easy to keep clean (and rust free - which is what really concerns me). I would be very grateful for any advice you could give me, from a long-distance-touring perspective. Many thanks Angus for your time in advance. All the best, Neil (Meriden, near Coventry).

Hi Neil, it is my pleasure and really glad you enjoy the videos 👍 I used a product called ACF-50 to treat my bike before the trips. Check out allyearbiker.co.uk/ I did wash my bike a few times on tour. But not to a great standard. Must say it handled the dirt fine and I gave it a great clean up when I got back. Highly recommend ACF-50 Cheers

As a Speedmaster owner myself, I can say that it is a wonderful bike. I've had a couple of issues with the bike leaking oil through some electrical parts, the stator I believe. Afternoon RedAng - I have exactly the same problem with the battery not charging. It's waiting at the dealership in Taunton as we speak (they can't look at it until next Friday. Aaarghh!). What makes you think it's the alternator? My bike is only six months old, with 5000 miles - and it's spent nearly two months at the doctor's already. If it is the alternator too, I imagine it'll be (another) warranty repair, but I can't say, like you, it's been no trouble 'cos it's been a real pain! Though I do love it, when it behaves... Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, that is annoying! To be honest I don't know why I think it is the alternator 😂 Actually think I may just need a new battery, it has done 20k miles which is pretty good. Morning RedAng - yes, 'annoying' is one word for it... 🤐 Is your's a 2020 bike? If so, even with 20k miles, I would expect a battery (& alternator!) to last longer than two years-ish. Maybe I'm just naive? (I see you mention corrosion below - it's another bugbear of mine 'cos bikes rot so much more than cars.) I haven't heard from the dealer so I still don't know what the issue is for mine. I'm obviously interested to hear what the problem is with yours! Cheers, Chris

Morning RedAng - well, my news is not so good. I got a phone call from Taunton yesterday; they have not looked at the charging issue yet but have had the battery itself on charge. They also said the bike was out of oil and that I must have 'caused damaged to the engine'. 😠 The bike was in Exeter in August for a whole month because of an oil leak - they changed all the engine casings under warranty. I assume they re-filled the oil at the time, which begs the question, how can a bike lose ALL it's oil in four months? (I've done about 2000 miles in that time.) The oil light never came on, except on start-up when all the lights come on, but once the engine spins, there's oil pressure. Now, I have no idea what's going on - and I don't have much confidence in Taunton at the moment! Needless to say, I'm nowhere near getting the bike back yet. I'm waiting on another phone call today... I too have dodgey mental health (and Anna has had dreadful physcial health for years, which is especially bad this week), all of which impacts very negatively on both of us, although I am obviously particularly susceptible psychologically. Difficult times! Cheers, Chris

It's been quite a journey with Speedy. She's a beautiful bike and your customizations have made her a real head turner. I too suffer from anxiety, lack of self confidence and am borderline agoraphobic. You and Speedy have been such an inspiration, I have started my own journey on two wheels. It has been quite a challenge and its early days yet but if it was easy, it wouldn't be such an achievement. I am enjoying learning to trust my scooter and be as confident as I was during the training. Bluebottle, which is what I have called her, is as heavy as a 125 bike, so when I can handle her happily, I can handle a bike. A Speedmaster may be a little heavy for me 😂 but so worth it for you.😊
