The Triumph Motor Company was a British car and motor manufacturing company. The Triumph marque (trade-name) is owned currently by BMW. The marque had its origins in 1885 when Siegfried Bettmann (1863--1951) of Nuremberg initiated S. Bettmann & Co and started importing bicycles from Europe and selling them with his own trade-name in London. The trade-name became "Triumph" the year next, and in 1887 Bettmann was joined by a partner, Moritz (Maurice) Schulte, also from Germany. Beginning in 1889 the businessmen started producing their own bicycles in Coventry, England.
In November 1944 what was left of the Triumph Motor Company and the Triumph trade-name were bought by the Standard Motor Company and a subsidiary "Triumph Motor Company (1945) Limited" was formed with production transferred to Standard's factory at Canley, on the outskirts of Coventry.
The pre-war Triumph models were not revived and in 1946 a new range of Triumphs was announced, starting with the Triumph Roadster. The Roadster had an aluminum body because steel was in short supply and surplus aluminum from aircraft production was plentiful.
In the early 1950s it was decided to use the Triumph name for sporting cars and the Standard name for saloons and in 1953 the Triumph TR2 was initiated, the first of a series that would be produced until 1981.

I had a 1980 TR8 convertible, bought it brand new, off the showroom floor with 11 miles on it when nobody really knew what it was. It was fast and nimble, roomy and comfortable with a supple, taunt suspension, beautiful 5 speed gearbox, a roomy and useful trunk, razor sharp steering and the low end grunt of that Buick/Rover aluminum V8. Except for a few glitchy solenoids in the beginning, it was reliable and dependable and probably the most satisfying and enjoyable car I ever owned. The brakes were a little touchy as the rear drums had a habit of being rather touchy when warm, locking up if you stabbed the pedal too hard but it was manageable as long as you didn't panic and swap ends. Loved, loved, LOVED that car. Wish I still had one now with all of the restomod upgrades available. Gorgeous little hot rod!

My first car was a TR3A. Great little car. I learned a lot driving that car. Later moved on to an Abarth Zagato which allowed me to start racing & winning.. Finally settled in on racing Corvettes. But it all started with that TR-3.

Have had a 1964 TR4 and two TR6's a 69 BRG/OD and a 73 light Blue. Had a Brit mechanic in Old Town Maine Gary Smith who de-smogged it advanced the timing on the 69 @ no charge. He said I will be seeing a lot of these and need to teach myself what this will do. That 69 was hot. It was my college ride whilst on the G.I. Bill. Vroom vroom

1964-1965 I had a 1961 TR3A. Way too much fun to drive. 110 mph. Unfortunately it was my daily driver when I was in the USAF in Duluth, MN. It attracted my girlfriend. First date we drove it from Duluth to Minneapolis for the 1964 MN State Fair. Lack of actual heat from the "heater" caused me to get something else. I eventually ended up with a 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible in 1966, 4-speed, 4 carbs, 140 hp, Positraction. We drove that until I had two kids. I wish I still them.

In reply to Brian Critchleys' questions, to clarify the connection to Triumph motorcycles, the original 'Triumph Motor Company' was the motor car part of the company started by Schulte & Bettmann (Google 'Triumph Engineering Company' for more information). The 4 cylinder engine (& gearbox) fitted to the various Vanguards was also fitted to the TR2,3,4,& 4A,(also, incidentally, to the original Ferguson tractors). It was replaced by the 6 cylinder engine for the TR5 & 6, which was also used by the Vanguard Vignale, Vitesse, GT6, Triumph 2000, 2.5PI & 2500. Hope this helps.

Please, be serious. Triumphs, Austin Healeys, MG, Sunbeams, and of course, Jaguars, were all great cars. Probably my favorite car that I've ever owned was my '64 TR4. BTW, I'm an Engineer for GM. :)

It's been too many years, but during them I think my TR-3 was the most fun. It got replaced by an MGB, then several other sporty cars until at this point I have a Porsche 911 Turbo. Great as it is, the memory of what my TR was still dominates. Must admit though, the Lucas electrical system always gave me fits.

I paid $400 for my first car in 1970. It was a '64 TR-4. Great car to learn mechanics on as almost everything broke at one time or another beginning with the head gasket. Sold it 20 months later for $785 and went off to college. Eventually obtained the car I dreamed about in 1970. An Elan.

I think we have to throw this out to the whole community. You've exceeded my personal knowledge. OK, team, what do we know? In the interim, I'd suggest you try Wikipedia and there are a number of books about Triumph too. Motorbooks in the US is a good source for these. Good luck and thanks for watching and for your post. I never knew it, but at one time my little TR was a Porsche eater. Funny today the TR4 eats the six due to the lack of weight. Ya, see boys, on a race track the IRS doesn't do much of anything except weigh you down. yep, kind of like sand bags in your trunk. Oh and besides that, that little 4 cylinder engine, no matter what you do, makes more power than the 6. I'm just sorry I ever gave it away now. Don't believe me? Go read the results of yesterday's race. And the 911, oh gosh, it was an embarrassment.
@johncahill3849
@johncahill3849 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Shmoe Almost none of that is true. The IRS isolates left and right wheels so a bump on one side doesn't destabilize the car in a turn. A 6 cyl is inherently better balanced than a 4, inherently makes more torque…and power, you can get as much as you want from either one, but it's easier with a 6 (less improvement needed/cyl). I'm glad you liked your TR4, I've enjoyed 3 TR6's including a new one in 1972. Still drive a 73…amazing torque! As for which cars win any particular race, it comes down to a lot of things weight is one, wind resistance is another (the 6's Kammback actually is smoother than the 4's).
@johncahill3849
@johncahill3849 9 жыл бұрын
John Cahill I'm tempted to add that the TR6 was the best selling Triumph of all time, and was still in high demand when management decided to replace it with the wedge design. In retrospect that was probably an error at least from a marketing point of view (although I know TR7 and 8 owners love those cars!).
@joeshmoe781
@joeshmoe781 9 жыл бұрын
Everything you say is absolutely true. True true true. Yep, a six is inherently balanced, yep, a six can flow more air. One thing a six can also do is weigh more, much more. And IRS is great but it's not needed on a race track. In a race what does extra weight do? It makes you slower. So everything you say is true but when my little Porsche eater goes by you in turn two and never looks back, your car is yesterday's news. Go read the results of races in Europe. Fours are lighter and faster and their LSDs work so much better. One more thing four do; they win, the sixes lose. So while you drive your six and feel oh so special, know that if I came upon you, you'd be eating my dust. I know, we don't race those cars here any more. In GB they do, and the fours kick ass. They don't bother bringing out a six, why bother? It lost already. BTW. The TR8 was a great car, I owned one too. But is also lost against the lighter four cylinder Ferguson tractor engine.

Torque = accelerating HP. Faster RPM also =s the same thing.
@johncahill3849

Since you want to base your argument on racing results, I'll leave you with this: Ferraris were beating everybody in the 60's with 12 cylinder motors that were only 2.5 liters. Ford had to go to 5 liters and then almost 7.5 liters to catch up (and they were 8 cylinders in case that's not obvious). Think about that….should Ford have gone with a 4 cylinder? And why did Ferrari do so well despite the huge disadvantage of so many cylinders (!) Let me just say that I think you're oversimplifying and that was my original point. As for your "tractor" motor, I'll tell you a secret, that's actually a myth. It was always a car motor, and the engine block alone borrowed for agricultural use for a while. But no it didn't start out as a tractor motor, nor did any of the car parts cross over. Anyway, look enjoy your TR4….it's a great car, go eat some Porsches with it, huh?
