Even before things went south with Rik and his desire to expand his catalog, the music industry was changing under their feet. "Corporate Rock Radio" was the norm for playing already established bands like Journey and whoever MTV was pushing at the time. Had Triumph stayed the course from 85 to 90, they would be cast aside as the Great Wall of Nirvana would be coming, crashing down on them

The dance around the issue as to why they broke up speaking in generalities. It’s a shame. I’m from Canada and really started to dig them in the late 70s lay it on the line became one of my all-time favorite songs. And then I moved to the states in 1980 and was pleased to see them starting to grow, their reputation down here and was really pleased. I would turn my friends on to them in college. But like Mike says do you know they went out on top? They’re probably didn’t have any more great albums in them and frankly my favorite albums of theirs were their 70s albums anyways.

Rik admittedly never wanted stardom, very ambivalent imo. Gil and Mike gave him a chance, they rode it but record company pressures hurt their egos. I'm reading Rik's memoir and wish Gil and Mike would comment on some stuff just for their perspective. Rik was pissed when Gil changed the lyrics of Rock You Down off Surveillance album. Rik did go to studio on Thunder Seven recording and did stuff on his own without Gil or Mike. Was that ok to do? Just nice to all sides.
@spuds6423
@spuds6423 3 ай бұрын
@@markcarchedi915by the mid 80'S, most of the bands making the money outside of Rush were a 4 to 5 piece with a front man or woman. Even if Rik and Gil saw eye to eye on just about everything, Rik had the "look" and would further be thrust into the "star role". This was also Gil's band, not Rik's. Look at Twisted Sister, Dee Snider wrote most of the well known lyrics/ music, he was not the original lead singer and it was always Jay Jay French's band. Yet, they imploded as well. The next 6 years would have been tough for Triumph to exist as they were without going the same overly produced "Mutt Lange Era" route as Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Whitesnake or Poison. Triumph could never replicate that kind of music live which was the core of their fan base.
@markcarchedi915
@markcarchedi915 3 ай бұрын
@@spuds6423 Nice assessment and Rik did have the "look" to front the band. He mentioned in memoir that he had to basically play the game but was somewhat reluctant about it. Rik was all about making music and creating, not so much superstardom. When Ron Nevison came on board for The Sport of Kings, he wanted Rik to sing all the songs because he had the look and was up fronting the band. He didn't want a drummer doing that. I have a friend who agreed with Nevison and thought Gil's ego got in the way. I just don't think Gil and Mike wanted to change what the band was all about and not sell out. Either way they just never hit it huge enough with rock fans outside their core.
