Great review, I have a blue / tan 1972 TR-6. Living in Southwest France, the rural backroads are perfect. Won't win any races as you say but it is a dream to drive. First thing I did was take out the radio... the exhaust note is better anyways. Cheers!

I purchased a NEW 1972 TR-6 in Kentucky and paid $3950 for it. No AM radio because of European vs U.S incompatibility. I remember it cost $25 to tune it up at the dealership which was a lot of money back then. It was my all time favorite car to drive. I loved that car and wish i had it today.

Enthusiastic review. I have a '69 and love it. They are simple at first glance but definitely some challenges when working on it. Stock oil filter, fuel pump and of course Lucas electrical gremlins. All can be upgraded and made simpler. Motor is smooth and torquey. Just drive.

It's advisable to get one with overdrive as it will make it notably quieter and more economic when cruising at higher speeds (although it's anything but a quiet car). The engine has a lot of torque, and it's not really for spinning up to high RPM. A friend her in the UK has just bought a 1969 version which comes with the Lucas mechanical fuel injection. That was (theoretically) meant to give 150 hp, but that's optimistic. It wasn't sold in the US as it could not meet the emission regulations. There are a lot of common mods on TR6s (and other TRs), such as adding electronic ignition, the emergency bonnet/hood release and many will get rid of those US spec bumper over-riders (although they aren't as objectionable on the TR6 as some other roadsters of the era). If somebody does want a bit more power and is willing to spend the money, there are EFi conversions available with some hotter cams and so on. Around 170 hp is fairly easily attainable if that's your thing.

Nice presentation, with a really nice example. I had two TR-6's years ago and the driving experience is really unique. It's such a visceral car. I can't imagine spending $30,000 on one of these, as I'm well aware of how they're designed and put together. It's really a simple 1950's design that was old by the time it debuted in 1969. Collectors with a lot of cash will pay for these, but enthusiasts would find a quaint anachronism of a sport car which requires a lot of upkeep. I still love these cars but the escalation in price, even though I could afford it, is beyond me.

50’s design? Yes and no, European cars had injection, also independant suspension at the back, overdrive, so in some respect not really 50’s design. Separate frame yes, but for a classic car that’s always a good thing.

I worked at a used Ford dealer back in "77. They had a TR 6 they didn't seem to care about. I was the car wash kid and gopher I kept the car hidden in the back. It was in Fla. and any errand ended with a beach cruise. I'd slip any plate I could find between the gas cap and trunk and off I'd go. Don't have one now, but I hope a trip to Barrett Jackson this year will bring back old memories.

I bought a Pimento Red TR6 for £1500, when I came on leave to UK from Nigeria in 1976. Unfortunately I had a rear end collision after only two weeks and it took all two months of my leave to repair. While I was without the car I went over to New York to visit friends and see how you were doing after 200 years. It was your bi-centenary. I am now looking for another but they are circa £30,000 for a good one.

Beautiful example of the TR6. If your looking for a little more fun I recommend a TR4A-IRS. It's everything that the TR6 is but powered by the 4 cylinder 2138cc engine that just gushes torque and has 105HP in stock form. It has the very same chassis and much more stylish fenders and hood. I admit I am biased, however, having built and owned one for many years. I really just love all the TR's.

In reality the difference when driving was not that dramatic as the torque was still decent enough on the 2.5 litre six cylinder engine. I got a British spec cylinder head with a phase two cam on my US spec 1970 engine, it lifted the horsepower up where it should be, but the old spec was not terrible.

@jaman878

The gov’t mandated that cars should be able to survive a 5 mph collision without damage. They didn’t say how they should do this. Triumph added these battering ram bumper pads. MG on the other hand completely redesigned the front end of the MGB with form fitting elastomeric panels. The purists hate the later MGBs but I think it looks very nice, way better than the Triumph bumpers. In 1975 Trimuph raised the bumper and put the Turn signals underneath the bumper. 75 cars had amber/clear front turn signals. One year only. 76 lenses were all amber.

He got the Black Bumper guards wrong. From 1969 to 1973 TR6's had a clean bumber with NO Black Bumper Guards. Then in late 1973 ALL American TR6's HAD to have them (the black bumper guards) so all American bound TR6's from 74' to the end of production in 1976 HAD the black bumper guards. Describing the black bumper guards as "An American Spec thing" is inaccurate and missleading. NOT all TR6's had them, such as ALL TR6's from 1969 to 1973. These early TR6's had clean bumpers without the guards. That's how you can instantly tell the difference between earlier 69-73 models and the later 74-1976 models which HAD the guards.
