Harry has had his wheel bearing on his TR6 grumbling for a little while now, but with all the restrictions going within the last year it has been difficult for him to get over to me so I can take a look at it. However at long last I can now replace the wheel bearing that is on it's way out, and share this with you all my good loyal subscribers. I will add, if you do take on a job like this with your front wheel bearing on a TR6, please remember to clean your brake disc thoroughly on reinstalling. You don't want any grease or oil on the disc, and please don't forget to pump that brake pedal before heading out on the road! The wheel bearing for this video was purchased from TRGB a truly excellent TR specialist and parts supplier, please check out there website for more info:

That's a much simpler bearing set-up than the MGB, and a far less fiddly job repeatedly dismantling, reassembling and checking to see if you have the shims within tolerance. Beautiful looking TR6, I'm envious of the owner!

Oh yes, Triumph's are much easier than MGs with front wheel bearings, no messing about with shims 👍

Bit late to the party watching this video, but as always a good informative tutorial. Good tip about getting the grease in the bearings. I think I do something similar when setting the nut, I tighten to compress everything then back off until the shim/spacer/washer under the nut can just be moved with a small screwdriver. Looking forward to your next video. Good to know your back is behaving at the moment from the comments 👍

Taper roller bearings need to have a preload on them. No play. Not to tight but not loose either. The bigger the bearing the more preload. The carrier bearings in the rear diff are preloaded and so is the pinion bearing. Tighten the wheel bearing up pretty snug and spin the wheel a few turns. Then back off the nut till you feel some free play then turn the nut in with your fingers till there is no free play. Then snug it up a bit from there with a wrench or socket so you have a bit of preload. You will never have a failure.

Great video Steve. one question,.couldnt you use the old bearing placed on the new one to tap down evenly? rather than brass drift at 3,9,6,12.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics Жыл бұрын
You can reuse them, but it’s not advisable as they are machine matched and wear to each other 👍

Another great video, Steve. Thank you. Can I ask what torque setting you tighten the wheel nuts to? Cheers Grahame
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Grahame, the torque setting for wheel nuts on a TR6 is 85lbft for steel wheels and 65lbft for wire wheel hubs 👍

Thanks Steve. Do you happen to know the recommended torque setting for 5J x 13 steel wheels on a Spitfire 1500? And thanks again for all the great videos!
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
The factory manual states between 38 to 48lbft. I've always done Spitfire wheel nuts to 48lbft and had no issues 👍

So why is the felt on the inner seal facing in? Doesn't the metal carrier it sits in rub the bearing? Why would it not be flipped with felt to the inside?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 жыл бұрын
If the felt was facing the bearing it would collect up into the bearing and gum up the bearing. The metal shield doesn't hit the bearing race, it's designed to be like that, just securing it in place. The felt is more of a packer, so dirt and grim don't get in from the outside and needs to be on the outside as I fitted it and seal into the stub axle which has a slot for it to run in after it has been lightly oiled 👍

Steve said he had soaked the felt pad in KTF over night. What is KTF please?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 жыл бұрын
It’s ATF, Automatic Transmission Fluid, sticky speaking, socking over night is not necessary, it’s just Harry had already done it before I when to fit them. All this does is soften the felt before fitment. If you do do it this way, just make sure you squeeze the excess oil out of the felt before fitting it. Normally I just go round the felt with a light covering of engine oil, it has the same effect 👍🏻

Thanks Steve. Appreciated. Just removed my old bearings and the inside of the hub is packed full of grease which I cleared out so I could see the notches to drive out the bearing carriers. Should I repack with grease the same or is it ok just to grease the new bearings as per your video? Very useful video btw - wouldn’t have attempted this without it.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 жыл бұрын
You have to judge how good the grease is inside the hub, but in general you'd repack them with grease. If you have remove the grease, or are unsure, then repack it with fresh grease is the best way to go 👍
