Triumph TR6: Part 1 - Teardown

Today we start the process of converting the 1976 Triumph TR6 to fuel injection, electric fans, a custom wiring system with a PMU-16, and full exhaust. This will be an ongoing series where specific information will be divided up between videos to make it easier to locate for those interested and allow time for parts to be shipped, machined, and/or prepared.

When renovating my 76 TR6, I bought an exhaust manifold off of an earlier model that did not have the "air pump" pipes on it and got rid of the whole system. This would be cheaper than spending money on the exhaust manifold that you removed, which you said needs a lot of work. The "air pump" did nothing for performance (actually robbed a little power to run the pump) and did nothing for the environment. All it did was put fresh air into the exhaust to dilute the pollution at the tailpipe so it could pass the EPA tests of 1976. Removing this system also cleans up the engine bay in a big way.

Good stuff, I will be following. It would be nice to hear a little more about the components you are replacing/upgrading and where you sourced them (along with pricing). For example, where did you get the fan delete part, and does the quality look good? Did the exhaust manifold have the injection tubes installed? If so, how are you going about in removing them and plugging the ports? Thanks.

Did it really make sense to dump the original fan ? Could always use the electric one as a backup without it switching in and out all the time ?

Mechanical fans work well in many situations, but they rob a lot of performance from the engine and without proper shrouding, are much less effective in high demand situations. When an engine is this low on power already, your stay talking about double digit performance percent increases by swapping out to an electric fan even ignoring the other benefits.

Cool project Casper! While I'm not a triumph fan, I do need to learn more about the PMU16. My '67 Mustang, (Frankenstang) needs electric help badly!
