Hi Laura, I found through Junction Fiber Mill Podcast. Im loving all your knits and your Trivia angle too! I to hardly knit garments, I knit mostly shawls, some very large ones, and like you am a faithful Stephen West fan. His shawls are my most favorite to knit. I am a color freak! So I can really go wild with his textures and color changes. I also have a Podcast here, @theshawlknitterunplugged where I share my nomadic knitting, weaving, spinning life. I spend half the year in India, and the other half in South Africa, where Im originally from. I look forward to watching some of your back episodes. Be well, Sita.

trivia of the video!! Thanks to my chemist husband who has a few patents under his name !!! He bought me a card with the first circular knitting needle patent Filed in the USA on December 21,1937 by L.M. Miler, patent # 2,102,600. The Painting in question is Madonna Knitting by Bertram of Minden 1400-1410. Bones for me the earliest known Knitted garment as of now is a pair of socks from Egypt in the 11th century. but they are a fine gauge and comply color work pattern suggesting knitting would be older then that.

Yep, you're the first person to correctly answer the Madonna! My source says circular needles may have been first invented in a different country, though that's cool you have a copy of the US patent.

Greetings from Maryland. I love your podcasts and look forward to knitting with you in my early morning knitting time ❤️ One of my quirks with knitting scarves and shawls is not loving obvious wrong sides when they show. Would you be willing to show the backs of your knits? Thanks for all the time and energy you put into this wonderful channel. I also first saw you on the MillCast Podcast🥰

It's always great to see you! Love your cardigan - what an amazing construction! I would give up on that project too, I have in the past - seems a great idea and then wow what a slog haha. All of your WIPs seem a lot of fun and really wonderful yarns to work with. You always have great trivia questions, I think circular needles are more recent but I will be looking the info up online.

Thank you Laura for featuring the Lindal Sweater in your lineup for this episode of Trivial Knits! I remember when I first asked if you would consider testing for me, knowing that you typically didn't work on larger projects like this, and you agreed to do it saying that you had been wanting to make a sweater - I was so completely thrilled! Then to see your color choices and how really truly beautiful they looked together! All the testers loved seeing your work and your contribution to this project was priceless. Thank you so much for everything! I look forward to seeing what's on your needles next! xo

I love your Aion Cowl⭐ What size did you knit? Your pattern/yarn/colour combinations are inspiring, thank you for sharing💚
@trivialknits5 ай бұрын
Thank you! I just kind of kept knitting until I thought it would wrap around my neck snugly. I'm not sure I knitted it to a particular size. As far as I can tell in the pattern, the sizes only affect how long your cowl is (not how tall), so you can really modify it as you go to be whatever you want.

I’m knitting the Lindal Cardigan right now and find it very challenging. I am halfway around and love the way it is turning out.
@trivialknits5 ай бұрын
Nice! What yarns and colors are you using for yours?
@suelowther51045 ай бұрын
I’m using Making Tracks- The Deep End and Lookout Ledge. Because they don’t offer a dark navy in the Farm Fresh colors, I substituted Drops Karisma #75 colorway. Such a nice combination.

My understanding is making a yarn Superwash takes away the scales. I think of scales like friction = rough. The more a yarn is treated it would be smoother and softer.

The micron counts for Merino varies from over 25 to about 16 or 17. When you get extra fine merino that usually means under 20. Merino that is 25 microns has more of a tooth to it. Yeah it feels more like natural wool. Just found your podcast by way of Junction Fiber Mill and will go back and watch all of your previous ones. Have you thought of showing us one of your favorite/most worn FO from the past. Say Stephen West shawls or something? Just a thought. Madonna is knitting in the round.
@trivialknits4 ай бұрын
Yes, it was the Madonna who was portrayed knitting in the round! That's a good idea to show my most worn FOs in a future video. Thanks for the idea!

Bonus Q: 1800s, 19th Cent?? 3. Bonus bonus Q: Oh gosh...why do I feel like I've seen an image of this type of painting? Gosh...I have no idea, maybe a royal person?? a queen??

My guess is the first circular needles were used in Norway in the 18th century. Your Lindal cardigan is stunning.

Circular knitting needles are said to be invented in Norway in the 19th century, but the design seems to be patented in the U.S.

I am apprehensive in using superwash wool because of its "growth" factor when washed. How was the Swish yarn for you? I would be using it for granny squares (crochet). PS: You would be a good teacher for an easy KAL. I am sure KAL can be a pain. :)
@trivialknits5 ай бұрын
So far I love the Swish yarn. It doesn't really feel like the type of superwash yarn that is so heavy it's in danger of growing (though I know exactly what you mean). It's lighter somehow. There are so many colors that it would probably be great for granny squares. It's very nice to work with too.
@peggytraeg5 ай бұрын
@@trivialknits Thank you for taking the time to reply. I very much dislike making something and then it doesn't look good after a wash. I am, also, very sensitive to wool fibers. I am still learning which yarns I am willing to put against my skin.

I may want to try the Stephen West MKAL this yr but in a really budget way. I’m considering perhaps Knit Picks Stroll. I’d love your feedback! Also since you’re sensitive to some wool too, do you find PurlSoho Linen Quill prickly/itchy?
@trivialknits4 ай бұрын
Yes! I have used Stroll before, but not in many years. It's a decent yarn to work with, though it doesn't work up as soft as some other superwash sock yarns (in my experience, but your mileage may vary). It would probably be a good budget option, though! If you want to add mohair, I do think the Knit Picks Aloft yarn is pretty nice as mohairs go. I've never used their Palette yarn, but I want to try it. It's nonsuperwash so I'm not sure how it is for wool sensitivities, but it looks nice in the projects I've seen people complete with it. I have worked with Linen Quill but never actually finished a project with it yet, so I can't say if it blocks out softly. I'm guessing it's pretty prickly, with those long linen fibers that stick out! If anyone else has thoughts, I hope they'll see this comment and reply.

Hi, i want to knit the Dustland Cowl exactly what you did and with the same yarn. Did you cast on the same number of stutches per the pattern? And how long is your cowl? Thanks
@trivialknits4 ай бұрын
Yes, I believe I pretty much followed the pattern except for the length and the twist. Mine is about 20 inches long before seaming.
@paulafralick29055 ай бұрын
In your baby hat that isn't soft, is it a high twist? That might be the difference.
@trivialknits5 ай бұрын
Interesting. I think the yarn is pretty high twist, but not higher than other superwash sock yarns I've worked with. I'll have to look into that!

Citcular needles. 1910 in the US. The first 2 needle knitting was in Syria in the early Christian era -- before the 12th century. My bes5 guess.
