I was about to say that sounds a few thousand years later then they really were invented... Even the chips have been around in the form of tostadas and even the fried chips served with salsa at restaurants. Its just that the 1st mass production factory to make them was made in the 40's in los Angeles... Most likely the late 40's after ww2

Well as a Mexican I have to clarify that tortilla chips where invented in Mexico, we have thousands of years eating maize derivated foods, like tortillas, tacos, tamales, tostadas,atoles ( which is maize dough mixed with water, brown sugar cones named piloncillo and cacao, or just chocolate, it's a beverage to be served hot or chill, By the way it was drank bt Aztec emperor before visiting his harem of 300 girls, been reported to have 60 of them pregnant at the same time) all this maize products are made of nixtamalized maize, so to be short tortilla chips are mislabeled the real name for this is TOTOPOS, in Spanish but it actually came from tlaxcaltotopocht wich means tortilla and thunder, so it's like a tortilla that makes big Noise when eaten, like a thunder, you can go even to the Wikipedia article for TOTOPOS, probably Mexican inmigrants took it to USA and then it expanded worldwide, it's like chocolate, tomato, peanut, avocado, maize, turkey and many other produce that Mexico gave to the world that are often mislabeled. By the way. Great video.

There are two kinds of tortilla chips. The first is the snack kind shown here, made from cornmeal and molded into triangles. The second is the kind you get in Mexican restaurants, which are simply made from corn tortillas that have been cut into triangles and fried. Those are made with nixtamalized corn which has a much nicer flavor.

@wessmall7957

Piano What kind of tortilla chips you eat in Ireland? Here in America we eat plain salted tortilla chips. Tex-Mex restaurants usually serve plain salted tortilla chips with salsa as an appetizer. In that context, they are just "Chips". Otherwise they are "Tortilla Chips". In America "Doritos" are flavored with nacho cheese powder or other flavors.

Reality Check i think that lady your talking about developed the machines to automate making tortillas and chips. they were eating tortilla chips in texas in the 1800's at the alamo! lol. when people say they were invented in los angeles, its only the mass production that was developed. i think they just made a mistake in this video by saying they were invented in los angeles in 1940's, when it was just the mass production of chips and tortillas.

We have a Frito Lay chip factory in the city just south of us. They do tours and when you tour, you get to eat chips right off the line. They are a million times better right off the line. All they have to do is open a burger restaurant at the factory and they’d have thousands of customers wanting to come and eat burgers with fresh chips.

Why isn't anyone wearing gloves? They reach right into the dough with their bare hands, that's totally unsanitary for food production.

Why do people think not wearing gloves is unsanitary? Gloves aren't some magical antibacterial device that will ensure cleanliness. A guy wearing gloves can still scratch his ass and pick his nose, but you would still think it's sanitary. As long as someone who is handling food ensures they wash their hands properly than you won't get sick.

Hello, go to any kitchen where they are working on dough. And tell me that they're using gloves. A lot of food is worked on with bare hands, not only dough. As long as it's going to be cooked later, there's no issue. And as long as the workers wash their hands after, before touching anything else.

Just to clarify for all the idiots who still like 9gag memes and haven't got the concept yet: Air in bags of chips are to prevent them from being crushed. Also, if you pay for 200g of chips, the bag could be size of Jupiter and you would still get what you paid for. Damnit.

He said "Tortillas were invented in los Angeles." He didn't say "tortilla chips". I do agree that he meant something different, but he said it wrong, so it's natural that someone would jump in to correct it. Plus in Mexico, it's more common to see a normal tortilla than a fried one, we call the fried ones "Tostadas".
