katya is so real for this, like addiction recovery is almost NEVER as easy as "i stopped and never relapsed." and whenever people hear about a celebrity relapsing, there's always an air of disappointment about it which must be so fuckin hard esp if they've talked openly about being on the road to recovery. in reality, recovery is less like a road and more like a roller coaster

i loved this part of the pod, espc relating to some of the fans comments lately. Katyas been sober for years now, yet just because she has a more peppy energy on the pod people feel the need to assume she relapsed. I find that so gross to assume. You can have your concerns (as baseless as they may be), but its just hurtful and inappropriate to just crudely put it out there like that. Im so happy to see katya talk about this, and how shes shared her experience in small ways :)

My uncle became a severe alcoholic after a nasty divorce in the 80's. It was before I was born. AA helped him get out of it and later he volunteered as a hotline operator for alcoholics and as a mentor to some people who were in the process of sobering. He was the most life-appreciating, happy person I ever knew, despite all that he went through.

⁠@@bxaddiebratzBecause putting someone on a pedestal as a role model makes the person more afraid to make mistakes, in fear of disappointing the audience. Making a platform out of mental health issues, addiction, etc on purpose can be good when the spokesperson knows what they’re doing. But “inspiring others” also may mean that the people who are drawn to a good cause because of a public figure can abandon the cause if the public figure inevitably makes a mistake.

This is so true and to take it a step further and to Katyas point we mustn’t out ourselves either because we then get affiliated with a program or group along with our success or failures within sobriety. I’ve maintained sobriety for 8 years now and fortunately have not experience relapse. I am very low-key about how I identify my abstinence and sobriety to people when I go out to bars and work parties because I am acutely aware of the importance of personal anonymity.

i would also assume that outing someone as attending AA/NA/etc only brings distrust to those meetings and shame. like can you be honest with your therapist if you suspect that they're leaking that information? to the media or to your parents or whoever else

i completely understand why she wishes she never said it publically, and she's so real for saying that she's not there to help others, she's there to help herself. it's great to have people who we look up to for inspiration or hope, but there must be a lot of pressure to always appear to be a shining example of 'success' when really you may not be doing well at all in that moment. she doesn't owe anybody else her recovery, she only owes it to herself

Hopefully this starts to change peoples mind about how the show exploits peoples mental health for entertainment and then portrays it as a good thing. Your essentially forcing the audience and other girls to trauma bond with each other or worse, invalidate or not care about their feelings because they don’t know them that well and if anybody life brought up trauma to you that quickly after knowing them (remember the show is filmed quicker than it’s rolled out, the audience has more time to process what the girls are saying and get updates as well via internet). Glad she was finally able to talk about it, it’s a concept of recovery I don’t think gets discussed enough

Idk if this is violation of the traditions but those of us in the program work out program differently from others but I love what Katya said about how it truly comes down to addicts helping addicts and that is something we must cherish more in and out the program. Sobriety is not an upward moving straight line it has lots of ups and downs

We all should just do our best to battle our demons and we shouldn't put anyone on a pedestal bc everyone has their own struggles and many are not even public. It's good that some people are actively trying to get better but I would never condemn a person for being in a fragile state where fighting the addiction is not possible. Addiction has some common things with depression. Its a weight you have to carry and sometimes you just don't have the strength yet to fight it

while i do agree, i think kayta proved that the community that comes with any addiction can go one of 2 ways, you are either drug buddies and keep each other in addiction or just like the gig story, it made harder for her to keep relapsing because she suppose to be a role model for others. signing up to be a celeb doesnt people signing up to be a role model or be right about everything you say or support, its to be an REAL example of a human struggling with lots of things still in the spotlight.

I love that Katya pointed out the problematic aspects of AA. Another dark side that involve AA is that, the court can order you to go to AA or loose your license or your job. And when Katya said that the statistic were low, it seems to be low enough that going to AA or not going to AA have the equal chance of success or failure. If it helped her, then great. But AA shouldn't be the only option available and it shouldn't mandated by court.
