I nearly drowned it: 2025 Triumph Scrambler 1200X tested off road and on road

I have learned to listen carefully to your reviews as you will often “imbed” vital information while ridding, like the brakes for instance….“you can’t two finger it like your secondary school disco girlfriend…” had me nearly blowing my morning coffee ☕️ out my nose 😆👍!

Great review Tim. Particularly liked the deep puddle adventure; I could feel my boots filling too😄. I note your comments about “Lower quality components “ compared to the XE. I recall my engineering design lecturer explaining to us how he defines quality as “fit for purpose”. 30+ years later I still can’t come up with anything better. So, if the purpose of the X is different (less) as per the design brief compared to the XE, then it’s difficult to say it’s lower quality. I can’t think of a bike journalist who doesn’t say the same thing on reviews for different bikes …. And I don’t have a scrambler. And and I too think Triumph are making a hash of the instrument choices. Cheers

I’ve just got the X. Been on various adventure bikes for years including 1290SAS and lastly a GSA. The Scrambler is such a breath of fresh air. So much fun and no I don’t miss a quick shifter or hill hold or even cruise control. I opted for the X rather then the XE mainly for seat height and also because I feel the XE looks too lanky and odd and I loath gold cycle parts! Wish I he’d brembos but you know what the brakes work fine. As for the dash well it tells me what I need to know. I’ve added a Unit garage screen so this is now my adventure travel bike

Respect. I know that green lane and that puddle in particular. I do it on my KTM 250 EXC (a proper enduro) and am well impressed you got through it unscathed. Maybe see you down the lanes on a Harley Davidson Pan America next time I am out. Now that would make an interesting video.

I know that puddle too. Brave man. Last time I was there the bloke I was with hit a submerged rock and whisky throttled his KTM 990 adventure into the scenery (no damage luckliy) so it can bite. In fact I usually avoid that section when it's deep so I don't have to ride with 'squelchy boots' 😀 I had a Scrambler XE and sort of regret selling it but the suspension really worked better at speeds I wasn't comfortable with off-road plus the hot exhaust cat (which I think is moved on the newer version. Now I have an enduro for green lanes and a big ADV for the road. I think the X has too many compromises for the price - brakes and dash mainly - so if was buying again I'd still go for the XE. The previously owned one was my only bike at the time and it covers a lot of bases.

Ha ha that was pretty funny, love the big puddle crossing thought for sure you were going for a big dipper 😂 XE for me, no brainer at £1400 extra unless you're a shortarse.... Just wish it had a physically larger headlight and traditional twin clocks (with the modern electronics) for extra retro appearance. On my radar .... 🙂

I had a Street Scrambler 900 for three years and loved that but wanted something else. The Scrambler 1200X was on my list because I'm way too short for XE, but I bought a DCT NT 100 and have been more than happy with that. I think I'd probably buy the Speed Twin 1200 over the Scramber 1200X, because it's probably a better motorcycle for the riding I do most often.

i had the XE when it first came out …i really really regret selling it . two issues i had was the comfort seat being very uncomfortable and the heat from the exhaust being too much during the summer and slow moving town traffic ..but that engine is superb

I decatted my XC and got a custom seat. heat is gone. The low seat is actually the most comfortable factory option

Wouldn't trade my XE for this and wouldn't have traded my old 900 Scrambler either. That horrible dash, the suspension and definitely the Nissins would be enough to put me off. Hats off for washing your boots though!

Impressive .......going by those tyres .....I assume you were sat right back on the seat for THE PUDDLE tho?....last time I tried that sort of thing with block patterns.on a little xt125r ..half the weight .....front washed right out ......nice camber hidden away 🫣...respect! you gave it a .nice little muddy plug

It's a lovely looking bike. I've never owned a Triumph, primarily to me not wanting to give my local main dealer the business (Central Bristol). I don't know if I expect too much from dealers or most of them really don't care 🤔 Weird they don't offer cruise as an option on the X, personally I wouldn't buy a bike without cruise these days. 👍 Also secondary school girlfriend at the disco 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Tim, the 1980s called and they want their Steel Twin-spar frame and twin rear shocks back! ;) :( I don't personally like the now "classic" look (round headlight, trying to make a new bike look old), but I understand the (marketing/sales) appeal. What I can't understand is why people accept in the 21st century, in a "premium" brand (and premium-ish price), such nasty and compromised 1960/70s tech as per above??? :( Imagine how much better it would be with a proper (torsionally rigid) ally frame/engine as a stressed member, with decent mono-shock suspension (not to mention how much lighter it would be!!). Seems like it could turn a good bike into a great one? (and for 12k, with the above "tech", it seems overpriced, no? ). 🤷‍♀ Great review however, keep up the good work :) Is cruise/heated grips, an optional extra at least?

For me the most disappointing thing about the 1200X is the non removable pillion peg attachments, they stick out like a sore thumb ,if you fall and accidentally hit one of them they bend easily inwards, the bike has a big chance that it will be rideable but if those are bend you permanently damaged the frame and it can be a write off for most insurance companies.

It's only 1000 £ cheaper than the xe but is lacking all the high quality equipment. Should be another 2000 £ cheaper, this. But Triumph got really greedy there.

Baffled by Triumph sticking that awful gauge cluster on their more expensive bikes. I'm REALLY keen on the new Tiger Sport 800, but coming from a BMW with a dash that tells you every single thing you could possibly want to know what's going on with your bike (as well as an excellent turn by turn navigation system), to that cheap looking thing would be a genuine unwanted compromise

I genuinely think if Triumph could give the screen an anti-glare finish like a BMW dash then it’d look a lot better. And disguise the fact it’s two screens better. I’m riding the Tiger Sport 800 at the end of Jan, can’t wait - it looks like a sensible road package!

I know I’m like a broken record, but I just can’t get turned on by triumphs, especially as they claim so much to be British, yet not a single model is made in Blighty. Even if they just did the flagship one in Blighty it would make so much difference…..and “designing it” in the UK is not enough to warrant the bottom half of the emblem. Every one of them, including the sporty ones, just seem somehow dull and uninspiring to ride too. That said, I do like the look of black one of these and the speed twin and the 1200RR …..so I should get my butt on one and try them…..innit!! 👍😃👍

@@SoWereDoingWhatNowwell indeed, though I guess we could say in many ways it’s the UK’s multinational past that partly makes it great, at least not having been successfully invaded since 1066, invented the jet engine, the world being saved by Alan Turing, and the P51 only becoming great once it had a British engine……..but it’s amazing how many Brits don’t know that the “national” religion is Middle Eastern, the language a mix of French, German and Latin, the English saint a Syrian, the French defending our backs in order for the British army to escape almost intact at Dunkirk, and the polish pilots being a big part of what made the Battle of Britain a success.
