Magnets make all the difference in humbuckers. An A2 will be warm, spongy and organic. An A5 will start to get brighter, more bite and more scooped. An A5 is also a more powerful magnet so it can support more output (more winds) and without enough winds, it can start to sound thin. A nice combo is an A2 in the neck and an A5 in the bridge.

I love the unpotted uneven wind here. They do sound bright and zero muffle in the neck. So good to my ears! I want to put these in my semi hollow to hopefully grab more of the "woodiness" that is just not there with potted '57 classics.
@hkguitar19842 күн бұрын
Same here, check my comment for the differences between slug and screw coils. When I believe the unpotted pickups shin is when you turn the guitar's volume down, you really do get a sort of woody-acoustic sound (IMO). All of my Les Paul guitars have the unpotted Burstbucker pickups, a #1 in the Neck and #3 in the Bridge. On one of my sets of Burstbuckers I swapped out the AlNiCo II magnets and replaced them with the AlNiCo III (same as the Custombuckers use). The difference in magnet types isn't huge, but it is noticeable, more in the feel when you're playing. Out of all the AlNiCo magnets the AlNiCo III are the weakest strength (as far as measurable Gauss readings).

Amazing that only a *3 millimeter* difference (or about a tenth of an inch) in neck profiles separates _“yuck!”_ from _“yum!”_ 😂
@hkguitar19842 күн бұрын
100% agree with you, it doesn't take much to change the feel. Even a different profile, but the same thickness can make a perceivable difference. I had a solid Rosewood Esquire built for me, I specified a "thick" neck. As soon as I played it I fell in love with the neck, when I measured it I was shocked to measure 1.16" thickness, it's gigantic! Not sure, but I really think a super thick neck can affect the guitar's tone (in a good way). Now I have a 12 pound single pickup Telecaster (Esquire) that is my favorite guitar (favorite this week, next week might be different).

Great video Trogly ! Personally , I don’t understand the attraction to the TV yellow or the white ones for that matter . I can somewhat understand the white one but I think the yellow is just plain old butt ugly ! I suppose that’s why everyone gets to have their own opinion . In this video , the cherry model is hands down the absolute winner here ! I love it ! I didn’t even know this was available and I think Trogly has just sold a guitar for Gibson . I’ll tell them you sent me . What a gorgeous rock machine that thing is ! I’ll be contacting all points of sale for as many details as I can get starting next week , once I have my head back out of the clouds and can formulate my questions ! Did I mention that I think this thing in cherry with black trim is just plain old beautiful , and sounds great too . Definitely without the pickguard , maybe I can get it without it installed just shipped loose . That would be perfect ! Thanks again for the video Trogly and to everyone else , take care and rock on !

Great job Trogly, nice playing and perfect comparison to the 50's version 😊 I think this one is the prettier guitar, however, the yellow 50's stands out more, as something special, because of the contrast with the black bindings. The cherry just seems to hide it a bit too well, so i keep thinking it looks like an unbound Studio, of which I'm definitely not a fan.

The chatter on the neck binding kills me. I sent a different Les Paul back to Gibson and they rolled the fret board for no charge. I don’t know if it’s just bad lighting or my imagination, but I feel like it’s worse in the black that the cream binding.

I remmber seeing the Lzzy Hale Explorer (can't remember if it was the black or white one) brand new in a store, it was at least this bad, if not worse.. I'd say it's because they scrape the binding, which I would more than like if they stopped doing so the guitars would actually start looking the price you pay for them..

60s Neck P/Up (Clearer Vs) and 50s Bridge P/Up (Warmer IIs) might be the best balance (for me) … Or do they sound too same-y, that way … ?! 🤔 It’s just that the 50s Neck seems a bit muddy, and the 60s Bridge a bit too harsh (and the 60s Middle a bit too brash, too) … 🤔

Nice videos, gettin' pro-ish - but why don't you ever comment on how well the fretnibs line up with the frets? Are you sponsered by Gibson? (you never seem to mention the bad build quality of many recent Gibsons) The fretnibs vary SO much from Gibson to Gibson, but mostly, they DON'T have a smooth transition and you have a small gap, where the string can get caught while doing vibrato - I had to get a new fretjob my Les Paul when I got it (new) just vondering...
@jubei72592 күн бұрын
Some models don't have the fret nibs at all. Take the 2014 line up. None of them have fret nibs. Gibson made a big deal of the rolled fret endings but then went back on them just a year later. I like them aesthetically but yeah, they can cause a gap which catches your low E string (which can be especially prevalent on models from the 00's for some reason?)
@MikkelHNielsen2 күн бұрын
@@jubei7259 yeah, the studio models have no fret nibs too. Heard alot about the 10's models being made 'fast' specially around the bankrupcy.
@jubei72592 күн бұрын
@@MikkelHNielsen they started slowly declining after 2006 really. That's when they started chambering weight relief & generally cutting corners. After around 2010 you began seeing quite serious QC issues becoming increasingly more prevalent, which might not have been such a big deal for more budget lines but Gibson as you know, are not cheap guitars lol (& which is why all my Gibson guitars were made prior to then). They seem to have turned things around somewhat since the buyout but they still ask a hell of a lot of money for what you get in return.
@MikkelHNielsenКүн бұрын
@@jubei7259 yeah, totally agree. Mine is a 2017 classic model, nicely built except the fretnibs. But things wasn't looking good for Gibson, in every way, at that period, seems like it's gettin' a bit better again though
