Great review Austin, I've always liked Push-Tone, and while not as advanced as later instruments the Push-Tone perfectly exemplifies Gibson's quirky way of doing things. Use mineral oil for the fingerboard. The Lemon Oil is ill-advised because the lemon extract in oil can sometimes damage lacquer finishes over long a period of time/usage. C.F. Martin advises I use inexpensive Drug Store Mineral Oil for conditioning the ebony fingerboard of my JC-16KWS.

Suggestion, if you like the P94 in the neck position you really should try a Seymour Duncan Phat Staple pickup.T he Staple pickup is basically a Dynastic Pickup in construction. Imagine a large P90 sized coil with individual pole piece magnets and an output of about 10K Ohms, perfect for your Les Paul Jazz guitar.

You know, looking back at GOTW vs GOTM... it's surprising how many GOTWs I really like and want to check out, and how I could do without basically every GOTM. Like, that 3 single coil SG is somewhere in between a strat, an SG melody maker, and a 3 pickup SG custom. Despite being unique, it's familiar. I love it. And then you have GOTMs which... all are pretty much HH setup guitars with very few quirks. They feel pretty uninspired.

Dude, I was working at Strings n' Things Memphis at the Madison store, in about 2000, and we had one of these unfinished guitars with the demo pickups. I just thought that was the coolest thing ever, and It was ever so long ago, but I would have sworn it was a custom. I think the wisdom of not using lemon oil on maple fretboards comes from most maple fretboards being finished. Unfinished maple can be conditioned with oil, so I believe this fretboard should be fine to condition. Please correct me if I’m wrong though.

The magnets in the body (that hold the pickups in place) provide a magnetic field, and the wiring in the guitar will still pick up the changes in the magnetic field due to the strings vibrating. Even though the signal will be super weak, there still IS a signal, and cranking your gain will boost that signal enough to get amplified.
@melissa39202 жыл бұрын
That would explain the microphonics as well. Although the P94 is most likely unpotted.
@jonnyhafer737611 ай бұрын
kool this dude pretty much laid it out that was my guessing the ground will still be connected like he said there is a magnetic field, its like the lumitones the 1 wrap of aluminum that surrounds the magnet gets boosted way up with a transformer which your gain pedals are acting like

What I liked about Tone Pros, aside from the string changes and sustain, it also prevents the height adjustment wheel-screws from creeping down. I notice on some of my guitars without tone pros, the bridges can kind of slowly lower themselves (maybe it's the strings pushing down on it at all times) I notice the same thing with non-locking floyd rose posts.
@hkguitar19842 жыл бұрын
Correct about the bridge lowering over time. Considering the constant vibration and tension of the strings pushing it down, little by little some designs can indeed lower them selves over time.

Those bare quick connect pickup wires still do have a weak electromagnetic field, so you’re hearing that with the gain cranked. It would have been better to have a quick connect in the plastic and matching pins in the body, so pushing it into the body also connects the wiring, AND have the pickups held in with like a moving claw, so you can switch new pickups on much easier (well, you’d still need to connect the pickup wires to the quick connect… there’s ways of soldering or crimping pins onto the wires and just pushing the pins into the connector.
@Andyjpro2 жыл бұрын
Having a system where the connectors are integrated into the removable modules would have been an entire engineering procedure to itself. Doing that in a reliable way that won't wear out or break from corrosion, ham fistedness, etc. isn't straight forward; going through that trouble for a single limited edition guitar makes no sense. Even that aside though, there's no way that little pig tail of a wire is contributing to noise in an appreciable manner.

If I remember correctly, the dealer model mentioned had the pickups mounted on wooden (maple?) Blocks and that added considerable weight and it was very unbalanced. May have just been the one (2?) I saw but it was really meant for display and literally just hearing the different tones. Not for playing/gigging. One feature of a LP that is under-discussed is balance of the weight. I have played many LPs in my life. 50s-very current. One thing I have noticed is that balance (to me) seems more important than scale weight. I have played 12 lb Les Pauls that felt like 9, and 10lb ones that I would have sworn weighed 15 lbs (25/75 is an example of a heavy body that felt very unbalanced to me). The dealer version of the "swappable pickups" demo guitar felt (again only one or 2 I have held) felt very very unbalanced and "butt heavy" and my perception was that it was "too heavy". Just my $0.02

Perhaps still getting a sound when switched to a pickup that is missing indicates how much signal bleeds through even when a particular pickup is not selected. This gives some support to claims that the less switches/pickups etc. you have, the better the sound. Being able to swap pickups relatively easily is a great way to select which pickup combination works best for you.

Fun Fact Trogly. Brian May's Red Special had a quick connect system in the design when it was completed in 1964! He didn't end up utilizing it (as the pickups need to be modified to be used with it, though he never switched pickups so he could have) but all the hardware is still in the guitar. It's a good design too, check it out. The guitar is fascinating in general. I would totally recommend Brian's book on it. Careful though, it's a slippery slope to obsession, I can vouch for that ;) You should totally buy a BMG Super to review on the channel!!!

I played one of these @ guitar center, it was cheaper, but it had several more pickup options, and the pickups connected to the guitar via pins, that did not need connecting. There was no smoke covered hole, so I could not look at the circuit board. One thing I was able to do easily, was turn the neck pickup around, aka Peter Green mod. No wires needed pluggin in, as it had contact plates. Now after looking all over at the other examples, It looks like that was a modification that was made, and it was made specifically to make it easier, AND to do the out of phase, AND there are no more examples that have this feature, or none that I can find. Other luthiers made pickups for this guitar, and someone has made a similar system in a kit, but it requires cutting holes thorough your guitar.

If you look at the picture of Guitar of the Month you will see there are 12 guitars and when you read them off you left out the Silver Diablo and the Holy V. Of all of them I personally find the Holy V with a 500T pickup the easiest and most comfortable to play. A no frills bare bones rocker. At the other end of the spectrum I like the 50th Anniversary V. The Diablos both have a chunky neck and I find them difficult to play. The Long Horns have a medium neck and really are suited for jazz, however, with EMG pickups you really have to dial them back. The Explorer with the kevlar lightning bolt pick guard, many refer to it as the Gumby because of the headstock, plays very well too. I especially like the gearless tuners. The Shreds are ok if you like a wide flat fretboard. I am well acquainted with all of them as I have the whole set in mint condition. I dont play them anymore. I have another player grade Shred V I use some and am looking for a player grade Holy V, my favorite. The Push Pull is a neat gadget but I have several Les Paul's with a variety of pickups so I didn't see much point in it. I dont have the rattle or microphonic problem with the bridge pickup that one has. Maybe why it was for sale? This has a beautiful top on it and plays great. Love the way it looks. Good demo.👍

Personally, I love the quick connect system and the pcb for the controls, and I am super glad they did that. It's much neater looking in the cavity, cleaner. More work for someone who wants to mod and keep the board. Soldering those is more tedious than just the wires and pots, and takes up the excess space that you would normally have if you decided to add some extra switches, but I would just change the pots to push/pull pots rather than add switches. I recently saw on on reverb that someone put slide switches for phasing and coil splitting and wired them to the back plate. Bad idea if you ask me. Seems easy to accidentally hipshot the switches. I had to pass on that. This Las Paul is cool though. And I didn't know about the demo guitar, never seen one in a guitar shop. Would be cool to get one with all the pickups. I bet it's pricy.

I would really like to see you document the 2008 reverse Explorer GOTM. A lot of people seem to not like this guitar. But I think it looks cool with the lightning bolt pickguard and the "Gumby" headstock with Steinberger gearless tuners. It has 57 classic pups in it, which a lot of people do like. When people complain that Gibson doesn't make "modern" guitars they need to realize that actual Gibson customers, not just the haters on the internet who would never buy a Gibson anyway, hate any changes Gibson ever makes. They changed the headstock angle to reduce breakages, they didn't sell. They added the volute, people didn't like that either. Push/pulls, nah. locking tuners and better spec bridges, nobody wants those either. Neck joints with better access, nope still prefer the standard neck joints. They even make the cases overseas and people act like they're getting ripped off (although they do it anyway.). I can't imagine if a Gibson was made in Mexico or SE Asia the feedback. No body or neck binding to reduce the price, you think they were trying to sell you a turd unless it's only an entry level guitar. Etc... etc...

Can't you just plug a regular 1/4 in. instrument cable into a Neutrik and work just fine and won't lock?
@michaelmoore79752 жыл бұрын
@@shiftyfitter Yeah, I just checked with a Neutrik and wouldn't fit. I guess I was thinking of the combo XLR-1/4 connectors? And thanks for your reply.

Since the pickup swap is a modern idea, could of put a contoured heel and a belly cut on that. Is there such a thing already?

My epiphone les paul does that, i can hear the sound through neck pickup when I am at the bridge position and I turn the bridge pickup volume all the way down. I thought it being the epiphone it has a faulty toggle switch. let me know if you have noticed the same too...

It's a shame they didn't make this with the long neck tenon.

Here's the honest truth. I don't need another guitar, but I need another guitar. Those p-94s are intriguing. Maybe not to my income,but I do believe I need them in my life.

Seems like a cool piece to have around a studio setting.

I like this Guitar I think it’s pretty cool because I’m not crazy about pickup rings and pick guards in most cases especially on a guitar with a top that’s this nice. What’s the thing that is unique about this guitar is if you want to try out a lot of different pick ups quickly and efficiently is possible.

They should have put green abalone inlays in the fret board that would have set that guitar off

I have one of these guitars. Very nice. I believe there is 1000 made of these. My local store had 2 of them for sale recently. They both were from the store owners personal collection. I bought one and believe they still have the other.

Yes, up to 1000 of each of the gotm series guitars. I doubt that many were made though. Gotw was 400 - I think I misspoke on the work bench
