Counselor Troi actually provided some useful psychoanalysis here, which made her more useful than in some later season episodes.

This may very well be the Spock's Brain of TNG.

This is the first-season episode that just about everybody associated with TNG is most embarrassed about, and justifiably so. The racism is so blatant that it's amazing Gene Roddenberry and Paramount allowed it to be made, even in 1987.

1:27 Following happend in Datas Positronic Brain as a Equation: "0 = Captain is angry, why ? I will ask him for clarification." and "1 = I am third in command, I will follow the advise of the second in command. And remain in the chain of command as Starfleet layed out in the Guide of behavior for inferior Ranks." Because Data has to strive to better himself he chose (1) . Good Choice. LMAO

Now that I watch an early episode, like this one, I realize how much the series matured. These early ones (this, in particular) are almost laughable.

I have no idea where this impression stems from. The script is great, the atmosphere in the crew can be felt even years after it was broadcasted.

@@gluecksdrache2054 You are too easily impressed. This episode was always panned as a joke. Even the incidental music is parochial and sophomoric.

@ShannonFreng2 ай бұрын
@@dhinton1 'No lock to stick'? What does that portend to mean? Your other statement is irrelevant to the argument. I was considering the show in itself, not making any comparison of it to the original series. You seem as witless as the first guy who replied to me, so perhaps you two would be more fit conversationalists, for each other. KZbin is awash with you types, unfortunately.

I love the endless times that Data had to be to told to shut up. Especially in seasons 1 and 2. Very often it was a simple Data rambling and Captain Picard just saying a simple Data, to get him to shut up. I watched from the beginning yet again a few months ago, i was reminded about how mediocre season one was. There were so many things wrong with this episode they ere too numerous to mention. 😮😮😂

Is there ANY good reason why you are still uploading these clips ONLY in 480p in 2024??? Your competitor, tjwparso, at least makes sure they are in 720p and now in 1080p. So, I prefer to watch something much, much clearer.

@@MinecraftMartin A common trope in popular media from the 19th and 20th centuries was "white explorer encounters tribe of primitive black people." The alien civilization in this episode is distinctly meant to look African. They even go so far as to have them kidnap a white woman who needs to be rescued. The cast, crew, and fans at the time hated the episode and saw it as racist.
@Locutus2 ай бұрын
@@MinecraftMartinI thought this was a progressive episode at the time when I saw it in the 90s, as it showed a strong Black cast. However, I think the problem is that it depicts the Black cast as tribal and primitive savages with the story line. I believe it depicts what Europeans thought of Black people from the 19th Century in how they talked and behaved, and how they captured a beautiful white woman. I don't think this was intentional, but in their quest to write this story, it turned out bad. If it had been a White cast instead of Black, the episode probably would have still been a bad episode and one people wished hadn't been made, but it probably wouldn't have received the same backlash as this did. When you're writing something like TV, it's easy for a good idea or storyline to look really good on paper, but once you put it into action, it can often turn out bad. One of the things we have to remember that times were different back in the 80s. The people writing and producing this grew up in an era where racial stereotypes and racial inequality were the norm in the USA. Gene Roddenberry was born in the 1920s and although he was a utopiaist, he wouldn't have been immune to racial stereotypes despite how progressive he was for his day.

The characters I really wanted them to get rid of at the beginning of the first weason were, Troi, Yar, Dr. Crusher, and Wesley. I really could not stand any of them. I voyager, I had hoped they would have gotten rid of Kes at the start as well.

I can see from the outset that none of the actors are liking the script at all they're very stiff they're playing it like a third grade kids playing at being I don't know kings and queens the same thing they're not happy with the way the script is written they're not happy saying the lines that they're saying and this is showing in the acting it's very stiff there is no flow to it. Somebody named blamers in the comments has said that this episode is all kinds of problematic and it's true, the racism shows in so many ways that it is not even worth mentioning it's a stereotype of what white people have thought African tribe people were like and it's also shows in the fact that nobody who was doing this episode really wanted to be there, although one has to ask the question the African-Americans who are playing these characters they don't seem to have a problem with playing them even though they are a stereotype even though it is a racist episode and in so many ways they don't have a problem because they're actually playing the characters smoothly and without any kind of almost robotic simply reading the line sort of look to it. Why are they the African-American actors in this episode, making this episode in the first place I mean they could have said it was racist they could have had the NAACP need a protest or something but they didn't and they play the characters smoothly unlike the bridge crew of the Enterprise, so my question has always been why.
