Between 1967 and 1975, Desmond Dekker, Jamaica’s first recording superstar, graced the UK pop charts on no less than 7 occasions.
His ground-breaking hit, ‘Israelites’, was the first Jamaican-produced song to top the UK chart in April 1969.
Its popularity led to a reggae explosion that took the genre into the mainstream and opened the way for the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals to follow.
Consequently, despite his tragic death over decade ago this year, he remains one of a handful of reggae artists who are readily identified with the genre.
And now, over half a century since 'Israelites' forever changed the sound of popular music, it is celebrated once more with a brand new lyrics video.
If you don’t know the lyrics, you can now sing along with the confidence that you’re getting it right - word for word!
ISRAELITES LYRICS:
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
My wife and my kids, they packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Shirt them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites
After a storm there must be a calm
They catch me in the farm
You sound your alarm
Poor, me Israelites
I said I get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir
So that every mouth can be fed
Poor, me Israelites
I said my wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me
Darling, she said, I was yours to receive
Poor, me Israelites
Look me shirts them a-tear up, trousers a go
I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde
Poor, me Israelites
After a storm there must be a calm
They catch me in the farm
You sound your alarm
Poor, me Israelites
Poor me Israelites, poor me Israelites, poor me Israelites

Desmond Dekker lived in cricklewood lane and I remember knocking on his door, his wife or girlfriend answered and she was very nice and friendly to us children who was about 8 year old at the time . She gave us all signed photos of a smiling Desmond. He drove a mustard coloured sunbeam rapier . Fantastic days of childhood. 😊.

It’s “poor” and not for…? Okay 😂 I think the toughest line is (as I can sort of hear it) : “shuck them a tearup choses ago”…which isn’t remotely close to what the lyrics are. In fact, it makes zero sense 🤣 I was pretty good at lip syncing , though 😂! Thanks for the correct lyrics…in March of 2024 🎉 Better late than never.

@@gerardjachymiak5822 Who me? Seventeen is awfully young to be concerned about what to do. I was twenty-one and still had no clue, and was hitch-hiking through the Mid West. My cousin - she joined the USAF at seventeen and toured the world. I became a songwriter and she became a combat medic. I was playing bars while she was saving lives and getting shot at. You tell me - who made the right choice? We both did what we were drawn toward - and as different as our paths were - we both went into our chosen careers with all that we had. I ended up a third-tier songwriter, and she got shot by a Taliban sniper, became diabetic, and retired from the Air Force. Who made the right choice? We both did. Neither of us have regrets. That's all that matters. Find what you love, and kick it in the ass with all you have. Take chances. One day you, too, will be 65. Don't waste your life worrying. Life only lasts for a few moments. Carpe Diem.

That is a sweet story!! I fix church organs in st louis, and often on the east side. And many of these places have people playing that may have had some success in secular soul music in the past... and they go to the church and play when they're done touring and chasing that dream... so the churches there, though often poor, have amazing music. And the man I was working for was lamenting that he had the floor of the church repaired just a year or so before this... and I asked him why they wear so fast... and he said simply "dancing"... I want to go to that church, where they dance like that... and I'm an atheist. Lol

Our people knew we were Israelites from way back when (the children of Israel). Today, many of us don't care, lost in Babylon's deceptive system headed by its religion called Christianity that teaches us it does not matter who we are, but what does the Bible say? Rom 9-3 to 5 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Messiah for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of YAHUAH, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Messiah came, who is over all, YAHUAH blessed for ever. So be it.

I'm so glad Drugstore Cowboys introduced me to this song. Now knowing the lyrics, it fit perfectly in it. Bob played the role of the singer raiding "pharms", and his crew was his poor Israelites he had to provide for. But he has to stop, fearing he and Dianne too would end up like Bonnie and Clyde, and they ended up leaving him. Classic.
