Thank you for sharing. I honestly thought that these type of buses disappeared in the early 70s when Chicago abandoned theirs.

timosha21: The DF only has 8 trolley bus lines, not even close to the City's 15 trolley bus routes. Wikipedia is in error. Every so often the City toys with the idea of electrifying one or two more diesel lines, but nothing has come of that.The last conversions were for the #24 and #31 lines.

sfmike711 And the 24 should have been electrified a lot earlier! Those of us old enough to remember having to get off the diesel bus so it could navigate those steep hills along Castro would surely attest.

Две параллельные линии троллейбусов! Неожиданно. Никогда не задумывался, что такое может быть. Ведь троллейбус - это наследник трамваев.

ckildegaard Duboce and Church behind the Safeway. It's where the N Judah and J Church come out of the subway tunnel. The 22 Fillmore trolley bus crosses both at that stop.

Fantastic to see those modern "heavy haul" trolleys. Where are they made ?? Russia ??? Quite different from the modern ones in Europe ! But, bravo San Francisco, one of the rare cities from USA to run those type of buses , a big plus in a country whose president refuses ecology !
@martinwright970
@martinwright970 6 жыл бұрын
No the new trolleybuses are made by New Flyer Industries in the USA. There is a European element as the traction equipment is made by Kiepe Electric in Germany and they in turn subcontract the production of the traction motors to Skoda in the Czech republic.

It will be sad to see the ETIs go. I wonder how the new trolleys (XT40s) performed on hill testing, because the XT60s had poor performance on grades steeper than 10%.
@martinwright970
@martinwright970 6 жыл бұрын
I agree about the ETIs. They are fun, traditional trolleybuses, but Muni says they are heavy maintenance these days. As far as I know the XT40s will have an induction motor rated around 250kW, about the same rating as the old style DC motors on the ETIs, so plenty powerful enough to climb those steep hills well. The point about the XT60s is they were never intended for the hill routes but for the flat routes like the 14 and the 30. They have exactly the same motor which is fine for the XT60 on flat routes. Same size? For standardisation!!!

@TheBruno6995
@TheBruno6995 6 жыл бұрын
Yes ! Wires (up) bring electricity to the "motor" trough the trolley . Some new ones have also a small diesel engine in order to continue on special route in there in a problem on their regular route (accident, road works .. )

Alan Fisher FPV my city Vilnius uses same skoda 14tr trolleybuses, which are louder then most buses. But important think is that they are clean and people do use them. And the vires: i acualy like how they hang over streets

joe stewart: The City has the largest fleet of trolley coaches in North America. They spew absolutely no pollution. They can easily climb the hilly streets that diesels labor, grunt, and groan to inch their way up. Often passengers must exit the diesel bus part-way up the hill and walk to the corner to re-board and continue their journey (and more-than-likely to repeat that on the next block!). I had to do that many years ago before the #55 line (diesel) was converted to the #1 (trolley). Sadly, in the name of "progress and being modern", the #55 line replaced the Sacramento-Clay cable car in the very early '40s. It was a very bad and poor decision because cable cars defy gravity and can go up any hill. The #24 (diesel) replaced the Castro cable car around the same time. Eventually that was also electrified. All those grips should have been kept. In addition to this, the City generates its own electricity from the hydro-electric plant at the Hetch-Hechy Reservoir, which also provides San Francisco with amazingly pure water. Because the City owns and operates this power system, the electricity is used to power the trolley coaches, the surface streetcars, Muni Metro (subway), the cable car motors in the car house, City Hall, the Hall of Justice, the Opera House, the Symphony Hall, General Hospital, and many other City buildings. In other words, the City doesn't get power from PG&E. The City pays no money for the electricity used to power transportation and major City buildings. Trolley wires are not really an "ugly ... web", considering what they do. What does your city boast?

Look at all these touchy touchy people. Put batteries in these things and lose the overhead wires. The overhead wires are ugly and dangerous.

joe stewart: Lots of hills. Batteries drain. Many coaches are out all day so recharging might be sketchy. So far this is the best solution. All current trolley coaches have batteries which allow them to move around any street closures, such as a large fire, an accident, fallen tree, street repair, etc. After getting around the closure and returning to the regular route, the driver raises the poles to continue as normal.
