Maybe, to some people, a "perfect piece" of amber is one with no imperfections to it. But, for me, real amber MUST have imperfections. Lol. It's the imperfections that make a piece interesting! I love looking into clear sections of amber, quartz, etc, to see what's trapped inside. One thing's for sure: it's going to be REALLY OLD, to say the least. :)
@TrollFaceTheMan2 жыл бұрын
Same, I think imperfections in this case are part of the beauty.

That's why I get my rocks and crystals so cheap. I want them to look like what they are so I don't care about what others consider flaws. I'm here because I have a chunk of amber that is just so rough it barely looks like amber and I want to smooth and polish just one side so it actually looks like amber lol. It's a huge chunk and since it's barely recognizable I got it for $3.

Glad to hear your dog recovered well. I found your video while needing some help making a decision. I was in process of fitting a large 35mm triangular, tear drop piece of Indonesian amber with volcanic ash. It slipped out of my hands, and dropped on the slate floor, chipping off a huge 18mm x 10mm chunk on the back lower area. Very gently with constant drops of water and using a 4/0 jewellers saw blade, I slowly sliced off the broken piece off the bottom edge. Then used your method of sanding, bowl and toothpaste, and your mix of beeswax an coconut oil to give it a lovely finish. The Amber is slightly smaller by 5mm, and looks good in the sterling silver cap and chain I made. I'd love to show you the finished result, though not sure how to.

Perfect timing! Bought myself some baltic amber from Poland the other day as I wanted to have a crack at polishing it. For me, I will be trying two "compounds" The first will be a piece of ordinary slate that's kept moist and not pressed hard against. Reason for that is it brings up the edges of my knives (I try and collect them) to a mirror like finish and if it can do that to numerous grades of steel.... The other compound I will use is quite cheap to buy and thats cerium oxide. Now that brings up everything from glass to precious stones like new. Unlike you using a cloth, I will be using moist leather. Bought a bunch of offcuts from ebay real cheap a few years back and am still using the same pack. I read in one of the comments about just using water and leather for much harder material (ruby), so it should work a treat on Amber once I have finished shaping it to how I want it. Thanks for the video, was real informative and I really enjoyed it!! Edit: If you wanna keep the polished amber pistine, dont keep them together in a bag as they knock against each other, cause fractures and chips etc.

So simular experience with my dog. I know what you have been through. I only praise God for saving my puppy's life. Well want to thank you for the amber polish advice, really helped. I bought this ring almost 16 years back, but I was very upset I ruined the shine on the ring when I tried to apply some chemical polish to the ring which has an amber stone on it. I never could get the shine back until today after following your advice. I tried the cup, clothes and toothpaste rub, and I applied waxaline to it, and it is shining so well. I am so happy how the amber turned out to be, it got its color and shine back. This ring was an antique and I bought it in US. Now I am in India, but all these years I was not using this ring, but now I do. Thanks to you. And thanks to God. Hope your dog is alright now.

I learned something very interesting from this video which has nothing to do with the subject. I am an electronics engineer and in school I learned that the word electricity was derived from the Greek work for amber ēlektron. It got that name thanks in part to the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus who noted that when amber is rubbed with wool it creates what we now call static electricity. I had always wondered why would anyone be rubbing amber with wool but now I know they were polishing it.

Correct, copal reacts with alcohol and acetone. It's beautiful sometimes though when you get a bug loaded piece from Columbia! Also salt water test, and the static charge test. You can always taste it too, but that can get dicey. I've used belt sander and buffing wheel to shape and polish, but it gums up quickly! Heats up quickly. Been using bees wax and mineral oil when I drill in, but sometimes I'll hit an air pocket and then oops, it cracks in half. I'm using garbage rocks right now to train myself to wire wrap instead of drilling into the piece to epoxy in a bail. Thanks for the video. Also, sorry to hear about your fur baby!!!! I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know. The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress. I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.

Great video, hope your family and your dog are ok. What's the simpliest way to cut Amber and form it into a perfect circle? I want to make few stones I have into perfect circled beads.

Thank you, glad you liked the video. That is a tough one though. I am not sure there would be any easy way to do that. If they were sufficiently big they could be shaped on a lathe but other than hand sanding that is about all I got.

Hello omg I'm so sorry to here this. Poor cesar. I'm hoping he is all happy waggy tail now. Stunning amber. Do I always cut and polish when the amber is wet? I have just bought a huge raw amber piece so so scared I will damage it. I am new to this I'm guessing I wet for drilling my hole. Wet for shaping and wet for polishing? Hope you can help thank you so much

Can you use a Dremel to grind those low places that have pits? You can also shape it using a Dremel, then use a buffing wheel Dremel attachment w/a soft cotton wheel & use ultra fine polishing compound on the wheel to polish it to a super glossy finish. Maybe you could do a video on this method?
@TrollFaceTheMan6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't see why you couldn't, seems like it would work pretty well. As for a video on it..? Any specific reason why you would want to see me specifically do one?
@petersmedley45911 ай бұрын
Dremel or Foredom with a roll sander, especially one which is still taped and so makes a tight drum. 240 or 320 grit already on a mandrel should do fine. Alternatively, needle files, flat, barrette, half round at cut 2 then cut 4, followed by sanding to get the marks out, work8ng your way up the grits. 3M also do polishing discs that go up to 1 micron (pale green). Finish with Autosol car polish on a soft cotton mop.
