One thing i like about Gunmar is that he is not just a brute He actually has a brain He just sees few humans and already connects that the bridge is open, he used changelings to do stuff for him while he was in jail, he took so much care to not be seen by anyone, and uses draal as a tool to make Jim afraid of fighting and hurting his friend, not only that but also in wizards he somehow managed to use the Sun petrification as a weapon by ordering his mindless soldiers to roll out and be petrified but because gravity and momentum exist, they didn't stop rolling, he is actually smart and knows how to make strategies

I wouldn’t really classify Angor Rot as a “Side Villian”. He had his own motives, and had the majority of a season for his arc of going from an angry troll sorcerer… to an even *MORE* angry troll sorcerer.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that the big villains aren’t complex in their motives, having the side villains be more interesting while the main ones act as the big scary end threat is fine by be, and really I think you can call stricklander and Angor rot main villains (stricklander in beginning and middle of P1 and Angor rot in the whole 2nd section of part 1). Yes morgana was worst villain in Trollhunters but I think wizards made her a better character.

Sorry for the late response, I've been preparing for grad school and working on my Elena follow-up video :) I agree, I think it's perfectly functional to the narrative, however I think that they had room to do more with them :) By side villain I guess I mean 'not the big bad guy who you have to deal with the season/series finale/big troll in charge' bc Angor and Strickler both fill major roles to the narrative but are lesser figures in the grand scheme of things. With a different sorting system I probably could sort them as main villains for sure though. Wizards helped her a lotttt for sure :)

I'll admit that the relationship between Bular and Gunmar was a missed opportunity because we saw that there was much potential. He often speaks with a softness in his voice towards Bular he almost never uses for others, and he looks and acts genuinely heartbroken that his only child, the only genuine connection he has had in centuries was taken from him. The line "What should a father do, to the one that MURDERED his only son!" was one of the most chilling and morbidly relatable things he ever said. We hear from Chompsky that Gunmar was enraged when he heard he killed Bular, not his servant, his son, and was so wanting vengeance that not only did he vow to kill his friends and family, but he used their actual names. Wouldnt it has been more impactful if we see his shadow capture Gnome Chompsky and when he learns about Bular's death he gives off a sound and horrific bellow that shakes the entire darklands.

I think Wizards messed up angor rots backstory cause there was no opportunity for Gunmar to attack his village if as soon as Morgana became the eldritch queen Gunmar was trapped in killahead bridge.

100% I agree with that. I honestly don't like what Wizards did with Morgana in general too. It adds a lot of contradictions to the original series, like how Merlin says "She's as ancient as I am, maybe even more so", but Wizards confirms she's Arthur's sister while Merlin was an old man so he was probably alive at the time of her birth and knows her life story.

Seeing this analysis and knowing the Wizards is out, and we see total motivation behind Morgana, quite fun. I personally love the side villains over the main as well. Morgana is a great character in her own right, but after Wizards, it’s hard to see her as a main antagonist. Her Trollhunters début and her Wizards certainly paints her in two different lights: a vengeful witch who fought Merlin and gained a champion and used said champion against loved ones, and a wayward sister who only wished to be happy and see her brother happy as well as a lost soul who only wishes to rest in peace. Aside from this, I would have to say Angor Rot will always be my favorite side villain. His backstory and ties to the Pale Lady are tragic. His fight with Jim was always intriguing. He looked at Jim as prey, which was pretty freaky, but it was also very intense during the first watch through. What can I say? It’s so good that I could rewatch all over again, lol.

Don't forget Angor Rot's beautiful menacing voice. I also was REALLY upset when tney chose to kill him off the 2nd time. I REALLY would've found 3 Below, Wizards & the upcoming movie if he was around. The idea of seeing him after his first lifespan ending in tragic sarrow, his 2nd chance be about him gradually regaining purpose & care for another's life. But from the experience of what it's like to be on the dark side (that's not intended to be a Star Wars reference), it could've made him stronger for doing nis best to not let others go down the same path. All that time when Jim was controlled by (Morgana's Brother who I don't care to remember the name of), I was thinking Angor would've contributed in supporting that there’s still some Jim left in him, as HE himself has been in those shoes. I can only imagine the chemistry of if he decided to stay in the Trollhunters finale to look after Arcadia how it be awkward working with Toby & AAAAARG after what he did to both of them. And imagine how he'd be so reluctant to help ones like Strictler & Morgana after what they did to him, but finding to see their like him of just conflicted souls. (BTW I NEVER forgave Morgana for killing off my #1 favorite character)! I also can imagine him starting off still with GORGEOUS raspy voice maybe in 3 Below, then by the end of Wizards, he's begun gaining his original voice. + I am bias for wanting to see him fighting the aliens as well as the antagonists of Wizards & the upciming movie. I think him not dying the 2nd time would've done notning but either contribute more to fleshing him out as a character, or at the very least satisfy me on having my favorite character a key root for in these Trollhunters sequel/spin-offs.

Steve I think is an antagonistic character but lacks the threat level to be considered a villain, especially since he does have episodes where he mellows out and is a relatively decent human being to Jim even before creepslayerz. It is interesting thought though. I’m going to think more on this xD

You know the more that I think about it, the more gunmar reminds me of Megatron from transformers, both are warlords/tyrants, both are the strongest of there factions, and both formed an opposing movement from their own species . however megaron has the one thing gunmar doesn't, a compelling backstory, where he was a miner turned gladiator, turned politic, turned warlord. While gunmar was just born evil.

I really don't understand why Tales of Arcadia isn't more popular. IMHO, it's the best cartoon Netflix has produced so far. I would dare to say it's in the same quality tier as Avatar. Sure, it has some flaws but so did Avatar. I don't expect perfection, just greatness.

I think the pacing of the first few episodes unfortunately probably turned a lot of people away from the show; my brother and sister both actually put down the show after the gnome episode at the beginning but rewatched it later at my recommendation/my telling them it gets better. It’s a real shame because it is a downright fantastic show

I don’t care if no one else thinks this but Bular is my favorite villain and you can’t convince me otherwise! 😂 (But Angor Rot is my second favorite villain) The reasons I like Bular is mostly because of his personality. I love a character who just wants to cause chaos and break stuff because they can. I also like his motivation of just wanting to see his father again (and also wanting to cause chaos), but I can relate to that in some way. You can see the emotion Bular shows when Jim’s magic omelette (yes, I did that on purpose) doesn’t work to free Gunmar the first attempt. I also think he's just cooler than Gunmar

I love Morgana in Wizards in a way, I know due to the time of the video that Wizards probably wasn't released, but it does a really good job of fleshing out the character and making them human, I like the part where she is manipulated by the Arcane Order and used as this tool to make trolls win and to fight for the victory of the trolls and to oppose and despise Merlin at every turn, that being her goal in a way because she was manipulated into believing it and her anger at Merlin and Arthur being used by the Arcane Order to vilify everything about Merlin and his Trollhunters, that being her motivation because Merlin basically took everything from her, her left hand in the amulet and she would more likely blame it on Merlin than her own brother and thus being the reason why she did all she did.

Wizards really helped Morgana and Gunmar and gave them reasons for why they are evil. Morgana felt like everyone was against her and didn’t understand her while Gunmar felt like Arthur was expanding his borders to far and thus led to him having a greater hate of humans.

I think one of my favourite strickler moments is when he is held hostage in Jim’s house to protect protect from Angor Rot. When he’s given a sock and says he doesn’t eat that stuff cause it was when I properly realised he was trying to be as human as possible and had blocked out some of his more trollish aspects.

I will say, going off Trollhunters alone and not taking Wizards into account, I loved Morgana…up to a point. When she was just this spiritual presence that everyone talked about and possessed Claire in that one episode, she was equal parts hugely entertaining and incredibly f***ing terrifying. The power and threat she showed off before even making a physical appearance in the show was awe inspiring. So she has all this build up, all this intimidation, and then she finally appears…and she’s laden in over designed armor that covers up so much of her face you can’t see her expressions and is reduced to big evil ultra magical being who for some reason can only fight by flying and shooting laser beams. Just feels so disappointing after all the build up.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really didn't like what they did with Angor Rot's character. Not because the writing was bad per se (it was all right) but my main concern was that Angor Rot was a slave . . . Period. He traded his soul to Morgana so that he could gain magical abilities to take care of his people and keep them safe from Gunmar (or at least the aftermath of Gumar's war). Morgana in-turn stole his soul and used him as her personal assassin for decades to kill Trollhunters. Blinky states that Angor Rot has been killing Trollhunters in an effort to try and fill the void of his missing soul, but we as the audience know that that is not true and the only reason he was killing Trollhunters was because Morgana was commanding him to. It just felt really insensitive overall.

Gunmar in my fanfic actually had his mate murdered by Uther (Arthur's dad) and Bular witnessed it as a whelp. Gunmar wasn't actually a bad troll when he was young, he was just the leader of his tribe. Uther had a great hatred of trolls and all mythical animals. Gunmar had been on a barter (GummGumms bartered with other troll kinds) and while he was away Amari was murdered. Except in my story a lot of the lore was thrown out for better character development so yeah

Morgana was set up to become an ally. If they pushed the darkness in her character for a "kids show", it may be hard to accept her character. Angor Rot is an interesting character since he has a book of his own. Strickler is my personal favourite because he's a schemer and his indifference toward Jim shows how he actually cares for him but he is supposed to be atleast a century worth old and therefore a bigger picture is more important for him than his relationship with Jim, until he fell for Barbara.

Very much agreed. These side villains are some of my favorite characters ever (esp. Angor). The main villains aren't bad per se, they do their job as Big Bad fine. I just prefer the more fleshed-out side villains. I guess technically Angor and Strickler could count as a main villain in the second half of Part One, though.

My most favorite villains in tales of arcadia is Morgana and Morando, plus they'd work well together if Morgana was still alive and on the bad side I see not many like morando cuz lack of backstory, but his fights are always interesting, there's alot of emotional battle between him and vex too, he's also a manipulator and just so evil, it makes me wonder so much on who he was before betrayal, he was definetly a good person before he went into exile as sorta seen from Coranda when he upgraded the mothership It sucks not many like him but I can see vast details on who he is and was, I also noticed he works more with the women than the men, or am I just seeing that different? He's a pretty underrated villain, but when I see someone's favorite villain is morando, they can see the details too And Morgana, we'll how do we start She was an apprentice, a friend of Merlin who's hand was taken by him and she was out to kill him until she was sealed away, In trollhunters she's seen as a horrible villain (I mean evil, she was a badass one) But in wizards we see that she was not just evil to start, she thought she was doing what was right, fighting for what's right, but she did it in the wrong way. So she was misunderstood, she's a lost soul and has been through alot She then became a hero again but tragically died, It makes me wonder though, morando sees the galaxy as pure chaos but he didn't know if gaylens core was real, so his real desire at first was just the throne, king Fialkov and queen Coranda did many bad things too and that might explain why he thought he may be worthy of the throne instead of them, Maybe he was misunderstood too, he thought he was doing right, but did it in wrong ways.

@@two4328 Nope, Aaron Waltke confirmed that he wasn’t evil before his betrayal, he felt though that the king and queen weren’t doing what should have been done(example:King fialkov didn’t help vex’s family, neither did they help with voltar) and probably felt he could’ve done better, from what I’ve seen The citizens didn’t have much respect for royalty anyways until they had hope, after Aja saving izita’s child’s life, she was indebted to house Tarron, as if she wasn’t anyways, Morando was good in the past, and apparently even helped upgrade the mothership, but he was for sure blinded by greed and power

I feel like the show murdered Claire's character. In the beginning she was amazing and not afraid to speak her mind and not a simp. In Wizards she's a whiny, annoying girl with a huge love for Jim and will sacrifice the whole world for him. Steve is a more interesting and better character then her. I'm bad at explaining things but all in all she's a simp in wizards and I am not living for it.

I think for me the next weirdest thing with Claire in wizards is the fact that they actually broke everything with the ship by turning Jim human again. If claire is a wizard, we can assume she is immortal like Douxie/Merlin Jim is a troll, he is also effectively immortal by making Jim not a troll, he's gonna die in like 60 odd years so they make this big grandeous 'her true love saved him from evil trollitus' and then ...its actually a bad thing? LOL

In fairness for Claire, they are just teens and therefore might be suffering with PTSD much like Jim. I know by the trollhunters series, Claire is one to have the strongest will being Morgana's Successor and whatnot but Wizards is Douxie's show. With the power she is wielding by then, she may steal the show and invalidate Jim's and the troll hunter's suffering since they can just utilize their "Magic" to brush off most challenges so Claire is made to become weaker emotionally by that time. And I think it sort of works because in the end, they are still too young to be carrying the weight of saving Arcadia even if this is technically their 2nd time since 3 below is the Tarron's turn and the creepslayerz ft. Toby and arrrgh

I actually really like what they made of her in Wizards. I feel like her dependency in Jim was somewhat understandable, not eveyone has to move to a different state accompaning trolls, leaving your family and friends behind, being the only 'weak' one on the group, and the only one you can 100% relay and confide in is your half troll boyfriend. She has seen him put himself in danger multiple times, from saving her brother, to killing one of the strongest trolls in history, blocking a direct atack form a sorceres as strong as Merlin, getting a shard in his heart and now being hunted by medieval knights. In that situation I can definetly understand why she would be so protective and overreact too much, a level of dependency is understandable in such live or die situations. But the show is able to balance this by separating them, polishing her struggles and believes by making her able to use shadow magic on her own, something not even Douxie knows (who now is a Master Wizard btw). The show made her be more capable in knight duty than Steve. It also acts as a great way to mirror her with Morgana, something that was first shown 2 series before Wizards, giving her a bigger struggle than saving Jim, saving herself from becoming Morgana. She is still strong, her independence may have been erased a bit but she had to relay in everybody else than herself in order to survive, but that still makes her blame herself for being weak and incapable of protecting others and herself, which makes her start her journey in shadowmancy. In my opinion, I love what they did to her, how Jim took more of a back seat this series but still keep him as an amazing hero, but gave her room to grow and learn more abaout herself and become confident once more. And about Clarie being to emotional and annoying in Wizards, she has always being like that.

To be fair, the heartstone from which Gunmar was born got corrupted because of WARS, so while he was born evil because wars are considered wrong, that's never been his main trait. I always saw him more as an embodiment of rage, conquest and power hunger than pure unimaginable evil (which explains why he still has the charisma to gather armies: It's an important aspect of wars)... Though I admit his character-design, Decimaar blade possessing people and the fact he feeds on energy like a vampire really make him APPEAR like a purely demonic figure!

I like them all. ASPECIALY Bular. Idek why. He was my favorite since the Show came out. After that comes Strickler after Strickler comes Gunmar after Gunmar comes Angor Rot and...i have already talked to much. But when the show came out i was 7. And 7 Year old Kids always like the cool, strong and overall Badass Villains and not the more Complex and 3 Dimensional Charackters...at least i was like that. I also love his Voice (at least in tje German Dub i have never watched the English one). Well, even tho i love pretty much every Villain in Trollhunter he has stayed my favorite in Tales of Arcadia for all those years.

I think I have a theory that would explain how would Gummar have so many Gumm Gumms. This really bothered me because if Gummar would have a lot of Gumm Gumms, that would mean he gets any troll he comes upon. But how many would he get? I calculated that there are in fact, 200 Gumm Gumms in the show. They remind me of a colony of the same kind of species of trolls? 🤨 so my theory is that Gummar enslaved Blinky and Dictatious’s species! No wonder we don’t see many of Blinky and Dictatious’s species around Troll market. I don’t truly think it is true but it’s just something I been thinking about for awhile.

I've seen it! I love how it managed to answer just about every unanswered question I had or raised in this video :D (We will never know who stole Gunmars heartlands tho, what a tragedy) Unfortunately my editor hasn't seen it yet and since she reads the comments and because we are in spoiler timeframe still I won't say too much for now. And there are a few details I'm still mulling over myself to fully decide what I think on. Basically I will say: I liked the revelations we got about Morgana and overall i loved wizards. I do want to know how she kept that ponytail in her helmet tho

If you watched Wizards, you'll notice Gunmar and Morgana had similar goals. Morgana fights for equality for humans and other magical creatures....from his brother Arthur. Gunmar kinda fights to protect his kind from humans....King Arthur I kinda side with Morgana & Gunmar.........and the Arcane Order in TH: ROTT

It’s such an awesome show. I wouldn't excactly say that Angor Rot is a side villain, look I know he was controlled by Strickler and was basically a minion's minion, but he WAS free from Strickler's control (by that I mean getting his soul destroyed) and ended up the final battle of Part 1. And here was me thinking Bular would be the big bad of Part 1. I'm tryna say I'd prefer Angor over Bular, just saying.
