Part 2 see: • Wooden trollingmotor P...
Anyone with a cordless drill can make this trolling motor, just from wood. This is a fun project; making it, in a couple of hours, and then navigate on still waters. OK, you have to buy a propellor, a square drillhead, a strip aluminium, a trottle handle, a threated rod, screws and a plank of impregnated wood. This video speaks for itself; all is visible. The project is Open Hardware.
Now, make one for yourself and one for your best friend. Enjoy!
After changing the propellor in a 2 blade one and the cordless drill in a hi-speed one, I made a short Part 2 video:
• Wooden trollingmotor P...

Berto you're an amazing craftsman. I think that the best parts are: 1) The throlle switch with the handlebar and 2) The holes for the air circulation of the motor! Really good job!

what's the music's name? btw, great idea. But i don't think the carbon brushes (it that it's name?) will last much using it on a daily basis. It would be a lot better to use a brushless motor. But it's a great idea to have one of those in case of emergency.

14AH drill on a 1.3AH battery = about 6 minutes run time. slap 300W 12v solar panels on there and a basic 12v battery and you can go all day long.

Nice one. Well done. You may want to try a model airplane prop though. Thats what the cordless canoe challenge folks are using and getting fantastic results. I have just made one using an 18V drill, and a 12x6 model plane prop. It was powering my Mirror Dinghy at 2.2 kts. The motor didnt even get warm, so I will try a 12x8 prop for some more pitch speed and draw some more amps. Keep up the good work, and have fun!

I made an awesome trolling motor out of a 18 volt cordless drill. If you are looking for more power than you should disassemble the drill and take out all the gears and bearings from the front section of the drill, then fit the shaft, then reassemble it. The gears actually slow down the electric motors rpm's. Just a heads up, cheers!! :-)

Well done Sir I need mount like this but can't build it myself. I have tools I use for business with 10 batteries as well , 5 ah each. Ryobi brushless cordless drill 1800rpm without this mount , just drill paddle instead = 4.5 km/ph avarage speed , max speed 4.5km ph , using cordless air fan to cool engine of a drill. One 5ah battery gets me 500 metres at full speed

@laharl2k The composer, song and album you find at 2.46min. in the video. It's a beautiful album. What is the normal use of an outboard? How often and how far are you navigating on the water? My experience is not that often and far. Before the carbon brushes are gone you spend many enjoyable hours on the water.

I don't think ANYONE thinks this was to replace a multi-horsepower petrol/gas motor. The idea is to replace a small electric trolling motor - but even at that it will fail very fast. I do agree that people in general lack perspective when it comes to things like power.

Looks like the blade stalls as soon as it hits the water giving a max speed that is a fraction of what you could paddle. Hardly seems worth it for the 5 minutes battery life you might get out of a laboring battery drill.
@Bertoaus
@Bertoaus 12 жыл бұрын
The square drillhead can be used as it is; but I advice to fill it with grease. The head can easily be opened. It runs more smooth afterwards. Sorry, I did not try to go backwards.

1) get a 12V drill and then attach a car/marine battery to it. the battery life will out last the drills life, problem solved. 2) I wouldn't worry about the gearbox cause you'll melt the brushes long before you tax the gearbox. 3) You re-mount the drill to the propeller under the water, it will stay cool forever. 4) Keyless chuck will destroy itself long before saltwater can afftect it. With all these mods will be bulett proof.LMFAO!!!

you loose too much energy by the vertical transition,the energy of the drill (kinetic) gets down when entering the gears in the vertical chuck so you end up with not much power,but if you had the propeller straight onto the drill it would go much faster
@Bertoaus
@Bertoaus 8 жыл бұрын
The square drillhead behind the propeller has a one on one transmission. This chuck is filled with grease, so not much energy is lost. The propeller on a straight shaft is a problem with steering and mounting on the boat.
@Niphiz
@Niphiz 8 жыл бұрын
yes,your design is more functional and usable than a propeller mounted on a rod on a drill,but why isn't it more fast? how many volts is your drill?? I also like the mod that you made that instead of pressing the trigger you rotate the handle just like a real gas powered motor
@Bertoaus
