I think maybe a seal might have busted and your armature might have rust built up on it. I'd just clean it out good with some WD-40 and replace any seals that might be bad and bolt it back up. You may even want to replace the brushes while you have it opened up.

Hey thanks for the videos very informative and helpful. I've got a Minn Kota Endura Max 45lb thrust. When I turn the speed selector from off to 1,2,3 the prop doesn't start turning slowly until I get to 4 or 5. Sometimes the prop starts turning, sometimes it doesn't. Any idea on what I need to do to fix this problem? Thanks

+Joe On a Boat you probably just need to replace the switch and make sure there wires aren't melted. Pop the top on the motor and I bet you'll see some melted parts. Doesn't hurt to do a complete overhaul like I did while your working on it. Parts for these are surprisingly cheap. Let me know how it goes. The cardboard washer is an assembly aid. It is to hold the brushes open while reassembling the unit. Put the armature into the magnet housing. The whole thing is reassembled in one piece. The commutator pushes the cardboard washer back into the housing and the brushes will be seated correctly. They use paper so it can't bind and damage anything.

You should also find an alignment mark punch into the housing. This aligns with the skeg. Once lined up the through bolts will find their holes easily.

lol at the end. I always forget things too. I put the lower unit all back together and as i was cleaning up I saw the big white round seal I didnt install around the nose and middle housing peace. had to take it all back apart!! argggg.... I ALWAYS DO THINGS LIKE THAT AND I EVEN LOOKED AROUND BEFORE I PUT IT ALL TOGETHER BECAUSE I KNOW I FORGET THINGS ALL THE TIME AND STILL MISSED IT!!!

Sounds like you've got a leak and your motor is shorting out. Pull it apart and check the seals. They're a cheap replacement so if you're going to take it apart it's worth spending the money to just have that insurance.

the cardboard washer holds the brushes back so you can install the armature with the housing already in place. Once you put the armature in place, the cardboard washer breaks loose from the brushes and goes into the nose section

Nice video im trying to find the same video but with motorguide xi5 modele. i recently bought a second hand motorguide xi5 i wanted to give it a clean so i took off the propeller to see if it was any weeds behind it. So i cleaned it and i wanted to go further by pulling appart the lower unit where the magnet is. Everything is clean no corrosion or leak or rust. But now im struggling to put it back together impossible to put the back and front side together. I cant push it bqck together. I dont why So i was wondering if i would need a special tool or it is just because im doing something wrong? Cheers

I don’t see why it wouldn’t. You would just get more reverse speed than forward speed. Although I’m not sure the switch likes to run like that.

Not s dumb question at all. I’d be interested to see what happens when you try but I can’t say I’ve tried myself. You would just have to make sure the housing is big enough for the bigger armature and hope it works. Let me know what you find out.

+mikle Cooper ph man that's terrible. I would guess that the wires got crossed up at some point or maybe there's an issue with the nose cone. Take it off and see what the seal looks like on the cone.

I ended up not replacing the clamping pieces. Other than cutting off the metal tip and welding on a new flat washer there's no way to do it.

I have a bow mount MP55 with foot pedal with a variable speed foot roller. Purchased new with the boat and I only used it once about 3 years ago and has been in storage. The motor runs forever while out of the water with no problem. When I put it in the water it cuts off in about 15 minutes. I wait 5 or 10 minutes and it will run just fine for a few and cuts off again. I replaced all motor seals with no change in the symptoms. the higher the speed setting the quicker it will cut off. I had it on about a 50% speed and it cut off in about 25 minutes. Leaving it in the water I unplugged it from power waited about 10 minutes and it worked again for a few before cutting off again. Any ideas?

Sounds like water is getting inside somehow. If the seals were replaced properly I'd go and look at the shaft into the housing. It's shorting out somehow. Good luck!

Dudes and dudette's did a brush repair on my Minn Kota Endura C2 40lb-er, now it runs backwards!!! Read somewhere to rotate permanent magnet cylinder 180 degrees, still ran backwards. Took it apart and switched the brush leads around ie. black lead on the bottom brush and red/yellow on top brush. Still runs backwards. Read somewhere there is a tiny notch on bottom of perma mag cylinder that should line up with skeg ... and it was .... so what can I do to get it to run right? Had to replace brushes because seals had blown and water got into it. There was a bit of rust on the magnets and armature and used a brass brush attachment on my dremel, ran it at medium speed being very gentle, as gentle as possible. Also one of the motor brushes had gotten stuck in the channel it rides in and thus caused the other one to wear down more. Eventually the one that was rusted in place lost contact with armature. I put in all new seals but now that I've had to take this thing apart at least 3 times now to try to get it to run right... have I damaged the new seals to the point I'll need to replace them all over again? Argh!! It shouldn't be this difficult. I have noticed that it may be possible to run the brush plate mounting screws into the holes I'm running the long bolts into, maybe. As it is the brushes on the brush plate are not at 12 O'clock and Six O'clock but are at something more like 1 and 7. So please anyone with any better ideas please chime in ... I'm getting desperate.

+eFin Arsehole wow I am lost. I would have figured one of those things you tried would have at least gotten it to run in the correct direction. If I had to guess I would say your switch probably is burnt up but by switching the leads on the brush plate it should have turned the correct direction. I think your seals should still be good as long as you haven't been beating and prying on them with an obscene amount of force. Please let me know how you fix it if you figure it out. I'm interested to see what the issue is.

You will need to find a PDF file from Minn Kota for a step by step troubleshooting guide. You will need a VOM in order to troubleshoot your rotary selector switch. Otherwise known as a multimeter. I bought mine on eBay for about $30.00

You forgot to mention that u have to make sure to put the center housing on the right way. If it's upside down,the motor will spin in reverse. There's a small derection mark on the housing that centers up with the fin. They call that the timing mark.

Thank you...you just solved my problem...I burned up my throttle switch and replaced it...I also took the bottom end apart (I tried to test run it with a battery charger, and it didn’t run right, so I thought there might be a problem down there). When I tested it on the boat, it ran backwards...thought I must have switched some wires around. Was checking that, looking at this vid and I noticed your comment. Never occurred to me that the magnets being turned around would change direction. Now working properly...thanks again!

What magnets are you talking about? If you mean the magnet inside the housing they don’t sell those separately. Go to your manufacturers part site and find the part you need.

When you see a similar set (not quite yours) click on the "contact seller" and then give him the model number and serial number of your trolling motor. If he does not reply, he doenst have the right replacement. You will need to contact several sellers until you find the one who has the right "brushes" your motor needs.

I would say that's a pretty accurate diagnosis but double check the switch. If you have a multi-meter you can search on the internet how to check the switch for continuity. Make sure all your wiring is clean and not corroded or shorting out, and your battery has a full charge before buying a switch. Good luck. let me know how it goes.

It sounds like you need to replace your switch. Watch the videos and see how to diagnose. I’m willing to bet if you take the switch housing off you’ll see some melted wires.

If anything use a dry silicon to reassemble. I wouldn't recommending using anything else. To be honest I didn't use anything and everything went together fine.

55lb thrust trolling motor work on a 14ft fiberglass boat in is 54 in wide

I think it all just depends on what your using it for. If you have a boat with an outboard and your using a 55lb bow mount trolling motor then you should be fine. If your going to be fishing an electric only reservoir and you're using it as your main power source on the transom then you may want to use two 55lb motors or maybe even a 24V bigger motor. But then again a small motor is still better than no motor. I use to have a 34lb Transom mount trolling motor on my 14ft v-hull and it was completely too slow for the huge reservoir I was fishing. It might have taken me 45-60 minutes to get to where I wanted to be, but it was still better than paddling. I have a 45lb Minn Kota Edge bow mount trolling motor on my 1648 Tracker I'm building now in other videos and it works just fine, but some day I will upgrade to a 70 or 80lb motor. It all just depends on what budget you have and what your needs are. Hope that answers your question. Let me know if you have any more. The reason I didn’t discuss the switch in much detail is because when you’re having problems with the switch it’s best to just replace it. No matter what kind of issues you’re having with speed selection it’s not an easily repairable device. Just go ahead and buy a new one.

Shit happens looks like something I would do waiting on parts for my 55 pound thrust Minn Kota foot pedal came with a boat guy said works fine dident work so I opened it up in the commentary with black and they were still water in there from 4 years ago that’s how long it sat

I’ve had rusted units that just needed to be sanded down and resealed.

The barrings are rusted, need new brushes, also need some sort of circuit board for one. and I broke the blades on one when I was moving them. Funny how expensive they are but so easy to break.

That's a tough one. It could be that your have a bad switch or that your leads are not making good contact. It could also be that the brushes aren't making good contact with the armature.
